Well its been a while since I did a build thread on here, so thought its about time I contributed something new. All my builds to date have been stock, and have included a few 4L1 and 4L0 LC's , and an aircooled RD200 so fancied something a bit different. I posted an advert on here a couple of months ago and was offered a stripped down 31K YPVS from a nice fella in Ireland. It had about 75% of the parts, needs a full refurb and build, UK registered and matching numbers so ideal for a standard build. Warning- if yr not a member of the matching numbers olive green brigade you may want to switch off now! sorry. Bike turned up on a pallet.... It doesn't look like much even after unpacking.... So first job is to evaluate what I have, what is usable and importantly which parts are model/year correct. First thought was to quickly put it together and also reach out to a few people on here to try work out what parts are correct. So here it is as a rolling chassis.... I'm told that the wheels are incorrect, so have sourced a pair of early 31k's. More on that when I refurb them. Believe it or not' I've spent a lot of time on ebay, a trip to Norbo's and got some stuff off Dejan, and it currently looks like this.... This is just a very rough dry build. Since then I have sourced a genuine nose cone and a fibreglass belly pan, as the blue one in the picture isn't correct, looks to be off another model. I'm missing a few small parts but hope to pick them up as I go along. So this is my starting point. My plan now is to progressively strip it down, refurbing the parts as I go. I appreciate all comments and feedback, and piss taking etc. Also if anyone notices anything that isn't model correct please let me know as this is my first YPVS project.

Interesting project and good luck with the build π. The more I see the early 31K 's the more I like them π
Do you know what stock colour you are going to do?

Well you are a bit ahead of me, but as far as i know the stock colours were as follows..... ..and my preference is the blue..... My understanding is that whilst this is often referred to as 'French Blue' it was available in the UK, but not as common as the other colours. Can you, or anyone else confirm this?

The blue does look nice π I haven't seen many blue one about or the red and black one's lately. Most of them seem to be red and white 31K. I think it is similer to the F1 most of them are red and white but I have seen a blue one Yamaha did, but I don't know if that was in the UK as well.

I also plan to revisit your engine rebuild thread at some point as I plan to do that myself this time. I've done the top ends, clutch, oil pump and carbs several times, so opening up the crank and gearbox doesn't seem too scary.

Yea, the bottom ends are very straightforward, I'm sure you'll find it easy enough. Looking forward to your progress Dusty

Started with one of my favourite tasks - rebuilding the clocks. The bike didn't come with any but I managed to source what I thought was a mph set off ebay, which need a bit of attention. At first look, seemed reasonable.... When I tested, the tacho needle wouldn't move, and the speedo only a little. So stripped down and this is what i found... Both the speedo and tacho had been fitted with overlays, which had both come away and distorted probably due to moisture ingress, so that the needles couldn't fully operate. The speedo turned out to be a kph one with mph overlay, so odometer still in km's. So facias rubbed back to original plastic, and new semi-rigid facias fitted to speedo, tacho and temp guage. km gears removed and replaced with miles ones, so odo and trip now operates in miles... Mounting bracket now in olive green, wiring cleaned up, and clock back together and tested Just waiting on the casing lug that goes around the ignition key which Alan Kelly makes, otherwise clocks now complete. Wiring loom next.

The loom that came with the bike was an F2 one I think, so had to source an LC2 31k one off ebay again. Anyone need an F2 one give me a shout! The replacement one I got wasn't too bad but had a few missing connectors and had some repairs. As I haven't fitted a 31k loom before I decided to do a dry run and connect everything up so that I could see what is missing electrically and what needs repairing, and also how the loom is routed. The loom section in the headlight seems ok, just needs a clean up.... Bit of work needed to the loom and connectors to the CDI, Alternator and Servo controller. You can see that I labelled up all the connectors so I could work out what new connectors were needed and where to connect them. Sourced the connectors via Yambits (sorry), a donor loom I had and a generous gift from jessy03 on here, thank you. All connectors soldered up and fitted, as close to standard as I could find, and all labels complete. Everything now seems to fit. Loom and all other electrical parts cleaned and stored for later. One job of many ticked off for now. Well until I finally fit and connect up to a battery. Fingers crossed.

Looking good π Did you go with the French Blue? Thank you. I'm probably 4-6 months off painting if past builds are anything to go by! I've essentially dry built a box of rough bits and sourced most of the missing parts, and am now slowly stripping back and refurbing parts as I go. In the past I have stripped bikes completely, then refurbed the bits one by one, but find that the bits in boxes take more space than an assembled bike, so this itme only taking of the bits I'm working on. I should end up back to frame, then once painted, the fu bit, the rebuild will commence. Hopefully to coincide with paint work coming back. I am still favouring the French Blue though.

Had a stroke of luck I'd thought I'd share in case anyone else can benefit too.
I was looking for a headlight bowl for the 31k. Fowlers list them at Β£220, and Norbo shows them in his shop at Β£85 so Norbo's looks a good price for new.
On ebay SH ones are listed at Β£50-Β£60 and are a bit scratched. Whilst browsing I found one for an XJR400 that looks similar, and on further investigation found out its the same bowl as the 31k one. Billy bonus is that they are much cheaper - I got a very good one for Β£17, including the funny egg shaped brackets and fasteners. It came today and did a test fit and its perfect. I'm well happy.
Check they are marked 'YHA 167' on the rear and they should be correct.

It seems like good tanks, clocks and original nose fairings seem to be hardest parts to source. Some other minor parts quite rare too like the rear shock adjusting belt so need to be patient whilst looking for them. Some good people on here that help out with that though.

A bit more progress to report. I've made the decision to refurb parts as I take them off the bike, so next parts to come off are the brakes. Not my favourite job on a rebuild so thought I'd get it out the way. Removed the calipers, master cylinders and hoses etc. All stripped back, painted, and baked in the oven for good luck.... Re-assembled with new seals and pads etc... All cleaned and looking good now. All boxed up for safe keeping.... In addition managed to do a clean up job on the 2T tank... Its now full of bleach and sat on the draining board to try get rid of 37 years of drinking red! Might need some of that myself lol

Next job is to refurb the switch gear. To be honest they weren't too bad, but I'm sure they would look shabby once the rest of the bike is gleaming. Strip down and repaint, and new decals... .. and this is how they finished off. The inners aren't as fiddly as the 4L1/4L0 type so a lot easier to do. Very happy with them. Now wrapped and boxed. What's next?
