Keen to start stripping this down further now. Had a space issue in the shed - stuff all over the floor and no room to move, so I've built some more racking, tidied everything up, and managed to get the Lc down to the shed ready for the tear down; 20220925_153421 by dusty miller, on Flickr I was working in my local hospital last week, and saved this before it went in the skip; 20220925_153518 by dusty miller, on Flickr It was a patients records trolly - the top lifts up and the box beneath had files with patient info. Now it's all gone digital, this was skip bound ! Thought it would make a great engine building trolly !! Had to build the racking so this would slot in at the end. The 250 engine will come out of the frame and sit on top until I decide what to do with it. Hope to get some more time to take parts off this week Dusty

I'm planning on using the hydraulic clutch set up that was on the 350 engine in the Fzrd. It seemed to work well and wasn't heavy at the lever, and as this bike wont have too many non standard parts I thought it might add something a bit different. I've said before the Fzrd had some questionable mods to get everything to work, and the left side casing where the slave unit bolts was no exception 20220929_181212 by dusty miller, on Flickr That's been hacked about to get the slave bolted in place. I plan on using the side case off the 250 engine but will find a better way of mounting the slave. I measured the diameter of the circular housing on the casing - 115mm, so I went on ebay and found some ali discs of the correct size. 3mm thick, it ideally wants to be 4 or 5mm I think, but I will use this to mock up a better fixing before trying to source a final piece of ali; 20220929_181139 by dusty miller, on Flickr Also stripped a few more parts off today. Rad guard came off to reveal a really nice condition rad; 20220929_165849 by dusty miller, on Flickr And I took the oil pump cover off so I can drain the oil tank via the feed pipe. All looks good under the cover; 20220929_164623 by dusty miller, on Flickr Dusty

Yea, I agree, for a bike of it's age, a lot of the parts are in amazing condition. In the past, a lot of negatives have been aimed at European bikes, but if they are generally like this one, I wouldn't bother looking at a Uk Lc again ! I really am surprised at the lack of bodgery on it. Dusty

Thanks Chris, that's very kind The clutch slave unit is of unknown origin. The case was hacked about because the slave unit housing is too big for the original hole on the Lc casing, plus the slave was bolted straight onto the case with nuts on the inside. My plan is to space it away enough to mean I dont have to alter the case - I want to leave it standard in case I ever go back to a cable set up. A big bolt screws into the piston part of the slave unit, and it's that that acts upon the pushrod; 20220930_194702 by dusty miller, on Flickr A thicker disc means I could tap the mounting holes for the slave to mount on the disc which would be better. Will have a bit of faffing about to do, but hopefully it will work as it did on the Fzrd Dusty

Hi 500Rg, Thanks for the link. I'm not sure how well a fit that would be on the Lc side case ? Would like to see one fitted. Hi Pete, yea, I did the same conversion on a previous 400 I built; bike 26-2-09 005 by dusty miller, on Flickr I used a Yzf750 master cylinder at the bars, and I think, a Triumph slave cylinder. I cut off a 3rd mounting lug on the slave as it missed the custom made back plate - you need to orientate the slave so it sits directly over the pushrod, meaning the mounting hole was too near the edge to be any use. The bigger circular casting on the Lc doesn't give you any benefit as the clutch actuator is offset under the cover; 20220423_095910 by dusty miller, on Flickr I need to measure the depth of the casting around the piston. If I can find a billet disc of a certain depth, allied to the depth of the casting that has been hacked back, then the slave can sit flush above the pushrod without affecting the casing at all (if that makes sense) !! Stripdown continues, with an hour in the shed tonight. Engine out; 20221002_190432 by dusty miller, on Flickr There are now more parts on the shelf than on the bike !! 20221002_190451 by dusty miller, on Flickr Not much left to do now; 20221002_190457 by dusty miller, on Flickr The 350 engine that will go in this frame came with 250 carbs, albeit jetted up for the 350 engine with the Allspeeds and the pod filters. I bought some 4l0 01 carbs off ebay yesterday which are missing the slides and needles but otherwise complete. I'm keen to keep the carbs original this time. As the winter nights draw in, I plan on refurbing components as time allows, so the dirty parts will go from the shed, get sorted, and end up ready to fit in the garage (better lighting and centrally heated !!) Not much left now; 20221005_160902 by dusty miller, on Flickr I love how simple these bikes are to strip down. I also made another engine stand from some 3x2 CLS and a bit of ply, to sit the 250 motor on; 20221005_160615 by dusty miller, on Flickr I'm thinking of selling the motor, pipes and carbs on now as I cant see myself ever refitting them once the 350 is installed. Also planning on swapping the Lc forks/yokes for early Pv to beef up the front end a bit, but still have the option of Lc wheels, although Pv wheels are a favourite of mine. Got some decisions to make Dusty

