Hi Robin, Just found your thread as I'm interested in fitting a thermostat to my 350lc 4l0 build. Beautiful fit, looks like it was always meant to be like that!!☺ Could you confirm what thermostat you used - from a YPVS? Many thanks. Rich You can use a YPVs one minus the rubber seal, but mine came from a root around in a "outboard motor" box of bits, the part number is relevant to a snowmobile, outboard motor and a quad bike if I remember correctly. If you fit 2 off thermostat paper gaskets, a non rubber gasket thermostat will also fit without having any machining done at all, but do a dry fit 1st. Robin Thanks for the reply Robin. Rich

I dont really like the system used, as it restricts the flow too much, if the thermostaat is closed the water flow is almost stopped and what does bypass the thermostaat goes straight into the radiator instead of back to the pump. The water should come out of the engine and go to a thermostat which should send it directly to the pump if its cold or to the radiator if its too hot or a mixture of both. That way you always have good flow over your engine resulting in less thermal stress and isolated hot spots. This is a fair point about the heat building up behind the thermostat. Does the bypass hole help to avoid this until the thermostat starts to open? I've had a look at a few bike and car cooling system diagrams and some have a proper bypass pipe (mostly cars, because of space I guess!?) which keeps the water circulating when the valve is fully closed. I don't know the flow dynamics of the LC engine and whether the water literally stops or continues to circulate within the barrels? Has anyone ever done a proper test (DYNO or something similar) to see if the engine performs more consistently and is temperature stable? Final thought - the very first 4l0LC's were modified the very next year because of problems etc. and the YPVS models had thermostats, maybe Yamaha didn't realise the true effect of the thermostat until after the first models were launched - even the Japanese can get it wrong. Far too many questions for my liking but it would be good to find a definitive answer Rich

Rich I fitted a thermostat to my 250LC a couple of years ago, there was a picture of a Jap Fische or service sheet on Alex's old site, lost forever now, and it did show a thermostat for the Jap market, but when I was looking at machining the cover to take the stat, there was a possibility to fit a thermostat, "minus the rubber seal", with out having to machine the housing! - The flange on my stat was only a fraction of a mm thicker than the gasket between head and thermostat cover, and the diameter of the flange would have sat inside the gasket hole...so the stat would have been clamped in place nicely, but I did not want to take the option of manufacturing a slightly thicker gasket - or have it fail, and so I opted for machining the housing instead, still minus the rubber seal, as my stat did not come with one, small bypass hole was already drilled in to the stat when I got it, and it has given no problems, now it has a controlled warm up - to me a stat makes perfect sense do cars have them fitted, or not fitted depending on geographic location.? Nice language skills chaps.... the frog's legs down here are delicious! I need some advice guys and gals (I am assuming there are some like-minded ladies ! ?). I am checking the engine components before placing a bank breaking parts order. The clutch basket has some indents on the lugs, they are not deep, but will they cause problems? What is the cause? Been busy at work, but have taken some of the main bits off the body. Discovered a rather nice rewire on an unknown fusebox! Bike looks a little grim with everything black. Stripped some of the engine too but need an impact driver to continue. The pump is in Arrow's hands having some beauty treatment! Still enjoying the forum and all the pics. Rich

Hello Rich, It was probably just lazyness on my part, as restoring wheels back to their former glory, is a lot of work and time, and im not keen on polishing, as it doeant make it go any better. I prefered to focus my attention to other areas of the restorarion.....same story with the fork lowers. The forks and wheels are both powder coated, done at the same time as the frame etc. I also think that at certain angles and in certain light, a solid black wheel helps to detach your attention from the fact that LC wheels/tyres are very skinny compared to modern stuff. Just joined the forum recently and learnt heaps already!! Nice machine and particularly like the black wheels. My LC 4L0 arrived with matt black wheels, and matt black side casings, and matt black frame (in places!). I think the previous owner had a large can of it. Can I ask what made you go for the all black look instead of the alloy, black mix - just interested ;-)

Welcome to the forum. The mixing up of 250 and 350 oil pumps and drives is not uncommon on this model, but it can be sorted. Hi Arrow, thanks for your post. I believe you are the pump wizard!? Hi, Great forum - I have been looking at some of the other projects with a little envy! I live in France and I have just purchased an RD350LC 4L0 after a few months searching. She isn't in bad nick for 36 years old but needs some big love!! I would like to restore her to original condition but with some extra shiney bits, depending on budget. I have just started to strip the motor and found that the oil pump worm drive and gear inside the pump are pretty much shredded, not sure why yet? This would account for the seizure that occurred to the previous owner! It will be a longer term project but I will put photos on as things advance. Look forward to talking soon..... Just after I parted with my dosh. Discovery of chewed oil pump gear I've had a look at the pistons and one is badly scored, shame as the previous owner had just rebored! [/a]
