Very nice A mate of mine had one from new, in Skoal Bandit colours. Mark Dent is one of the "goto" guys for these bikes. Does some pretty trick work with them. I look forward to your progress Dusty

Cheers Dusty I’ve looked,at his site once I got my head round it’s four of everything the prices are no different to our lc bling the fairing is one of those Chinese jobbies and it’s a cover on the tank but it will be getting the tank painted properly at least

Looks like nice rider, you will need some deep pockets for the engine, 2 cranks 4 pistons etc... Mark Dent is your man for these, as Dusty says. got the bigger brother, sadly hardly use it, keep trying to make my self use it but end up on the LC2 Good luck with the resto

I need a manual took me 40 minutes to work out how to get the tank off ! Plugs are black that will be why it’s really sluggish below 4000 then it rips your arms off The frame has slight corrosion marks you can’t feel them with your finger nail but autosol doesn’t take them off anyone got a good answer,I don’t want it polished I like the standard finish

I had the same probs with my rg250 frame corrosion that affected the anodised finish I don’t think there is a great deal you can do about it. I’m sure someone will no doubt correct me 😀

Bin the air snorkel Bin the trumpet gauze filters Go to 120 MJ Drop the needle a notch Air screws 1.5 turns out balance all 4 slides properly and adjust the oil pump drain the 2T tank and use fully synthetic tickover screws are different front and rear carbs Don't use iridium plugs good old B9ES Fuel tap leaks. use in line taps Float valves leak. Replace them and it will still leak. Put Grose float valves in, it will still leak 2T oil valves stick open, put a tray under the bike to catch the oil Centre crank bearing runs in gearbox oil. Change gearbox oil every 1000 miles 2nd and 6th gears explode. Change them Clutch slips and drags. You need the revised clutch shim Clutch slips when you use synthetic gear oil. Put old style 10w40 in (see above)
std front forks are sh!te replace with VJ22 or GSXR or better. You will need 25-50mm riser clip ons otherwise you will trap your thumbs std wheel sizes are sh!te GSXR400 front and rear are the simple upgrade std ride height is sh!te Ride height adjuster required and get the static sag correct. Chain will be hanging off at static sag and tight as a tight thing on full compression. The engine is in the wrong place compared to the swing arm pivot std gear change is sh!te get a shift shaft support and rear sets
That should get you going.....

Don't rev it over 10,500 or it will destroy the cranks. Grampian are where MD sends his cranks (but gets a trade discount)
Before you know it it will sound like this

Never ridden one but oddly I have just finished reading a bike mag from Dusty about your 400. Seems is was a better bike than the 500, lighter, more nimble and almost as fast. The factory tuning kits gave it bonkers power with top speeds way past the 150mph mark. Gotta go for Skoal Bandit colours as that just is the pups dongle dangles!

Alex The 400 produced much less power than the 500. Other than that they are almost identical. Fuel gauge, slightly different pipes and jetting and needles. Everything else is the same My 400 kicks out about 65bhp about the same as a well setup VJ22. My std 500 Is about 85bhp where as the lightly tuned one is about 95 and the proper one about 110.
