Shift Pro In My observation is sketchy imo.. studied it carefully.. once :-) A better bearing on the wee wheel following the shift star undulations? Want to buy a bridge while at it :-) The Shift Star mod is easy... Do it, you will Not be dissapointed. No one ever is. Grind down the points around those wee pins.. do a radius that leaves a couple off MM (no more than that) of metal around the pins. Fair it into smooth transition, with a good clean surface ensuring you don't add friction Suggest building a wee jig. A board with a pin the middle to rotate the Star on whilst grinding it...to ensure all lobes are equal and Smooth. Result is a light snick.. snick shift feel / action. Only the Neutral notch (unmolested) retaining any palpable action 'notchy-ness' *Substantially* Better: faster/lighter shifting than on my 600RR.. which has oem Undercut Dogs. That! was unexpected. No issues with missing a shift as result either.. Assuming the forks are still decent/unworn. This, along with it's oem light clutch action (no foolish 'strong' clutch springs) transformed my old Yama.

Thanks

Dusty, Firstly this is a good idea for a thread. I hope you do a YPVS one as well afterwards You did ask for comments/tips so I'll add my two pennith worth so far. Although you had the foresight to mark the selector forks, it's actually very easy to remember what goes where, as two of the three are the same part. The one on the left has 2 embossed on it, while the middle and left one has a 1 on it. I personally would not use stainless countersunk bolts inside the engine. They are not going to rust in all that oil so it has no benefit what so ever. All stainless steel is a relatively soft metal compared to some mild steels. A 10.9 CSK steel bolt is much less likely to not round off in the hex when tightening, or more importantly untightening. You might not worry about this during the build, but I gaurentee you (/ someone else) will worry about it when the motor is striped in the future and they round off trying to remove them. Jon

Hi Jon All input is welcome. There are far more experienced guys than me building these, and any tips or advice can only help anyone embarking on a rebuild. When I was stripping the engine I took loads of digital pics so I could have worked out the selector forks easily enough, but it was just as easy to stick a bit of tape on them and bag them up separately - absolutely no mistakes that way And stainless is a bit overkill I know, but I always buy stainless and have never had a problem. On my first builds I have had to remove stainless cap heads and it wasn't a problem. Still, it's a good point, and it enables guys to decide which way to go And I did do a Ypvs rebuild some years back - I will have to see if the pics have survived !! Regards Dusty

This is a great thread. I have a 250 engine that will need a rebuild, so you could tempt me to have a go myself. Thanks Dusty keep up the good work. Shaun

Hi Dusty,
Can you send me the link for the bolt & nut for the gear change Mechanism. My Yamaha RD is also having the same problem and need for a replacement soon. I cant get this parts in Singapore any more. It's really great to read your post for this build up. Keep it up and keep on the posting the re-build till complete. I am looking forward for your guide for this build up.
Hi The bolt and nut I fitted for the gearchange mechanism are really tight - I struggled to back the nut off, plus the bolt had a ridge worn into it by the gearchange mech spring, so a quick search showed Fowlers had both parts in stock; And fitted; Much easier now to adjust the bolt. I also bought a new circlip for the large mainshaft bearing; I bought 4 new Yam gearbox bearings last year, ready for the rebuild; Dusty

Hi I have just looked through my Granby's receipts, and have found the drain plug washer. Part number is 94109 14000 - 14mm drain plug washer. I have just put that number into the Fowlers search engine and they have it in stock -59p. I think the Yam part was approx. £6 !! Hope that helps. Dusty

Great thread Dusty Wish it had been available when I was messing about with my motor. Also wish I'd known about the shift shaft bush back then...

Hi Yea, the shift bush is a worthwhile mod I think - makes a lot of sense, especially as Yamaha started doing it on the Ypvs engines. I will update the thread in the next day or so - been spending garage time on the Hybrid so the engine has sat dormant Glad it may be of some help. Dusty

Dusty Thats handy to know as my hybrid engine shifts very good and its standard YPVS selector and star. The 4LO can be difficult some times
