When I log onto the forum there's 2 threads I look for first, hoping to see an update, this one and yamark's 550 triple. Dusty - you are a real credit to the forum, always one of the first to welcome in new members and taking the time to offer helpfull advice / encouragement. I'm hoping you are going to contiue updating this engine rebuild thread, its better than a Haynes manual and by the previous posts its not just me that appreciate the effort you put in to help the rest of us. I know you said this is a spare engine and possibly not high on your list of priorities, but here's hoping you've got the time to keep it ticking over and the updates coming.
Cheers mucker

Hi Kind words Rostrum, thank you I love this forum and have benefitted hugely from the wise and knowledgeable guys on here over the years. A lot of what I pass on has been gleaned from fellow members, as well as my own experience building two strokes for the past 30 odd years ( like a lot of us I imagine !!) I do intend to update the engine thread. The tacho drive is the next part to fit, but then it's the crank which will be rebuilt, which is a cost I need to save a bit more for. Once that's done the cases can be fitted together and then it's the home straight - really easy engines to build - you just need the money !! I haven't had time for any of my bikes lately due to work commitments and diy at home which has stretched to 3 bedrooms, one of which is a major revamp with a new ceiling, electrics etc etc. My fault though - I convinced the missus it was time for a change and before I knew it I had ordered new built in wardrobes, carpet and everything else The blue hybrid hasn't been touched in weeks, the white Lc was sposed to be insured and ridden - that hasn't happened, and the black hybrid languishes in the corner of the garage virtually untouched since I bought it a year ago. My back problem has been playing up more and more too, so everything I do now is at a slower pace to prevent further aggravation. But I will finish the engine. Plans are for rebuilt crank, new clutch basket and rubbers, powdercoated cases and head and vapour blasted barrels. Hopefully I will tackle the tacho drive fitment shortly Regards Dusty

Great stuff. My engine build may overtake your excellent work, I'll try to do my best though!
I know what your going through with qork at home, I got the RD last summer, just after starting an attic conversion with entailed every internal wall on my upper floor coming down, whole new staircase from ground to third floor, and a full new roof, amongst the new ceilings, full re-wire, integrated fire alarm system, all new doors and windows etc.... alll just to comply with BC. And 95% of it done by me alone. It kinda takes over everything else, but when done you can have a rest on bike work!!!

Great to hear that you do the home rebuilding yourselves. I often hear people say that they have rebuilt their homes only to later realise that they had hired people to do it for them. Here in Sweden when I was a kid, almost no one hired professionals, now it is the other way round. Some think that anything with piping or electricity is black magic!

Regarding the engine: I tried the Shift Pro, but the rivet came off almost immediately. I am considering fabricating one myself but then probably fork the bearing to avoid bending.

Home rebuildings a young mans game plus when you get older you usually have more money so you can pay someone to do it for you. Ive had the builders in in June not been able to get the bike out for all their crap blocking the garage

Hi all It's about time to reignite this thread now. This engine is going into the carbon bike build, and as the rolling chassis on that is nearly done, my attention is turning back to this engine. I've saved enough cash for the crank rebuild now, so once the Xmas and new year madness has calmed down I will send it off to Pjme. I have the parts to fit the tacho drive in the top case, and Santa delivered a billet clutch basket, so I will be dusting off the pillar drill in January. Still some parts to buy but hopefully nothing expensive ! Dusty

Hi Rich I had started at a pace on this, but slowed when spare cash ran out. The immediate plan is to get the bottom cases closed, hence crank and tacho drive are the next jobs. I need to purchase some new Wiseco clutch damper rubbers for the basket rebuild too. I bought all the Yam bearings and seals at the start so luckily I have those already. This was a running engine originally in the blue hybrid when I bought it so I'm hoping to improve a little on what seemed a decent running motor. Dusty

Hey Dusty, Your thread was one of the first I came across when I first started on the forum. Your advice helped a lot when I dismantled the engine and when I bought all the bearings, seals and ancillary parts. I even marked the selector forks with insulation tape! My 350 4L0 is still in the early stages of rebuild at the moment, so the engine build will happen in a couple of months when my fingers can feel the nuts and bolts!! I haven't persuaded my 'beloved' to build on the kitchen table yet.... Happy New Year to you and the Carbon LC is looking beautiful. Rich

