What bike is this for? Sounds like a 250/350LC. I have a used spare cover knocking about somewhere if it's of any help.

Never been but I did watch The Motorcycle Show when Cole visited. Bizarre to say the least. £40k+ bikes and all they seem to do to them is put a digi dash and a different seat on them. Not an oil leak in sight, no spanners lying about. When I go to a bike shop the last thing I'm thinking is can I get a shave there and a decent espresso. Poseurs only club.

Avoid Greenstuff pads. Expensive and useless. Had them in the Spitfire and they were new. Brakes almost non-existent. Plonked in Mintex ones and they are a revelation.

One sure fire way to know it works.
Apply stripper to part.
Sit down to watch it work.
Immediately stand up screaming in pain as a drop landed on the chair you were sitting on.
Observe hole in jeans and burn mark on bum.

Thanks lads! Steve was bemoaning the loss of his beloved Jag because of ULEZ. And Jon, no idea mate. He did say 'might'. But whatever he has to do is fine by me as I know I'll have a stem that fits perfectly!

He popped round today. Measurements were taken, and his initial thoughts were it's a simple job. That soon became more complicated (why does this always happen?) but it's doable. The plan is to make a new stem to replicate the LC one so standard bearings fit, however he will have to make a new top yoke nut and perhaps the lower one too. Steve has a busy workload so he said maybe 2 weeks and if I haven't heard from him by then phone him. He's a lovely chap but after that we had a 45 minute chat about ULEZ, classic cars, bikes, how things were better in the eighties and so on. LOL. I can wait. It's not like this has been the fastest ever rebuild. And I need to finish the flooring here. Done the loo, the kitchen, the hallway and the lounge. Next up is the stairs...

Why write 'cafe racer' on the tank? Years ago I bought some pencils in Tesco and they were yellow. It actually said 'yellow pencil' on them. Seems pointless. (pun intended)

Looks like plenty of resto work there Dusty, but like you I enjoy that kind of thing. Taking a manky old part and making it look brand new again.
Interesting idea about the engine. But what will you do with the cafe bike? It must owe you a small fortune and I know you love it but it's basically a very expensive paper weight right now. How much would a bespoke loom cost? If you had that done and an up and running bike then it's worth a bundle...

Legend stuff is legendary for all the wrong reasons. I bought a genuine Yamaha linkage for less on eBay last year. Norbo sells them too.

Good news! Dusty gave me a phone number for his engineering mate, Steve. He lives surprisingly just round the corner from me and he popped by last week to examine my yokes...(not a euphemism)...and agreed that a new stem needs to be made, basically identical to an LC one but shorter. However he wants the lower bearing fitted. Ordered, fitted and he's coming over again on Wednesday to measure up and take it away. So maybe this week...the front end goes on.
