This will be a slow burn built to a budget. I have wanted for many years to build a twin shock Lc flat tracker like the tz powered flat trackers Yamaha raced in the 70’s in champion frames. I have kept my eyes open and bought a few items and lost some. I know I bought a set of wire wheeled hubs on here about 5 years ago but having moved garage several times I’m buggered if I can find them. So I have recently bought an air cooled RD250 frame 1A2 for a good price and I have collected today a 1A2 bottom end. I will be going along the lines of Lc barrels so obviously will need to fit a radiator and use an Lc side case with oil pump and water pump. It will be twin shocked with wire wheels and a day time mot as I won’t be fitting lights etc The motor will be pretty std as I’m not tuning it nor am I fitting tz barrels. Having fitted tz barrels to my Lc I can’t justify the ridiculous costs (£2k plus) I want this as simple as possible so minimal electrics, dry cell battery etc So for now I’m gathering bits and we will see how we get on. As normal I’m pretty time poor being self employed but I will do my best to get it finished in the time it takes Steve and dusty to build 2 bikes but Matt will probably have built 3.

May be worth getting an Ignitech to run the engine side of things. Not much wiring for an AC engine :-)

This sounds nice Veg I had a similar thought with my current LC project to be a slow burner but I am an impatient bug*er and have foolishly bolted off the mark. With the help of lockdown though I have ground to a bit of a standstill but I will watch your own progress and use you as a pace setter once we get going again Keep safe John

Looking forward to this build Veg. Especially interested in the Lc top end conversion. Have you planned what bodywork/tank you are going to fit ? Dusty

Thanks chaps, it won’t be a fast build I’m pretty sure of that, I will follow advice re Lc top end, which appears to be Lc side case with Lc oil and water pump etc, bodywork is going to be a champion fuel tank and champion seat unit.

Already on it Steve on eBay as we speak. Had some great advice from an elder Lc owner who still thinks like a child (thanks Nigel).

So got a front wheel tdr250, hoping to have lined up some new alloy rims and just waiting on front forks tzr250 2ma with yokes and disc. So next thing is decision on swing arm and then wheels off for building. Going to have to get a comprehensive list together of bits needed and also make a decision re barrels, do I go cheaper 4L1 or push the boat out and go for 350 barrels?

Push the boat out and go 350 😁
What rear hub you using? Drum or real old school disc?

Really do need to post some pics, managed to get an ac rear wheel with disc hub, big shout out to ReedPete for that he is a top man, picked up a box section swing arm which is exactly what i wanted and oeb has come good with rims etc. In the process of gathering more bits so not too much to report otherwise. Will be sending of the hubs soon enough for new and spangly rebuilds. This is taking a significant move forward and i will be following Mr Millers rebuild thread and doing the motor myself, i know im barely literate in the spanner wielding fields but i have built motors years ago just not recently so nowt ventured nowt gained.

Hi dusty it’s a 1A2 250 dx I believe looking at the engine number and not a million miles away from the chassis number. Thanks mark no pressure then from the alan millyard of the forum 😁

The aircooled crankcases don't have a support for the waterpump shaft like the lc cases have, but it has been done before I'm just wondering how. Great project, I will be following this

Its all new to me and if it can't be done (by me) i will go with an electric pump, no big concerns i want this to be utilitarian and not just a show pony (obvs it has to look cool as feck as well . )

I'd go for a modern digital ignition too - Mutts, Norbo and others sell them. Get rid of those archaic points !! Someone was selling a engine on Facebook earlier - 4l0 bottom end with a Tz350 top end, 34mm carbs etc. 2k. I will see if I can find the link Dusty

So I’ve sent the wheels off to cwc who quoted a 2 to4 week turn around that’s now going to take 8 weeks. Got my forks n disc from jon, yokes from dejan wanted tdr for the bar mounts they’ve got to go to Andy for stem transfer, got my dresda box swing arm and an Lc 250 top end from Mike and a radiator from Martin so it’s gathering momentum and will be time for some pics soon enough.
