Hi Rod, Crank case seals have got to be suspect on something of that age, especialy if you dont know its history. A crank case pressure test will tell you if they are duff or not, the info for that is on here or on the net. Where in Scotland are you ? Im in Ayrshire. steven.

Hi. 6 psi sounds correct for the pressure test from memorie. I would have thought the spark plugs would have held 6 psi, if they dont hold 6 psi, how will they hold 100 and odd psi plus ? Good that you got that result first go, did you use gasket goo/sealent on any of the gaskets ? Similar results would be expected from a vaccum test, but I dont think many do a vacuum test ? Sorry, I cant remember the figures for a vacuum test, when I did mine I got it off the net somewhere, and pulled the vacuum using a brake bleading kit. The info for doing a vacuum test will be on here or it is on the net somewhere. steven.

Hi, I would say that is a good result, what pressure did you test it at ? Did you find where the 1 psi was coming from ? Did you also do a vacuum test as well ? Did you get that reslult first go, or did you have to repair any leaks to get that result ? Cheers, steven.

Hi, I had one years ago that was like that. I suspected it had also been in a font end shunt, but the forks were strait, so had obviousely been changed. If you run a finger down the two front frame down tubes you could feel a "crease" approx 1/4-1/2 way down on the front face of the front down tubes, where as on a "good" frame there was no crease. The tank also had a bollock shaped dent right at the back. Months after I bought it, I met a guy one day who told me that he knew the bike and told me that it was indeed in a front end shunt as the bloke that had it, t**tted it into the side of a car. The same bloke confirmed that the dent at the rear of the tank was indeed made by the blokes bollox ! steven.

Hi, Happy New year for 2017 to all. I went out the back yesterday and today to clear all the leaves etc up in the garden. On clearing up all the leaves, I found these daffodils poking through ! I dont know if it is normal for them to be poking through on the 1st of January or not ? but Im telling myself it is a sign that we are going to have a great summer ?! Thats the festivities over for me as Im starting back at work on nightshift tonight. :-( All the best. steven.

.....ehrm... snap on torch, barry sheene book, guy martin book, sex pistols record (as in vinyl !?!) a bottle of grey goose vodka, a callendar with nice ladys on it and a bottle of absynth !
The bottle of absynth was interesting. I had mentioned absynth previousely and someone picked up on this and santa brought me a bottle. I have never tried absynth, but had heard about it and thought i should at least try it. It said 55% on the bottle, the only mixer we had was my young lady friends smirnoff ice. We had one. just in the bottom of a glass, strait, just to see what it tasted like... it smelt nice and tasted like badgers pish ! We poured two more and topped up the glasses with smirnoff ice and it was delicious, i realy liked it, we had quite a few, several infact, and the next thing I saw was the absynth bottle being taken back to the kitchen, and being told, "that the absynth was going back to its cupboard, as i,d had enough !"
In the morning on asking why the absynth bottle was removed while still half full, I was informed that I was talking about three different things all at the same time !
I enjoyed the absynth and will drink the rest soonest.
Happy Christmas, Cheers !

I was going to buy this one, as i dont have a pillar drill in the garage, but as my 1950 Myford ML7 lathe I got a few years back, came with a vertical slide for milling on, I just use my Lathe as a drill. Every time I feel the need for a pillar drill, I manage to do it on my lathe and vertical slide. I dare say the day will come when I want to drill something that is too big to fit the lathe, when that day comes I will nip down to tool station and get one of these, its a Draper one, so cant be just as bad as a cheap and nasty chinese thing? , but id hazzaed a guess it probably is, but it will suffice for occasional home garage use. Remember to get a drill vice also when you buy your new pillar drill. I have heard some people recently saying "Draper is a good make"........ does anyone else remember when Draper were considered poor quality stuff, and you would not have been seen dead with draper shite in your tool box ? Sorry for being a "spanner racist." Happy Christmas. Steven. www.toolstation.com/shop/Power+Tools/d40/Bench+Tools/sd3353/Draper+350W+5+Speed+Bench+Drill/p83849

Do you think there are lots of knackered drums out there The story goes that the cast iron brake drum rusts/corrodes in the alloy wheel and then swells and goes oval. I have had it and have also heard about it, not sure if its one of those urban myth things or not, but something seems to happen as I have read about it on several occasions, and it sounds like a good theory to me, clocking the brake drum will let you know before building it up.

