Anyone ever had a go at this? How did you get on? Did it work? 3mm seems like a hole big enough to suck flies in.

Yes, I modified a set of 4L0-00's once, and they ran fine. Didn't put on a dyno but seemed ok on the road.
Be aware this mod was only for the early carbs 4L0-00 not the later 4L0-01's.

Know among the lads back in the day as the Araldite bodge 😁 One of the lads had the first 350LC I'd ever seen. I just remember it coughing and farting and chucking out loads of smoke.
I do still remember that day though so shows what an impression it had on me. I was riding an RD200 at the time.

It's surprising to me how many of them there are as they were only fitted to the 350 for the first few months of its production or so I thought.

Looks like I have a pair of 4L0-00s. Time to get the araldite and the drill out. You keep drilling until it comes out the other side, right?

I posted a thread and pics on here showing how it's done if you do a search.

Just curious….. I wonder what the issue was with the original reed valves?,

just had a bike in with the mod done incorrectly, they drilled right through into the needle valve seat and wondered why it was pissing petrol out everywhere ! Also had others that have used grubs screws to block the old inlet off, but used screws that where too long and blocked the air hole off, and the same with using too much glue/filler etc, its amazing what I get to deal with at times !....some people need to step away from the spanners

My 4L0-00 carbs have had the mod done, but with neat ally blanking plugs in the carb mouth and at the beginning of the drill site, looks to me like they then vent internally and work the same as the later carbs.
It certainly carburates nicely through the rev range at any throttle position.

the modded carbs I think work better than the later carbs, they fuel nicer throughout the rev range due to the different needle jet and needle combination used, the dyno suggest they are better from an A/F perspective, power wise, never tried both sets on the same bike so can't say if one performs better than the other from a BHP point of view

Thanks for your response Dave, really interesting that, properly set up, the originals outperform the later replacements, (from a usability perspective).