An issue that needed resolving was the carbs. When I bought the Fzrd, the 350 engine was running with rejetted 250 carbs and foam pod filters. I didn't want to use these carbs on the rebuilt 350 engine as I know they are not ideal. My plan was for some 4l0 01 carbs with standard settings so that I could use them on the bike with the airbox, and hopefully be able to set it up without any hassle, even with the Allspeeds. I missed one scabby pair on ebay, but won these ones, albeit at an eye watering price ; 20221007_204205 by dusty miller, on Flickr Cleaned and rebuilt but missing slides, springs, needles and cable adjusters. I have used the carb tops and springs from the 250 pair as they are the same, and after some sage advice on here, the slides can be used too. Which left the needles to sort. I have a tray of carb parts, jets etc, and there are a few random needles in there. A look with a magnifying glass, and it turns out I have a nice pair of 5K1 needles for an Rd350Lc !! Dont know where I got them from and certainly never bought a pair, so that feels like a nice result !!; 20221007_204354 by dusty miller, on Flickr Dusty

That is a result. I was looking through a bunch of nos recently and found 2 5K1s in packets which was perfect for a set i was doing, I couldnt believe my luck but sadly not cheap... but what is these days?
Nice work Dusty. Defo getting there!

The 250 is completely stripped now, and I'm beginning to sort parts for powdercoating. Frame will get a clean before I take it to Jamie; 20221122_155937 by dusty miller, on Flickr I've ordered taper bearings for the head stock, so want to fit the bottom shell before coating. Some of the other parts that will get gloss black; 20221122_155943 by dusty miller, on Flickr There are other parts to add to that lot, like back brake lever, clock bracket, engine brackets etc. Footrest plates will get vapour blasted before I polish them up, and the left engine case will get Cerakoted to match the right hand side. I've ordered a Metmachex swingarm that will take the Ypvs rear wheel and brake set up, and that will slot straight into the Lc frame and work with the YSS Lc shock. Looking forward to getting started Dusty

I asked why didnt you choose to cerakote the triples instead of PC?

Post by dusty350 on Nov 23, 2022 8:31:55 GMT 1
Didn't see that post Jon ? Powder the yokes purely so they will match the frame exactly, along with the bars and headlight brackets, as they all sit very closely together. Plus it will be cheaper to powder all the parts together rather than Cerakote as that's a more expensive finish to apply. For engine related parts, it will always be Cerakote from now on, but I still like powdercoat for everything else. Not sure on wheels yet. I may get Jamie to vapour blast them, then polish the rims myself. I've got a new auto paint place near me so I'm going to investigate whether they can match the KR yellow, into a 2k rattle can so I can do inside the spoke area. This bike will be my main focus now. The Plan B bike is for a future project. I may cut out all the Kr1 suspension brackets on that frame, whilst waiting for parts for the Swiss build, and maybe make up some top hat bushes for the swingarm spindle as the holes in the frame have been opened out for the larger Kr1 spindle. I can then fit the Swiss standard parts onto that bike so I can move it around, but otherwise the 250 to 350 is my main focus now Dusty

Dropped my footrest hangers into Jamie today so he can vapour blast them. I will then give them a light polish. Plan to drop the frame and so other parts in to him next week hopefully. Also gathered some plastics together; 20221123_095312 by dusty miller, on Flickr The plan is to clean and refurb something each night, so it's ready to fit when the time comes. Lots of other parts just need a clean, so hopefully I can really move it forward when the frame comes back. Also popped into the auto paints place that has just opened near me. If you dont know the RAL or code for your paint, they can scan the side panel (or whatever you are trying to match), and then make up a 2k rattle can of the exact colour. Gloss/Matt/Satin too. May well consider this for the wheels nearer the time. Dusty
