You can run either 520 or 530 it does not matter providing both sprockets and chain are the same. A lot of racing bikes change from 530 to a 520 chain and sprockets to reduce weight and friction. Apparently it is worth a few bhp especially on bigger bikes but at the expense of wearing out a little quicker due to 520 being a lighter chain but on a 350 a 520 kit would be more than upto the task, I fitted them to my 500lc and no issues. Rich.

Went on my 500lc to the Cotswold Bike Nite last night at Fladbury just outside Evesham. A 350 LC's and TZR250 v-twin there, as usual good turn out and variety of bikes. The 500 got it fair share of attention again. Vinnie if you read this I think we passed each other going in opposite directions going through Tewksbury between the big supermarket and PJ Nichols garage, at least I think what you only really twigged as we passed. Rich.

Its real sad when these deaths happen. I believe that is 3 competitors dead this year, hopefully no more, not sure if any members of the public have died this year as well. 1st Simon Andrews, 2nd Bob Price and now 3rd Karl Harris, sad, sad, sad. Never met Simon or Karl bet met Bob a few times through a friend who builds classic race engines he was a real nice chap who raced modern bikes and Classic bikes on the main land and the TT and Manx/Classic TT. Have been to the Manx TT for the last 4 years with my Brother in Law who races there and each year some one has died yet they all put it aside and carry on racing for the sheer buzz and adrenalin rush it brings them even, in the pit lane and paddock the buzz and anticipation is addictive - amazing men all of them. RIP and best wishes to all their families and friends.

Rode down to Abergaveny me on the RD500 and the Mrs on her 600 Hornet, cracking weather. First time I have been down there, about 40 mile away so a 85+ mile round trip with a couple of deviations on route, as I pulled into the car park two lads I know from Gloucester come walking across. There were 2 350 LC's there both with Allspeeds one with small cans 1 with large cans. The one bike was relatively stock, ie pipes, steering damper, micron fork brace etc looked very nice, the guy also has a RG500, the other one owned by Dave - had a KR1 front end, Metmachex swingarm with a rear disc fitted, YPVS engine, large can original Allspeeds and loads of other trinkets - looked superb. There was also a beautiful TDR250 with wide gold rims - lovely - the guy has some Lomas pipes coming for it, will have to revisit and hopefully he will be there with it. The LC's generally had loads of interest, also talking to a guy - Gareth who has 2 500's one of which Stan Stephens tuned, good banter, cracking weather and nice to meet other enthusiasts. Will be back. Rich.

I used the standard Gamma radiator on my RG MK3 31k Yamagamma and had no issues. Had a tapping put in the top of radiator as per the standard 31k rad had, ran thermostat as well, all fine. Rich.

I've seen picture of a bike somewhere on the Forum where they had made a bracket that replaced the end cap of the power valves on the left hand side of the engine which the servo was then mounted to but cannot find it now, thought it was quite a good idea. If anyone knows the bike/picture please post it. Rich

Stevep, was it a good turn out for the first Cotswold bikers nite. Did not make it as worked on last night and would not have got there until 8ish, hope to get to a few this year on the 500lc and hopefully see Vinnie there on his 500, there is also another guy Roger in the area who is quite often at the events on his 500, Roger took his up Prescott Hill at the recent Bike Festival. This may be a long shot but I once when putting carbs back on did not connect the little rubber tube that links the two carbs together and the bugger would not start put the pipe on she fired up, strange but true.

Cracking looking restoration you have done there congratulations and a real joy to ride I bet. Have never been to Abergaveny on bike have driven there a couple of times but not when the bikes gather. Is it usually a Sunday they meet, I understand quite a few can turn up on a sunny day. Will have to make the effort as it is only about 40 miles away. Rich.

If you look in Norbo's shop trick bits section he does billet manifolds with different size rubbers depending of size of carbs being used so I would say you would not get 34mm carbs into standard rubbers, they also look good cost a bit more than just new reed block manifolds but good kudos value. The filters would not be a problem to get, just do a search or email Norbo he no doubt does them anyway. He will no doubt respond at some point anyway as he is always on here. Rich.

Very tasty looking bike, love the colour scheme. Are the pipes Lomas retro's. They look real good a bit like the Gibson/Allspeeds and how do they perform and sound. Is the rear mounting bracket a bolt on one which would enable different shaped brackets to be used to mount in different locations. cheers Rich.