Hi A little later than planned but getting back to this now. I drove up to Wednesfield yesterday to pick up a new crank from Paul at PJME. He has always done my crank rebuilds and rebores, going back years, and I've always been really happy with the quality of work and service. When I saw that they would supply a complete new crank I decided to save up for one. Looks the business; 20170210_155331_zpsnnjdvova by David Miller, on Flickr That will drop straight in, plus Paul supplied new Yam crank seals too. Whilst I was there, he kindly measured my barrels and pistons for wear. I didn't know how long they had been in the engine and it's hard to tell condition just by looking ! Paul gave them the once over and declared them good to go - the pistons are Japanese Mitakas on .75. I cleaned them up when I stripped the engine so they look good and now I know I can re use them - I picked up some new circlips whilst I was there too; 20170210_155442_zpsp1eulhjn by David Miller, on Flickr He also supplied some Wiseco damper rubbers for the clutch , so when I get chance I will strip the clutch and fit those with the new billet basket. Just got to make some room on the bench and then I can get going !! Dusty

Dusty is that crank made up by them from new webs etc? If so how much was it?
My mate needs a new crank, and it's good to get an idea of the maximum it will cost.

Hi Jon I ordered it on a Thursday and it was built and ready by Monday, I collected it Thursday this week. It cost £378.00 with vat, and every part is brand new. I saw it on their website, and decided by the time I sent off a used crank for rebuild, there probably wasn't going to be a lot of difference in price. There are a few firms advertising new cranks but I've always used PJME and always been happy, plus they build it up rather than get them in built, so I feel as bike engineers building it up themselves, it will be as good as you can get. This engine build is going the same way as my last Ypvs, changing lots of parts whilst it's apart, but I hope not to do it again !! Dusty

Hi Started digging out all the parts that are going back into the engine today. I made up a list of a few bits that I want to replace as I go, so rang Fowlers with the part numbers - everything was in stock so hopefully will arrive tomorrow. Then I will carry on where I left off. I plan to clean up the head over the weekend too; 20170216_182427_zps1qoz5y6g by David Miller, on Flickr 20170216_182439_zpsj88rqiia by David Miller, on Flickr Once cleaned up I will repaint in satin but probably polish the top hose mounting for a bit of contrast. Parts arrived today at lunchtime, so the build is back on !! Whilst I was waiting for the Postman, I decided to strip the clutch basket ready for the new Mitaka billet item I bought a couple of months ago from Norbo. The basket is held on to the ring gear with 4 rivets that need to be removed. The trusty pillar drill got an outing into the sunshine; 20170217_113855_zpshiljxbq1 by David Miller, on Flickr Started with a pilot hole and then went up a couple of sizes until I had drilled the end of the rivet out. Then you can remove the back plate; 20170217_122028_zps7hu8gwon by David Miller, on Flickr 20170217_122122_zpslz8c84ra by David Miller, on Flickr It's interesting that the rubbers on this Lc basket are shaped; 20170217_123249_zpshvevourc by David Miller, on Flickr When I have done a Ypvs basket in the past they are just round in shape, plus the Ypvs didn't have the 4 little blobs that sit in the gear. You can now just take it all apart, and wash off any swarf in some petrol; 20170217_1233090_zpst8sxvfv7 by David Miller, on Flickr Quite a simple job really, but the pillar drill makes it easy. Tonight I plan on rebuilding it. Dusty

Cheers fellas Rebuilding the basket is a reversal of stripping it. I used a nylon automotive brush to make sure there was no swarf hiding in gear teeth, and then it was red gasket back on, then ring gear fitted; 20170217_175849_zps7ikhuuqf by David Miller, on Flickr 20170217_180313_zpsugdibwrh by David Miller, on Flickr The gear has to be eased onto the billet basket as it's a tight fit. Then the new Wiseco rubbers can go in; Back plate can go on now with the 4 screws that replace the rivets; 20170217_192833_zps3pdsbx9e by David Miller, on Flickr 20170217_183603_zpswufaucor by David Miller, on Flickr 20170217_193702_zpspwigu8yg by David Miller, on Flickr To make sure those screws never come adrift, I apply Loctite 270 to the threads. It's a permanent thread locker, unless you heat the screws up to 300 degrees then they will loosen !! Finally, refit the damper ring; 20170217_181208_zpsoopfmlcf by David Miller, on Flickr And that's it, the finished basket; 20170217_193725_zpsb17ec4bd by David Miller, on Flickr Dusty