.......I also have weld repairs on various parts of my LC,s....... but none on the alloy wheels, its just not good practice in my opinion. I understand 350 wheels are getting harder to get now, as I have been looking recently, but if it was up to me, Id look for another wheel as I would not use that one.

....what did you use to take the wheel bearings out ?......"A JCB ?"
The drum looks kind of rusted, so you would need to check the drum is true with a clock gauge before you decide your next move, if the drum is oval, which they often are these days, you will need to get that skimmed too.
Im sure someone would be able to repair it and make it look ok, but do you realy want to be driving about with a "welded up" 30 odd year old alloy wheel in a motorbike ?....... I wouldnt.

... I was listening to Radio Caroline live on 1368 AM/MW via Manx Radio on the Isle of Man again today. Like LC,s, I suppose its just another nostalgia thing.
Here is a utube video I made this afternoon of my 1964, Sailor 46T Marine Radio/Direction Finder, they used these on boats for navigation before the days of satellites.
Most of the navigation beacons that this used are gone now, but there are still a few about. It looked like it had been dragged out of a fishermans arse when I got it !... but it cleaned up ok and works great with my home made loop antennas. At over 50 years old it is still going strong and works great. I think Plastic Bertrand is the closest we are going to get to a "punky" song from Radio Caroline. ! steven.

Sorry for jumping on your thread Tigwelder, Tell, I have the same feelings regarding exposed threads. I also have stainless steel (flange nut/dome nut) "shite hoose" fixings on my exhaust studs, which are M8 x 45mm grub screws, so I can screw them in and out easily with an allen key. The extra weight isnt realy a problem, as I always make sure I go for a three coiler prior to going out on my LC !

Hi OEB, Bahhh !.... Fek, Id have paid £75 for it but not £200 odd quid ! I dont read all the threads/posts, just the ones that take my fancy, and I obviousely didnt read that one. I have been slowly gathering bits and pieces to build another LC and am always on the look out for a decent 4L0 rear wheel, but I have missed the boat with that one, I have 250 wheels, but not another 350 one. Oh well, thanks for the heads up anyway. Cheers. steven.

Hi, On my 4L0,I used s/s plain washers, s/s plain nuts and finished it off with a s/s dome nuts. Probably a bit overkill, but Elsie is worth it !.... and it keeps the shite out the end of the thread on the studs, so that when it is stripped down the next time, it hopefully wont screw the studs out, and they will stay in the top half of the crank case. steven.

Hi, I have not had this problem with an LC, but I did have a similar problem with one of my 2 stroke Villiers engines a while back. I looked into getting a flywheel/magneto rotor re magnetised, as they can loose their magnetisim or flux. I spoke with a local Lucas/CAV auto electrical place and was told that the gear to do this was in loads of garages years ago, but not the kind of thing you would realy find many people doing nowadays. In the Villiers book, it tells you to place a piece of iron ( a spanner in practice) across the poles of the magnets when the flywheel is off, to stop it loseing its magnetisim. At the time I looked round the net, and there are places that can re magnetise your rotor, but in practice it was easier for me to source another rotor. A quick look round the net and I found some pics, the lambreta one has pics of them re doing one, but as said above, in practice, if it is suspect, a replacement rotor would probably be easier. steven. www.ilambretta.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1171www.mtfca.com/discus/messages/80257/83674.jpgwww.mtfca.com/discus/messages/80257/83215.html?1236225039

... mine never starts first kick... as I usualy give it half a dozen kicks or so, with wide open throttle and the igniton off, to ensure a good charge of petrol/oil mixture has gone through the engine beofre I attmept to fire it up.
