I purchased my RD250LC in January 1982 for Ā£999, I found an app that translates what the same bike would cost in today's money. The answer is Ā£4,515.45 at a 1982 cost of Ā£1,000. This is the same bike I have today 40 years on and I am still the original owner. Interesting compared to what these bikes seem to be selling for on the market today. I remember when Padgetts were selling them new in crates some time ago for Ā£1695!! and that was long after they had ceased full production. I don't know what a 350LC was going for in 1982 but i seem to think it was Ā£1100 plus, does anyone know. If I remember correctly my new 4L0 from Team Ham Yam was Ā£1147 in 1983, they where selling off the old stock cheap, still got the receipt somewhere. My local Yam dealer told me that was below cost, he wasn`t happy about them flogging loads then going bust. It arrived on a dark November night on a trailer. Delivery guy first parked a PV on my drive, swapped it for the Black 3 striper when I pointed out his mistake. He then handed me the keys, said docs and manual are under the seat, and scarpered, leaving 18 year old me to puzzle out how to get the seat off. 4 years of abusing that one , lots of wheelies, learn how to race and general bad behaviour. Gearbox bearing failed and pushed out the oil seal, liberally lubing the back tyre leading to a few scary slides before I realised. Left it outside the front door on my parents drive with a big drip pan under it overnight , thinking no one would take it as it was clearly poorly. It was gone in the morning Doug, My 350 was also supplied new by Hamilton Yamaha, November 1981 price - Ā£1083, fast forward 22 years to 2003 and my eBay bid for it ended atā¦ Ā£1083 !!

Alan, I agree with Alex and Shaun, Iād restore this yourself, and take a view once itās done, itās the ideal base , matching Noās, low owners, standard bore etc. The paintwork isnāt a problem to you, so other than the usual consumables itād be a fairly low cost to rebuild (excluding your time of course!).
Itād be a great shame to see it broken for parts imo, now matter how many curly wurlyās youāre offered!!.

An old boy told me to bung the exhausts as depending on crank position the ports will be open allowing air/condensation into the cases?, he also recommended āfoggingā oil down the bores.

I just wanted to echo the comments from Veg and Dusty, many thanks Al, for finding ingenious solutions to problems we all face riding/restoring these old machines, in my case the seat tangs and clock housing you reproduced have helped immensely.
Cheers Al, youāre a top bloke!

YZF750R

Great story, the YZF750 was a really underrated bike in its day, I bought mine new in 1995 and still have it, I also bought the later āc**ktailā version with the Ohlins suspension that I could use as a daily commuter. I still think theyāre yet to have their dayā¦ā¦.

Wow, I hadnāt heard that Steve?, thanks for enlightening me, everydayās a school day as they say!. Iāve zoned out of a lot of EV updates as logistics dictate itāll never work for me. I do wonder how people in apartment blocks or terraced streets will fare regarding recharging though?, itād be a massive infrastructure rejig to install kerbside charging points for all.

If electric cars are the way forward, when everyone gets home from work between 5-6 and plugs their car in to charge, the grid will implode surely?, electric cars are heavier, increasing emission from consumables like tyres and brake friction materials. As stated in earlier posts, hydrogen is the only viable alternative, but is very costly to produce, and for the vehicle manufacturers difficult to store and package. Itās so volatile it has to be containable in the event of an accident (front end head-on for instance), and the fuel tank itself would have to be rupture proof, as it effectively becomes a bomb in the event of an accident.

Thanks for your response Dave, really interesting that, properly set up, the originals outperform the later replacements, (from a usability perspective).

just had a bike in with the mod done incorrectly, they drilled right through into the needle valve seat and wondered why it was pissing petrol out everywhere ! Also had others that have used grubs screws to block the old inlet off, but used screws that where too long and blocked the air hole off, and the same with using too much glue/filler etc, its amazing what I get to deal with at times !....some people need to step away from the spanners Out of interest Dave, given your considerable experience of 00 and 01 type carbs, would you say modded 00 carbs can be made to perform as well as the 01ās, or would it always be a compromise?

We scoured the classifieds in the bike press and exchange and mart, that was our 'internet', how did we survive?! š
Exchange and mart, thats a blast from the past. There was Queens Park motors in Pendlebury and City Road bikes, Hulme (manchester) all had a limited supply of second hanf bits. Its a lot easier to locate parts now, but maybe not as cheap.
And Warwickās Motorcycles at Heywood, specialised in two strokes IIRC š
