Where's this paintwork? I'm itching to see it! All will be revealed soon. Its back at the painters for lacquering over the decals and I will collect later this week. What I've seen so far is very pleasing, and watching the guy at Image Works apply the decals with ease is impressive.

I saw some other LC and LC2 tanks waiting, but can't remember seeing GSX stuff, but wouldn't be on my radar really so could have been in front of my nose! I'm sure they will do you a good job and great service, they have done several sets for me but I usually book an appointment and drive down with them and sit watching in admiration as they fit them.

Paintwork all complete. Very happy. Better get my finger out now and complete the bike and get these bobby dazzlers fitted. Messing about trying to sort the electrics at moment. Not my best skill set!

Hi shaun, Paint looks spoton π can I ask were you had it done? Cheers rob I used a company called Ideal Bodyworkx in Hull for the paintwork, but I took them to Image Works in Ilkeston for the graphics. Very happy with the finish and service. They turned it round in 2 weeks whereas some of the other painters I spoke to had a 4 month waiting list.

Well, more good news.
I spent a couple of evenings tinkering with the electrics and can now happily say it looks like all the switches and bulbs etc all work as they should and the servo motor cycles on switch on.
Was frustrated after the first night at it as seemed I had lots of issues, but left it for a couple of days, then went back to it with more patience and some fresh thoughts. Slowly worked my way through them. Re-charged the battery, re-tapped the earth, cleaned up a a few connectors, had to re-solder one joint, tidy and clean fuse box. Usual stuff. Biggest win though was replacing 3 bulbs in my clocks as up until then I didn't have a neutral light, oil light nor left indicator. Solved all in one sweep.
Happy days. Just hope the rest of the electrics work once I get it running, but its a good start.

Bit of advice if anyone can help. I rebuilt the clocks some months ago.... When I fit to the bike, connect battery and switch on the ignition I notice that the temp guage needle lifted to around the 9 o'clock position rather than stay on the stop at 7 o'clock. Engine not running and garage was at best 20 degrees. I was happy in that it seems to have some life in it, and suspect I replaced the needle to the wrong position. Does it usually stay on the stop when engine cold or not running, with ignition on, or does it lift at all. If so how much so i can get the needle correctly set? Thank you.

I found this in another thread.... so will use this as a guide when setting my temp needle using my sender, kettle and thermometer. How difficult can it be? Lol.

Another good evening in the garage. Sort of!
Managed to calibrate the temp gauge using diagram above and hot water at 40, 50 and 80 degrees. Just needed to reposition the needle until I got it about correct.
Whilst i was messing with the clocks, I decided to zero the mileage to match the rebuild. Even though its a UK bike its been off the road so long that DVLA have no recorded mileage for it, so no history to use as a guide. I will advise any potential buyer that it was zeroed on rebuild.
Sorted the horns too as forgot to do them yesterday. All work fine, just need to strip and paint them. In the past I have wasted time doing this only to find they didn't work when finally tested on the bike so this time thought I'd test them before putting the effort in.
Last job tonight was to set the powervalves and cables. Never done this before, and only roughly set them before getting power up. Well what a fiasco. Tried for an hour or so, didn't look right, switched the cables over in case they different length, still didn't look right. In the end I realised I'd made a schoolboy error and that the servo motor and cylinder head are marked with '1' and '2' for matching up the cables at each end and I was connecting 1-2 and 2-1. Daft lad. Simple job after that and looked right, so that's usually a good thing.
Steady progress.

Had a couple pf more evenings in the garage. Stripped and painted the horns, tie bars and gave a lick of paint to a better radiator I sourced as wasn't 100% happy with the one I had. Carbs and oil pump fitted, set and balanced. All cables fitted, throttle, clutch, speedo and tacho. All appear to function correctly. Time will tell. Radiator and hoses all fitted. Headlight and horns fitted. Had a fight fitting the handlebar grips, expecting blisters in the morning, but got them on in the end. This is how I left it tonight. Will sleep well!

Bike looks great Shaun π Is their much left to do on it? Main jobs on the build still to complete are the footpegs and exhausts to paint and fit, and a handful of little things. Then i will concentrate on getting fluids into it and hopefully get it running and brakes bled etc and then fit the bodywork. From past experience, commissioning the bike and getting it running well can be a timely and frustrating process, but i'm in no rush and would like to get in both looking and running great.