The cans look ones you can buy off ebay - type in 2 stroke cans and they come up from seller in Worcester, they look like the ones Higgspeed are also supplying with their new GP style pipes. AS for the pipes themselves - not sure Rich.

We should be at the Classic TT too this year helping with the spannering and pit crew with PACRE Honda racing a Honda CB350/4. May take my RD500 if we can squeeze it in the van with all the other crap we seem to take each year. Good luck with the racing and will come and find you all being well.

Bought his book at the last Stafford show, started reading it and could not put it down, a real good read. It's quite amazing what he has actually done and achieved, far play to the man.Has helped a lot of people along the way an I mut admitted I did not realise quite how much 4 stroke tuning he has done too. Well worth buying, even got mine signed by him at the show. Rich.

Jetting
Jan 23, 2014 10:11:10 GMT 1
Post by richb on Jan 23, 2014 10:11:10 GMT 1
Hi biffa, if the jets are too small it runs weak and gets hot to the point where the piston top will melt and if you do not catch it quick enough the top of the piston will/could hole and the piston will sieze in the barrel. I have found that you get a momentary loss of power just before it siezes. If you catch it quick enough you do not neccessarily do too much damage to the barrel and in the past have got away with just honing the barrel and a set of new pistons and rings the same size as being used at the time. Running on the weak side is not a good idea, mine rev'd like hell through the gears and was fine untill held open, jetting right up to 320's meant it did not rev quite so eargerly but at least it did not sieze up again. The trouble is it all varies greatly depending on tune, pipes, reeds and filters. Back when I was messing around with jetting it was plug chops but now with dyno's and gas probes readily accessable that has to be the way to go. Rich.

Well done Dave a superb bike you have built there. Roll on some sunny days and some blasting round the FOD and out towards Hereford, Chepstow. You will have to come along to some of the Wednesday night bike meets they have a couple out the Forest way - "Cotswold Bikers Nite" always a good turn out for these. Rich.

Jetting

23years ago now on my 350ypvs with a Stan Stephens Stage 3 tune, hytech reeds, foam filters and Stephens/Lomas F2 pipes I was running 320 main jets which were on the safe side, did have at one time 270's in but it seized after running high revs for a while. I think the 320 were too big but at least it never seized again. Best bet is to get in set up on a dyno really. 23years ago !!!!!! my god its scary where the time has gone, and am still messing about with my 350ypvs engine albeit it a yammagamma and a 500LC...... Good times. Rich.

Hello rhino if you have not already, have a look on the rzrd500 web site you will have to do quite a bit of searching but there is quite a lot of info and thoughts on this. The general opinion i believe is standard air box set up works fine and junking the air box and trumpets that go from the carbs and installing air filters directly to the carbs causes loads of jetting issues. But what seems to be an option that works is to just remove the air box that is directly behind the head stock and install filters on the ends of the trumpets such as Unipod filters, cannot remember which ones though for sure possibly 4060 ?. The research I have done for mine with standard tune and Lomas GP pipes jetting I am using is 175 front carbs and 185 rear carbs but junking air box and installing pod filters jetting advice (only) that I have gleaned from the site would indicate 220 and 230 jets and a change of needles to smooth everything out, the needles apparently also work well with a bog standard bike. Search Ivans RD500 jet kit. What jetting difference the SS st3 tune makes do not know but as before have a look on the rzrd500 site for quite a bit of usefull info. Where are you in the country. Rich.

Hi Thumper, very generous offer you are making, excellent. Should be coming again for the Classic/Manx TT 2014. This will be our fith year spannering for my Mrs brother who races a CBR600rr and a SP1. This year we also have a Honda 500/4 classic to compete with hopefully in the GP class. If I can borrow a van I hope to bring my RD500 over this time, last year we drove the car and the year before we hired a van and I bought my CB1300 and the Mrs her CG125 on L-plates - fantastic time. My 72 year old Mum also flew over and I had to take her for a couple of laps. She loved it motoring on over the mountain. She did comment it was a bit faster than Dad's old Velocette. Fantastic place, fantastic atmsphere especially camping in the paddock, fantastic people. Not so sure about the new time table of Classics at the start and the Manx at the end of the week. Kind of gave a little bit of them and us feeling to the event, but heho. If we manage to pull off the 500/4 and CBR600 and SP1 plans though we will be busy start to finish. I will keep in touch nearer the time especially if I do bring the RD500 over would be good to meet up. Rich.
