Freelander, I did a lot of offroading, just forest tracks etc, for work and it needed everything underneath replaced. The garage fitted a new rear diff casing seal instead of rebuilding the diff properly.. exploded 25 miles later.. back on a truck.. Defender, transfer box broke while driving through a town at about 20 mph... back on a truck.. Discovery 2, one whole engine, one short engine, one replacement cylinder head, one gearbox two turbo's and probably more... back on a truck..
none of the above came out of my pocket, i'm glad to say..
Opel Manta, the injectors used to clog up so i had to whip them out and clean at roadside as i also had to with a Mazda 626 which blocked it's carb with silt from the tank on a regular basis...
Mk2 Transit, only motor i have had that required ear defenders cos it was so rattly..the good thing was that it was petrol so every time the engine destroyed itsself, i just bought another cortina and swapped the engine...

come clean, Alex.. did you save it..? marti Amazingly yes. Somehow got my feet on the floor and the bike crashed forward, then I smacked certain parts of myself on the tank. It must have looked ridiculous. It was painful. Funny thing, back then a new rear lens was more expensive than it is now... Alex nice... reminded me of having a shot on my mates motocrosser, never been the same since... marti

had similar recently, the hole was solidly blocked and i couldn't poke through the hole, soaked the MC in vinegar, whether that helped or not, who knows but was then able to get a thin welding nozzle tip cleaner into the hole to clear out the blockage..

Hi Firstly I'd say check it is actually the head gasket I did have a leak on one last year so replaced it with a gen Yam one Left it overnight and then found a small puddle under the bike and was livid On closer inspection it was the top water hose housing gasket that was leaking and running down the front of the head Sorted that but 2 days later found a drip on the floor. Was the barrel drain bolt this time 🤣 Steve the exact same thing happened to me last year... pipe between the water pump and head, one bolt went through the bolt hole in the gasket between the head and the spigot? but the gasket wasn't straight and the other bolt went past the gasket, cue the puddle and the tantrum.. took the head off wasting a perfectly good (athena) gasket to find the wee gasket was misalined... there's probably a moral to this story, but... marti

agreed, i asked for some parts to be posted to me on the 30th of Dec at 12:14, as it's new year and the bank holiday weekend, i didn't expect a package to arrive on the 2nd before lunch... postage was the usual tenner but had a look at the post office label which said £12.xx, now i gotta buy more stuff and slip in a couple of quid to ease my conscience.. It'll probably slip my mind in the next 6 months or so.. apologies in advance Norbo.. top guy.

it's a bit frosty in Inverness but no snow nearby, as far as i know.. not gone out yet as it's -5C. The North of England got some and Glasgow airport was closed yesterday but sun was shining here.

when Steve said "chime" he was meaning "start to run or fire up" if the choke is pulled out and the bike fires up on that cylinder then there may be a blocked pilot jet and there will be no fuel reaching that cylinder when in the normal position but having pulled the choke then there is more fuel available so the non-firing side should fire up..
pilot jet holes are very small and it wouldn't take much to block them, there is lots of info to be found using search button at the top of the page, have a look for items such as "blocked pilot jet, cleaning carbs et c" and when you get more familiar with the bike and comfortable with dismantling the carbs then there are the threads on how to remove brass balls and clean out the air passage behind them..
hope that helps a bit..

I'd wind some tape around both exhaust studs on each barrel to prevent them snagging round the frame tube or a cable tie on the studs and towels on the frame.. next time..

nice idea that.. if you didn't have a handy exhaust clamp, slipping the yoke back on would do similar.. i'll give that a shot next time..

Fiddly but I like your thinking. it's not really any harder than the "normal " way but it does save the cost of a head gasket... marti

you can change the crank seals without stripping the top end, take engine out of the frame and remove the clutch and ignition then flip it over and remove the lower casing, pull the crank up to replace the seals (the pistons wont let the crank pass the upper casing) and reassemble..

Inverness. Loved it. We rented a house on a hill (more like a small mountain, deffo need a 4x4 in winter) overlooking the Loch. Fantastic roads, would loved to have had a rental bike and not a Vauxhall Omega. Great people, great food. Only beer on tap was Carlsberg and as one barman told me 'well...it's cheap'. Went in August and no midges. As I've mentioned before avoid the Charles dickens restaurant. No lighting. I kid you not. You get a candle on the table to read the menu and you can't. We decided to vacate before ordering... Alex ps Marcos next time you come up, i'll point you towards a local bike hire place marti

His dad has a house north of Inverness he was going to head up that way in the next few days? Oh and Inverness you lucky git, keep trying to persuade the wife to move that way, I love it her (Scot’s parents) no feckin way. Done a few days work in Elgin love it. She wants heat and sunlight I want no feckin neighbours, drizzle and midges 😁 the weather in Inverness is better than most people from the south commonly think.. and the Moray coast in summer is well worth a visit although i'd avoid the peak tourist times to run round the NC500, which i'v done (missed out the Applecross part) in a day.. as there are too many campervans and supercars... even in january, although not this year, we have blue cloudless sky which means you have to break out the sunglasses and thermals... marti
