Hi all from Greece, I recently got myself a 1985 RD350F and I'm heading for a stripdown and complete rebuild. I was inspired by some of the bikes in this forum. This time around in Greece we go thru an ecomomic meltdown, spirit is low so I had to do something for myself (except from working my a** off every day). Here are some pictures of it IMG_1023 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr IMG_1025 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr IMG_1055 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr Started working on it a couple of months ago, can work on it only during the weekend so progress is slow. Have a look at the inner mudguard IMG_1050 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr The engine mount was a bit worse A part of it is missing IMG_1047 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr Will post more pictures! Cheers

Got your work cut out there, are you going to cut/weld new mount for frame ? I've not seen one break there before ? Cheers Matt

Hi there,
This damage is weird isn't it?? Have some cracks on the rest of the frame but this one stands out, bad think the piece is missing. I think Im going to fabricate the missing part myself.
And yes we are in deep s**t, and getting deeper. Luck and parts I'm going to need!
Thanks

I reckon the shock is toast, and maybe the kids were jumping this bike on the farm, hence the damage. So it is fantastic that you are restoring this machine, good luck!

Thats what I think of the shock also, what I discovered is that the setting was at less than 1. As soft as it can go.. but then again who knows what the previous owner has done with it. From the rest of the repair jobs he has done to the bike I can tell that he was no genius.
30 years of up & down must have taken the best out of it. I want to go for a new F2 shock and get rid of the belt also.
Thanks for the comments!

Have a look at the handlebar IMG_0019 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr Should it have this bend? the L/H side is exactly the same. Road rush or was it made like that? Kostas

Hi Steve,
I might try to heat those up and straighten. Engine mounts both cracked.. I would say that there should not be that much stress at those points.
I have seen someone doing a repair on the same area in this site, tried to find it but I can't. Good luck with your build, I'm keeping an eye on it.

you could also try the R6 shock, I listed my thoughts on how i did that on my 85 on my www.2smoked.com website - see my signature etc.

What I wanted is to keep it as standard as possible, even the F2 shock would not even be an option if the original shock was repairable. I would not get a used F1 as I already have a bad one here! No need for a second one.

Hi, Made some progress this week, faricated a steel angle to weld on the engine mount IMG_0023 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr got it welded.. also rewelded some old repairs around the sidestand area, IMG_0024 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr Then I trimed it and duplicated the hole. IMG_1158 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr IMG_1156 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr The frame is now going for powdercoat. I'm now polishing my wheels which are pitted and look like s**t. Have seen what mellow did with his wheels and hope I have a similar result. So far my hands look like a coal worker, no shine whatsoever ;D Cheers Kostas

I got my frame back from powder coat this week, Looks a bit more orange in the pictures than it realy is, IMG_0025 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr Here is the repaired area, IMG_1174 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr They did a very nice job, better than I expected Still sanding down the wheels, the frond had very deep groves from the lathe, I had to start with 80 grit dry paper on a power sander to get it flat. Great forum this one, would never start the rebuild if it wasn't for the forum. Cheers!

Got some time off from work so I finished with the wheel polishing! Did not manage to get some kind of cutting compound like T-CUT that I have seen other members use so I sand polished only. Went from 80 grit dry to 180, 320, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 grit and then i used this white brick thing (soap they call it) with a stiched mop and a power drill and i got this result, IMG_1200 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr Now I have to paint change seals and it is good to go. Is it black gloss or Satin that these were originaly painted with? Anyone knows? Rubbed down the swingarm also, had some dents and deep scratches filled with epoxy filler. IMG_0026 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr The chain must have broken of a thousant times on this bike. chain marks all over the place. Cheers!

Hi, Managed to move forward a bit, masked some bits which need primer and paint.. and finally got those primed this saturday IMG_0027 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr IMG_0029 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr Used sikkens epoxy primer (expensive staff ) but I hope it holds up. IMG_0030 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr IMG_0028 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr Next up is the paint and clear satin laquer. Managed to find someone to plate my original muddy and rusted nuts and bolts Will cost 15 Euro if I just have it all ready suspended on thin wire! not bad ;D Waiting for some goodies from Norbo this week so I might get a rolling chasis before the end of the month Kostas

Also moved on with painting my parts, so here are some pictures, IMG_0033 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr IMG_0034 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr IMG_0035 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr IMG_0036 by k.apostolopoulos, on Flickr Did the paintwork myself , the shop I got the laquer messed up and gave me flat laquer instead of satin for the wheels, but I think it is not that bad. Thank you all,
Yes polish was spot on! I see what you mean marsbar.. Big space there compared to what I have seen in the forum but it is located about 25 miles from home. Could live with a small shed right under my house
Will be slowing down the build as workload is high at work. Not very happy with that, but have to pay the bills + the wife's expenses...