Looking great Shaun. Do you have much to do on the exhausts? I have a set of standard 4L0 250 ones for mine but they need a lot of work. I have the thickness of the needle left of Argon I'm my TIG welder gas bottle, I'm gonna need a re-fill, maybe two π

Looking really nice π
The secret to the grips is to spray the inside of them with hair spray, slide them on on and leave overnight for the spray to dry π
The next bit is by no means a criticism as I like it and will be fitting one to my next build. I only mention it as you called the title "stock"
Headlight rim was originally olive on the lc2 π
Let me know if you have any probs with the temp gauge, I probably have a spare

I've already cleaned up and decoked the exhausts and filled a couple of small dinks. I just need to straighten one of the mount brackets, then paint, bake and fit. Hopefully in the next week or so when time allows.

Yes that is how I did the grips. No problem with LH one but RH one seized about 70% on and I assume the hairspray started to set and wouldn't shift. Grr. Tried plenty of heat from airgun but got no where and was a struggle trying to push it further on. Eventually released it with heat and screwdriver under the rubber to break the seal, and a some WD40 and finally slid it on. It seems like you have to get it on in one swift action if possible otherwise the hairspray acts like glue not a lubricant. All done now, but harder than usual. With regards the headlight, I've been trying for 6 months to get an LC2 one with no luck. I have the correct bowl but the chrome outer is from another headlight but has the correct adjusters so that's a bonus. The lens is genuine LC2, but Euro spec at moment, but hope to change that if I can get a UK one, although my MOT man is usually ok with it as it is. So if anyone has a UK LC2 headlight for sale drop me a PM. Its been an interesting journey as I'm familiar with earlier LC's and what parts are easy/hard to locate, but LC2 parts have different parts availability rules strangely.

You must have used a "super hold" hair spray π€£
The chrome rim is most likely XJR 400 or r1z250 as they used the same headlight bowl and type of headlight
Wish I'd known about you needing the olive rim, I had 2 really good ones powder coated π¬
You can convert the lc2 headlight to UK spec with an LC glass. Pm me if you want details, I'll also give you a shout if I find another lc2 rim

Update time. I managed to get hold of a UK Koita headlamp glass thanks to Steve, and that's now fitted. Had a bit of trouble sourcing decent front footpegs, but thats been ticked off now, and new rubbers fitted to front and back set. I've been tinkering with the stock exhausts over the last few weeks. These were a decent S/H set I bought off Norbo some months ago, but need a good tidy up. A bit of a rub down and repair to a few minor dinks and scuffs. Sealed and filled with caustic soda for about 10 days to decoke them. I was amazed that around 1kg of coke and crap came out of each pipe.... I mangaed to prevent most going down the drain. Dried the inners with a hot air gun, then another rub down before painting with VHT. This stuff was recommended by someone on here about a year ago and I bought a couple of tins to try out. I built myself a vertical oven driven by bbq to cure the pipes in.... 2 hours at mk5 and this is the final result.... ... and then fitted to the bike You can see the pegs in that picture and also a peek at what the paintwork will look like. Next step is to get some fluids in it and give it a kick to see if we get a spark, a cough, a fart and a ring ding ding. Can't wait.

Nice job Shaun. Nearly there I'm glad you mentioned saving the old gunge from going down the drain! My first though was oh no! I spent days clearing the drains at my house of decades of debris not helped by a conifer filling the pipe with roots. The non-draining had caused damp issues in the house. I think I've developed an obsession with keeping them clear now. The pipes look as near to stock finish as I've seen. I'll get hold of some for mine.

I finally tried kicking it off today and wouldn't start and seems I have no spark. Grrr. Set it up with a temporary fuel tank with a 25:1 petrol/2T mix.
-I've fitted new NGK BR8ES resistor plugs (but tried a couple of other random plugs for a spark) -I've fitted NGK LZFH Non resistor plug caps -Checked resistance on alternator pick up (pulser) and checks ok -Checked the source coils resistance and checks ok -Tried 2 different ignition coils and neither result in a spark
My guess is a faulty CDI. Its fitted with a 29k-50 unit, which has signs that someone has tried to peel it open before. I also read on here that they are vulnerable.
Any other thoughts?
And the big ask.... does anyone have a working CDI they would be prepared to loan me for a few days to test if that's my problem?

Post by shaunthe2nd on Jun 13, 2021 21:49:37 GMT 1
Thanks for all the help with the CDI, had several offers one of which I took up. And great news...... it starts.... I'm like a proud father! 2-stroke in the bores and 25:1 premix hence all the smoke, but it runs after years of abandonment and a rebuild. Genuine tears.
