This is a genuine Yamaha rear carrier for a 31K LC2 or YPVS. It attaches to the same points as the grab rail. There's a Yamaha sticker in German, that says "wünscht gute Farht"which apparently means 'wishes good ride'. It also gives a maximum speed of 130Km/H which I presume is when loaded and a max load weight of 5KG. I've never seen one before, has anyone else..? It'll be up for sale eventually...

I have seen racks for the LC 31K & f2 before . not sure if the sticker means its a gen yam after market part though . but I have seen racks for them before .

What makes me think it's a Yam part is that it looks to have been added to a standardish Yam 31K grab rail. The diameter of metal, type of fixings, end plugs etc all look like gen Yam, it's just had the rack added..
It's just the first I'd seen and thought it interesting..

The big question is what is its real value?
If it was on eBay, what would your maximum bid be?

2 weeks too late for me.. I've just got back from a UK/Spain/French trip on my 31K hybrid, and was fortunate to find a NOS Renntec rack on eBay before I left. It cost me £65 plus post I think. It's matt black and very well made but came with a 2kg limit - just (!) enough to carry the tent. They rely on just one bolt either side to bolt to the subframe so 5kg's is an improvement but possibly a tad optimistic. Yours looks way more 'period authentic' for a standard bike but the rust would mean a rechrome for me and then we'd lose the Yam sticker (unless copied..) .

Yep, the rust is a problem on some bits, there's also a rather nasty graze on the righthand grab rail.. Looks like the bike it was on had been down the road at some point.. It would be a shame to lose the period Yam decal.. I'm really quite anti eBay at the moment so I'll probably stick it on the classified forum here for a low price..

They definitely exist, particularly on the European and Japanese models
I've seen a few pictures of them on the bay in Germany and on yahoo japan
I'd be pretty sure they're a genuine yamaha accessory

Aha... Same decal... Excellent... a carrier would look even uglier on a 500..!! My sticker is straighter than yours...
