Iv decided I'm going to open up the crank cases and see what's what, first job is to sort out my garage so I have space to lay everything out, I'm going to completely clear my very cluttered bench and also set up a tempery bench created from a very sturdy wall paper pasting table with a nice new piece of ply wood on top. Hopefully be ready to start on the engine in a week or so. When I start to share the experience would it be best to start a new thread or keep this one going?

Hey Chris Why not start a new thread for your engine build. Keeps it relevant, and can be used by others as a reference too Good luck, you are doing the right thing by stripping it down If you need part numbers, just ask Dusty

The symbol on the inside of the one piston looked familiar . So i had a look at a stash of pistons i have in my shed and it is a KHC industrial co ltd . Made in China . They are supposed to be not very good . A friend of mine ran a pair in his Tzr 250 for years with no problem . I did read some where the rings on them can break up and talked him into getting some new rings for them .If i remember we needed to modify the rings because the cut outs in them were in a different place . The fine oil stone and diamond needle files came in handy that day . Just looked on ebay £18 posted for a piston kit says it all Steve

Hi Dusty, yes, when I stripped the engine the tacho drive shaft was there but did not have the drive gear on it and when I removed the shaft from the casing one of the retaining screws sheared off, as it was already running an electronic tacho I decided to not bother trying to get the screw out and risk damaging the casing and just leave the drive shaft out, T&L said they would get the screw out for me for £35 but I could not see any reason to do that at this point.
