I sold an item on eBay early on the 12th, buyer paid at the time via PayPal £165. It's collect in person.
I sent a message to the buyer with collection address, no response that day but a message on eBay the next day to say they will text me later. A text arrived suggesting a relative will pick up the item, they live nearby by. Still today, nothing. I said there was no rush, there isn't but I can't say I am keen on a relative collecting rather than the buyer who will not see the item themselves. I appreciate a code is needed from the relative but it all seems a bit strange now. Any red flags here, any suggestions.

My understanding is that it is better to document the collection via Ebay email and not a text. Meaning that the buyer tells you exactly who the named person is picking the stuff up, they will have some form of ID e.g. driver licence etc. That way if is is a scam then you can go back to ebay saying that you complied with the buyer instruction and the email acts as proof of action. I'd also take a photo of the person collecting!
I am wary of text/SMS of the ebay platform as although they may be genuine they give ebay the excuse to say that you didn't comply with their guide or some legal blurb.
Good luck with the collection.

Thank you ,I think similar to what you have said has been running through my mind. Something doesn't feel right and the non use of eBay for messaging isn't helping. Hopefully it will be fine but I have my concerns on this one.

Take a picture of the person collecting, that will spook them if not genuine.

Take a picture of the person collecting, that will spook them if not genuine. I normally try and discretely get a reg or something but doing it in the open will definitely give them something to think about. I could ask the to pose with it in the extreme 😂 But yes, a photo sounds a good idea. 👍 They have to provide a collection code which can only be initiated by the buyer on their account, do you think that adds anything, in theory, the buyer must have authorised the collection, they do have several hundred pieces of buyer feedback. I've just messaged them to say the 3rd party has not contacted me and also to liaise via eBay now as eBay prefer it. I don't want to appear as though I don't trust them, it could be perfectly innocent but I am wary. Appreciate your help. 👍

Wouldn't worry about them thinking you don't trust them
You don't, and why bloody should you, people can be ar5eholes
You are just quite rightly protecting yourself and to some extent them
Only message through ebay

Hence, still no response to my eBay message over an hour ago although that's not exactly a long time. But you are right, it's protecting them as much as myself. I'll keep it updated. Appreciate everyone's help, I don't use forums much but of the couple I do, this one is where I thought to ask ☺️

Don't worry about the he/she thing
Lots of people use their partners ebay or PayPal account
Could be worse, I'm in an dispute with ebay just now
Bought a DVD for my sons Christmas, marked as despatched
Then one morning I'm sitting at breakfast and get a notification from ebay saying its been delivered
Eh, no it's not. Royal Mail tracking says its delivered but me sitting on the couch looking out the lounge window saw no van, no card and certainly no DVD
Messaged seller, no reply, opened case, still no reply
Problem is that it shows delivered but when you check the tracking on Royal Mail's site it says delivered but in a postcode area I don't live in and a delivery office 30 miles away
To make it worse I bought another last week that said it would get here in time, seller sits on it for 2 days, marks as despatched Then refunds straight away with no message
Asks why and the fud says its broke 🤬

I get everything off ebay delivered to Argos. I've had items "delivered" elsewhere, it does not happen with the deliver to Argos system.

I almost guessed it and gone to the next road with the same number, I often take wrongly delivered mail there. I contacted Amazon they said to wait 24 hours as per the conditions. Monday morning somebody brought it round opened an error. Since we seem to have a reciprocal agreement with that house, I think it was them but I didn't see who brought it. Still no reply on eBay. At this point, I would rather just cancel the sale and get rid of them.

It's what I have always had. Once someone paid electronically, he didn't understand the method, neither did I, he gave me £330 in the hand on collection. He just said if he had paid already we will sort it out. He was a good bloke, drove 60 miles on boxing day for a day out. I waited for eBay to funds to arrive, I think it was just at the time they altered things, then sent him a bank transfer. My understanding is there must be an electronic option. I suppose there is less chance of someone claiming the money back with cash but with the release code, they cannot say they didn't get it. I believe if they don't collect in a reasonable time, you can do as you like with the item, they've had their chance. That doesn't help if Mr angry turns up later on though.
Above I mentioned they used Paypal but I don't suppose it has to be, could be some other method fwiw.

Update on my DVD that was marked as despatched
Only posting this as it could affect this technically
Ebay refunded me as despite there being tracking info there was no signature
No signed for service on ebay, no proof of delivery

Transpires it was not the eBay account holder, someone else using it with or without permission I do not know. However, they refused to use eBay messages, only texts. With other issues and no log of anything, there's nothing for eBay to use either way but a non collection, no replies so refunded. I've had enough of eBay, it's not their fault as such but it's more hassle than it's worth.
