Hi Paul
Have a look at the photos of your engine before you started. The lower intake manifolds have the oil inlets facing down. You have the oil inlets the wrong way around, they did it wrong in the workshop manual as well.

Nice work You might want to turn the lower intake manifolds around the right way before you put the engine in. Steve

It`s a common thing on a 500,Yamaha used to change the balance shaft drive from the front crank to the rear if a customer complained back in the day. Yamaha said that all 1985 model bikes had the drive from the rear crank but this was not true. The only bikes to leave the factory set up this way were a very small batch of RZ500S bikes built as a 1986 model which only went to Canada. Most people who carry out the mod report no difference.Having the carbs balanced can make a big difference.(see link) www.rzrd500.com/500phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=7751

Bottom yoke was polished and the top yoke was more a satin polish finish if your looking for the original look. The chain protector was hard to find 15 years ago but good luck,a guy on the rz/rd500 owners group made some about four years ago so it might be worth asking on that site.

I am in Cambridge, happy to give advice but your doing a great job on your own It might be worth watching the Yamaha service videos on youtube before you start and checking out the rz/rd500 owners group for great info (see links) www.rzrd500.com/500phpBB3/index.phpwww.rzrd500.com/500phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=8811Things to lookout for are, The workshop manual shows the lower two stroke injectors facing the wrong way, a lot of people copy this but both sets of injectors must face downward When you fit the water pump leave the outer cover off and rotate the impeller until it meshes with the gear,a lot of people bolt it up and loose a tooth off the nla gear. The reed valve cages are marked and the mark must face up. Make sure you get the crank seals the right way around, the protrusions must face the bearings, worth replacing the bush the seals fit in as well. Take care when fitting the clutch basket, its very easy to damage the small plastic gear trying to mesh all the gears up and double check the balance shaft timing. The workshop manual has the carb float height wrong,it should be 24mm. If you use a yambits carb repair kit for the 47x it has 195 main jets which is wrong, they should be 165 jets.

Nice paintwork
Are you taking the top case and barrel studs out to replate?
As these engines are so heavy are you going to build the engine up in the frame or fit it when complete?

There is only a part number for the complete two stroke oil pump which is no longer available (like most 500 parts)
Have a look at this,it may help you.

They just act as a vent, here is a photo of my nos carbs.
The 47x spec bikes had short carb overflow pipes that used to fill the belly pan and melt them, the 1ge bikes came from the factory like this.
If you want the original pink hose use his.
