I'm guessing that most of you on here owned an LC back in the 80's when you were a young lad? I certainly did, I have a few questions for you. 1. What's the main reason you own one now, surely it's not the only bike you own? 2. Do you actually ride it much or tend to look/polish it more, keeping it to sell for a profit in the future? 3. If you do ride it, how reliable can a 40 year old vehicle be? Do you find it really difficult to get parts?? 4. How do you find the 'riding experience' of this bike now you are middle aged? In one way I'd like to buy/own an LC again but I do wonder a) how much I'd actually use it, considering that I own a modern 1200cc bike and b) will my perception of ownership now be totally different considering that I'm not 19 any more.

Hi Welcome to the forum. Most members here actually use their bikes. Spose it's mainly nostalgia, as well as they are easy bikes to ride and maintain. A lot of peeps get rid of their big diesels to own an Lc/pv again, and lots have both ! Parts are readily available, including new pattern petrol tanks and bodywork. The only downside is the rising cost of parts on ebay - quite a few dealers now specialising in them and hiking the prices up. A decent Lc clockset sees £300 now, carbs £150, an Lc frame, Uk registered with paperwork can fetch £4-500 now !! It's an addictive hobby - owning an Lc or Pv, but you wont regret owning one again I'm sure Dusty

1 wanted one again for so long, have another bike but don't use that one 2 Ride it and Polish it, future value not a consideration 3 maintain them as you should and no reason why they cannot be reliable, parts are available from several sources 4 suits me just fine, not fast enough to kill me or lose my licence quickly
Will add a mate of mine has a 350lc and a newish speedtripple, the triumph hardly gets used now, he enjoys the lc so much more.

Also to add, lots of guys build hybrids nowadays with more modern suspension, tyres and brakes. If you build them right and ride them with some mechanical sympathy, and use good quality oils that are far better than what we were used to back in the day, there is no reason they cant be reliable and great fun to ride all these years later dusty

If I can afford to buy/run one alongside my current bike, I'd like one in pretty much standard factory form, just like the one, well actually two that I bought back in the eighties.

I have a lots of 2T's and the LC is my go to for a road bike, next one I chose is an RG500. In fact I ditched the only 4T I had as it was no fun compared to the LC. And that's it for me, if I don't enjoy riding it what's the point of owning it.
Polish it, thrash it, if it breaks fix it: Repeat

The more stock and original ones are usually the most expensive Dusty

:-) I have an Lc (3 actually ..2 in bits tho) it's modded with a tweaked Yvps engine. It didn't need it as I have the matching numbers original engine 'in a box' plus others. Ypvs is simply More power (even box stock) and it's a more robust engine. Also have a 600rr which I Bought New . LC is a bit lighter (not that many kgs tho) more tossable (skinny tyres;-) also a Helluvalot noisier though. With the LC I can thrill myself at ..Much... lower speeds. Akin to driving an old Mini cooper: Fun at "below go to jail" speeds. With the Honda a 1/2 turn twist of the wrist can/does give one Religion :-) Arguable More performance than a Sane man should have on tap. That said I won't take my LC 50 miles from home. Honda I've taken a 1000kms (so far) without a worry in the world. Many try to make their yamas into a 600rr lookalike (fill yer boots :-) IMO utterly pointless.. as a used 600rr is better than Any modded LC could ever be (spare me) for 1/2 the cost/effort. Will I get rid of Either ..NO!. Lotsa choices.. Pick one?

I got a new crank and loads of other bits last week and I can't wait to get this "old" girl on the road . I've been using a CG for the last two years . I'm not too worried whether it's shiny or not as long as nothing is rattling ( me included , lol ) , I'll be delighted if I can get it running right . . I'm glad I'm not trying to rebuild a 4 stroke ,5 valve , 4 cylinder motor .

And to add to Bare's point. Lots of guys modify their bikes now coz that's what they did back in the day. How many Lc's or Pv's did you see riding around bog stock when you originally owned one ? There is still a healthy market in non standard parts, and for me, modifying them is part and parcel of owning them. I don't think for one minute mine will be better than anything else, but I don't do it to compete with anyone else. It's each to their own . Having said that, my Rgv forks are stiffer than the Lc's 32mm originals, my box section arm is far stronger than the bendy original, the modern tyres make a huge difference, and modern brakes are miles better than originals. But if you want to keep it standard then that's great - there are plenty of happy, standard bike owners on here, and it's arguably harder to build a correct, original Lc than a hybrid nowadays. Do what makes you happy Dusty

Norbo runs this site, and has an online shop that you can access in the classifieds. Lots of standard and non standard parts available. Also Yamaha dealers can get an awful lot of original, nos parts if Norbo doesn't have them.

4 suits me just fine, not fast enough to kill me or lose my licence quickly That aspect is fine by me, I understand that. What about the distance/comfort aspect? I remember doing a motorway/A road trip of some 80 miles, feeling vibes through the pegs, numb bum etc. Now I'm middle aged, I'll probably be in pain within half that distance. Lol

I had an Xjr1300 for a time. The vibes through the pegs at 60mph were really uncomfortable. Never that bad on my Pv's !!

Extreme ?? On here ? Never , lol ! Back in the day, some of my mates use to take these engines to their limits, often ended blowing them up a short time later. Same situation with say the VW Golf mk1 if I remember,....... I'm not knocking that way of thinking, it's just not my thing.

Caution! Highly addictive. Mine will be more than fast enough when done plus still light enough to push around with a pair of dodgey shoulders. Also , check three times , buy once. Paul

I wouldn't class the LC as an Autobahn killer , lol , better off with a VFR or a Blackbird . I'll be mostly on B roads with mine , they've plenty of potholes that'd shake a CBR or R1 to pieces . The wheels on my bike are 30+yrs old and barely a ding on the rims . They're tough little bikes .

Paul I remember the draw of a good two stroke all them years ago, thing is, once I moved onto the larger powerful 4 stokes, I didn't go back. I'm just wondering if I'm looking through 'rose tinted' glasses at the moment, buying one after all this years, will it be for me??

That's true, Yamaha never designed that or any other 350cc bike to be a long distance bike I guess.

Where do you live ? There is bound to be a forum member near you and may let you have a go on their Lc ! And if you buy a good example and cant get on with it, wait till next summer and sell it for more than you paid for it (judging by the way prices are going !!) Dusty
