Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I am looking to convert a German Speedo and this is the only reference I’ve found. Does anyone know where I can buy the two shafts mentioned to convert the Speedo to mph Also what’s the best way to change the face? Sticker etc Thanks Steve Steve, This is a service I offer if you don't want to do yourself. Just PM me for details. I also have a set of parts (2 x gears, SH 120mph facia, and SH needle) that I can sell you if you want to do yourself. You can buy new solid facias from Simon Wells (Katherine Wells on eBay) if you want a new one, but you need to transfer the needle stop from your km facia to the mph one. I do not like using the thin overlays, you need to remove all the old markings from your old facia to prevent ghosting, and its almost impossible to get them to fit without some bubbles or crease. the rigids are a little bit more expensive but a better option in my opinion. Shaun.

Take a picture of the person collecting, that will spook them if not genuine.

Agreed it's one for the love of the resto not for financial reasons. You probably spend £6000-£7000 on it plus 250-300 man hours which if it stays as a 250 will be worth maybe £7000-£7500 when done to top standard.

Enjoyed that read thanks Dusty. I'd love to ride one, but wouldn't pay the £33k for it. I wonder if they will hold value?

A new 350LC was around £1100 in 1981 I believe.

About half the cost of the full bike when new.

I’m looking at a project bike tomorrow and wondered if there was an easy way to check. It depends how stripped down it is, or if its a rolling chasis etc. You are probably relying on a visual check as to whether it looks right. The classic is the bent front end, and you can normally tell by the gap between the front wheel muddy and the radiator. Take some pics with you of a straight frame in similar condition if you can as a visual reference. If you assume worst case that it is bent and factor in the cost of getting in straightened, assuming its not a basket case, then you will cover yourself. Don't forget to check it has all the right lugs etc as sourcing and fitting those can soon add up too.

Not sure where you are based, but Warringtons in Malton North Yorks can check alignment and straighten for you. They've done an LC frame for me in the past.

My 1977 rd200 had an electric start, but I felt it was an upgrade when I sold it and bought a 350LC. It was never a consideration back in 1981 for me.

Yes, send it to me, I can check it out, and have replacements at worst case scenario.

Welcome to the forum. The advice above all sounds good. I'd also be checking why the plug cap doesn't fit. Maybe worth a new set of plugs and caps. Remember that either the plug or the cap has to be resistor type, not both. Again a search on here would give you plenty help on this.

I've bought projects at £1500, then spent £6,500 on it and sold for £8,000, and also bought them at £5,000, spent a further £5,000 and sold for £10,000, and this doesn't include my time, just the parts and any services I pay for (painting, rebores etc).
But, the sell price for completed bikes has dropped significantly over the last year or so, yet the cost of a project and the parts/services, if anything have gone up, making it even harder to restore and then recover your costs, so its even more about doing it for the love than before.
This is the first year in about 10 that I haven't taken on a bike resto project (due to house build absorbing my time and money), but this could be a financial blessing, although i do love the challenge f taking a scrap bike through to being a minter.
It seems to be the case in the classic car scene as well, you are financially better off buying a completed resto that someone who knows what he's doing has completed that doing one yourself. Its a bit mad, but that's how it seems to be at the mo.

Modern ignition system probably, the 31k cdi's have a bit of a reputation for failure.

There is a kit you can buy for MX exhausts, it essentially blocks both ends, 1 end has a tyre valve, you heat the dent and pump in air, the dents pop out. Don,t know if it works on LC exhausts as they have a mesh inside the tuned length for noise reduction, may make dent harder to remove due to the thickness. Last time I looked they were around £50 Mark. Just a thought. If you have a link, that would be great. I've used high temp JB weld on small dents, also filled some with MIG without issue. Not tried this stuff, looks interesting for the lower temp areas. silverhook.co.uk/Big-boy-powder-coatable-metal-filler-250ml-high-temperaturePOA Sounds like it's the price of a house!

I've never used car filler but have used the JB Weld stuff, which is reasonable although not brilliant as difficult to get smooth. Don't use any fillers if you intend getting the exhausts powder coated as the oven bake will bubble it. Use BBQ rattle cans as mentioned above

I usually weld some 2-3mm thick spacers (coin shaped) onto the top of the stand.

It took me ages to fettle the bracket, nose cone and headlight to get it all aligned. Was a nightmare but got it in the end. Good luck with it.
