Some progress over the last week with the frame Cleaned the frame with KBS Aquaklean and treated with Rustblast. Not a lot of rust to treat, mainly just where cables etc. rub.
Two coats of Rustseal and some gloss clear topcoat. Sets like a rock. Mixed up a new bath of nickel plating solution and seeing how the head bolts go.

Funny its not until I take a photo and then notice that I have completely missed cleaning a gasket surface. And always fun finding the sins made by previous owners. See if you can find it.

The build can begin (if I can find all the parts, I did label them in containers.)

Looks like you have a good starting point with that bike. I think I would have just washed it and riden it! You going stock or off piste with it?

You don't have to add much to make it start looking like a motorbike

I was looking for my plastic restorer in the garage but could not find it. I might have chucked it out because it did not work so well. I will get some Mr Black. I did have a spray can of a UK product called Dash Dandy some years ago that was magic on exterior plastics. The Land Rover Discovery bumpers had started to turn a sparkly grey and it brought them back to black. I was never able to find the active ingredient or the product again. I see now it has appeared again but it looks like it may be silicon based although there is a non-greasy one.

One step forwards two steps back How much time do you spend fixing the PO problems? Someone decided that it would be a good idea to chop off the rear indicator stalks. I tapped what was left of the tubes, cut down some nuts to lock them and threaded the stalks in, a bit of a trim with the cutoff wheel and it will be sweet. A little narrower than stock but it will work.

Found something strange happening with my nickel plating - the copper wire I used to attach the nickel plate fell into the solution. After a while the copper wire dissolved dropping the nickel terminal and coating the target with a thin film of copper that did not really stick. After polishing, the result was a green colour on the plated parts similar to the original Yamaha plating.

Love the threaded in indicator stalks on the back, superb! Just checked to see that the tailpiece clears the stalks and it does. I made up spacers in alloy with external threads on one end to bolt to the bike and internal to thread in some aftermarket inds for my 421 as the bodywork hit the inds, so pleased for you that you got the clearance. You probably know but there are two lengths of those stalks, the short ones are LC2, the longer ones are LC.

Back on its wheels. Bit of a sad centre stand but I should be able to weld something on the end to make it work.

Sadly the YPVS chain guard isnt the same and I doubt it will fit, it would certainly need some mods. There must be some out there tho just gotta wait until someone sells one on ebay i guess.
Otherwise, great its coming on!

And the motor goes in. Had to be careful with how much I could lift so left the barrels off. One positive from another lockdown is it focusses me on the resto. Yes they are worn out socks taped to the frame for protection. And Jonw you will notice I did finish the air cleaner box with Bowdens Own Mr Black

Hot water pipe foam lagging works well too for wrapping around the frame for engine removal or installation

Ive had good results with it, great on the faded ends of the airbox etc.

Hot water pipe foam lagging works well too for wrapping around the frame for engine removal or installation I found it a bit thick and the engine was too high, i went back to old socks taped on just like shown here.

It wasnt the socks... theyre too damn useful! (you might need to press them back into action for their intended next week Chris, that polar ice cap melt is heading your way according to the news!)

Rain and southerlies means snowfalls on the ranges but I won't be going skiing this year unless it is in the backyard. We did have an unusual very light snowfall a few years ago but I don't think it will be cold enough in Melbourne.
