Just a quick update. Oil pump has been bled and no longer running on premix. Head bolts re-torqued. Coolant added. Had a couple of leaks I had to sort, usual problem using old hoses and original clips. Hopefully sorted, but will keep an eye out for weeps. Now starts easily, and ticks over nicely, not too smokey. Went up and down the gearbox a couple of times and seemed ok on the bench.
Was going to bleed brakes, but realised I needed some new brake fluid. My local Halfords doesn't stock DOT3 so ordered on line. I'm off on holiday so a job for my return, but nice feeling to go away knowing I've got a runner to return to.

Great job Shaun, it has turned out beautiful Don't let thoughts of the final tweeks interrupt your holiday but yeah, the graft has paid off. John

I'm back off holiday and had a chance to finish a few things off. So firstly a reminder, the bike turned up almost exactly 12 months ago like this.... I did a dry build to see what bits I had, what needed changing/refurbing etc and also to get an idea how it went together... Followed by a full nut and bolt strip down and rebuild. I'm happy to say it now looks like this..... A bit of fettling and road testing now needed before MOT. I have some small decals somewhere that I can't find for the finishing off. Starts easily and ticks over nicely, so I'm a happy bunny.

That looks great! {whisper} just a bit of black paint on the bikini to finish it off and its done... What's next? Thanks Jon. I assume you mean the inside of the nose fairing. I've seen pics of these both in both white and black for the French blue, so wasn't sure so left it white at this stage. It is a gen Yam one and came to me in white although I got it repaired and painted. It wont be difficult to paint the inside black. What's next? This.....

At the very least the bit under the screen, but I'd do the inside too as I thought they were all black from new. Anyway, moot point if youve seen OEMs that were all white from new Wow! now that's a project and a half! Its going to be super satisfying to sort that out

Jon - I see what you mean now about the bit under the screen. Thank you.
Yes, the next 12 months of my life are allocated to sorting the next one out. I will probably start that at end of the summer, I want to ride a bit and got a few other bits and pieces to do before I get my teeth into it.

That is a nice bike. Is the next one another 31k?

That is a nice bike. Is the next one another 31k? No, its a 4L1 UK matching numbers frame/engine I managed to get hold of. I've a load of parts kicking around so thought it would be a good project to use some of them up on. I usually try to buy project bikes as complete as possible, so this goes against the grain, but projects seem to be thin on the ground, especially as I prefer original builds.

Looks like a good project Shaun. A bit of work in that but well fixable. Projects are still out there but getting rarer to find as you say and a little more expensive too. Another good build thread to look forward to

Turned out very nice indeed That new project looks a bit "challenging" to say the least. Did you drag it out of the Humber I know you said you have a few bit's already but is that all you got with it that you've shown in the photo?

Thanks Steve, just got some running in/settling down things to sort on the 31k, but overall I'm very pleased with it. Regards the next project, what's in the picture is what I bought. In fact its a bit more than I expected as the fella described it as a frame, swinger and crankcases, but comes with a bit more than that, in respect of a crank, gearbox, outer casings, half a knackered loom, knackered shock and possibly a usable battery plastic box. How much is usable I don't know, but I like a challenge. I have been stashing lots of LC bits over the years, so need to dig them out to see how much I have that can be used on this project, but will do that after the summer. Hope you are enjoying your bike. Cheers.

The bike is splendid, I ride the same model as you, do you have the reference of the front seal caliper ? Thank you.

Bit of an update. When I took it out for road trials end of last summer I wasn't happy with the gear change, was far too stiff, I hoped it would improve but didn't, so over winter decided to investigate. Long story short, it was the selector drum bearing that was the main problem. I fitted what I thought was a gen Yam one, someone gave it me with some other stuff I bought, but turned out not to be. Replacement bearing cost me about £14, and about 40 hours to strip and rebuild the engine. Grr. Whilst I was at it I also did the star wheel mod, and also fitted a pro-shifter at the same time. Test riding again over the last few days has shown a massive improvement, so time well spent in the end. I also managed to source an original 31k headlight, so fitted that and also a home made rubber sleeve from a push bike inner tube... At same time I painted the inside of the nose cone black, and the lower tips of the side panels satin black as I originally overlooked these items. I've now done 50 miles on it, all very good and today I took it for its first MOT in about 23 years and flew through. Happy days. Sadly, it now needs to go as space is needed for the next project, so will be listing it shortly if anyone is interested.

What is the star wheel mod?

What is the star wheel mod? Essentially you grind off the peaks on the star wheel on end of of the selector drum, helps with gear selection. I think you can buy these already modified, but I did it myself. 10-15 mins on a grind wheel all it took. Can be used with the original shifter or the pro-shifter. There has been several threads on this topic so if you do a search you will see more details on it.
