I bet your glad you pulled the float bowls off the carbs! Although you had a little mishap on the 2nd. It looks like you are sorted for parts, the only bodies I have spare are some 4L1 00 bodies I had for parts. Not wanting to make some more work you ought to have pulled the mixing tube out of the carb too, the part were the main jet screws into to make sure thats clean too, you get dry crap blocking up the holes. Make use of the cleaner you have it now. These are the mixer tubes I talk about , you have the top style , the other is from a Ledar carb . I cleaned mine some more after the pic was took. You will have to take care getting the tubes out , they come up after you have the main jet out , you may have to paly around with it a bit to get it loose. Rear shock looks good, I better get myself in gear , you will have your bike done in no time .

Any tips for getting them out?

Wow, you're properly charging ahead with this one! Really like what you've done replicating the green finish. Good job with the carbs too - stripping something like that can be a bit intimidating, but as you've found they're a lot simpler than they appear on paper, like a lot of stuff. Are you sorted for bits now? I have a solitary spare 250 carb in good nick if you still need anything. Good results from the cleaner. I was going to take my carbs somewhere and have them done, but think I'll get one of those instead. I'm intrigued - what 'magic' was worked on your lock set? Nice gloves btw Cheers - David

Nice gloves btw Cheers - David Thanks for your nice comments and kind offer David. Yes i'm a bit taken by the gloves myself! Thanks for the offer of a carb, but hopefully I'm sorted, the replacement should arrive any day. The Aldi cleaner was well worth the money, especially for someone like me who wants to take on something on a budget, and not sure if its something i want to repeat. There are some much better cleaners available at more money for those who do this regular. I've had my £20 of fun out of it already! You need to speak to Simon Wells about his 'magic trick' but for a small fee he takes your non-matching lock set and makes them match a single key and tidies them up for you. If you want his details PM me and I will pass them on. Cheers

Next job a bit of alloy polishing I think, starting with the foot hangers.... Before.... and 2 hours later after red then green scothbrite and some autochrome metal polish later... so one down, one to go. A couple of hours later they both in the bag! I'm starting to collect a few boxes now with finished bits. I'm starting to enjoy this!

Loose the latex gloves.. a bit of grime under the nails never really hurt anyone!
Very interesting build, good luck.
Are you stripping the engine also??

Thanks kostas. The gloves do it for me! ha ha. I will write on the engine shortly. I've got it part stripped and doing some work on it. I'm switching between a few elements at the moment and trying to give the thead a bit of continuity if possible! The cavalry arrived today in the form of a replacement carb outer for the one i bust in my rush to get to the pub. A lesson learned there! Thanks to John (soccersmyth) for that. Popped it straight in the Aldi special..... Hopefully I will get on to it at the weekend. Something for the weekend sir?

Attention turns to the exhausts..... First job is to get them off, remove the baffles, seal the ends and fill them with caustic soda to decoke them. I left them in the garage for week or so, then poured out the soda water, which was by then nice and brown. seems to have done its job. A bit of prep work... and then I snuck out of bed at 5am on morning to turn the utility room into a spray shop..... A few coats of Plasticote BBQ, once touch dry I took them into work and placed them into an industrial oven we have at the end of our paint track to cure them for a couple of hours. They wouldn't fit in my kitchen oven, however I have other plans for that! Was quite happy with the result. Another job ticked off. Next!

Attention turns back to the carb I broke. My replacement arrived thanks to Soccersmyth, thanks, so into the ultrasonic cleaner it went, but that went kapput before I could get it clean. I ordered another but as I had a few hours to spare i wanted to crack on so resorted to using the cleaning fluid with elbow power, toothbrush and cotton buds.... nearly there... Inspired by Farmboy's advice and thread I decided I needed to remove the emultion tubes and clean them up before re-assembling both carbs. However, I couldn't find any instruction for this in the Haynes manual, nothing on this thread nor on utube and to a novice it wasn't obvious how to get these out. As I'd broken one carb through heavy hands and rushing the previous week I didn't want a repeat, so a trip to the maestro was needed to find out the secret. Thanks Muttsnuts for sharing this with me. Truth be known he took them out for me, but showed me how at same time. Thanks Dave. An easy job with a bit of know how. So gave them a clean, and put them back, all by myself this time and no damage! The carbs are hopefully all complete, bagged and boxed waiting for a day in the distant future when bike re-assembly commences. If ever.

Muzz, thanks for your kind offer. I'm near York. The new ultrasonic works fine, its just that its errrr..... pink! what do you expect for £15 hey.
I've actually done most the bits that i'm planning to do for this build, but if I decide to do another I may be in touch.
My attention has now turned to the wheels, forks and engine. I will post on progress.

Shaun, you know I have several ultrasonic cleaners so your welcome to come and use them if you need to. Muzz is in Woodthorpe (or thereabouts), depends on how posh he wants to make his address !! Yeah, they will be a good number of us this year, will be nice to see everyone together, will be nice to see Muzz again, its only been about 33yrs since I last saw him !!! Also, next time you pop through Shaun, bring your exhausts with you, I want to check something for you as I spotted something in some of your photos, so would like to verify my initial thoughts Also, if yiu ened anything blasting remember I have the large blasting cabinet etc, ok I need to buy some more blast media etc, but its there and I don't charge much to bead blast parts etc And if your about to strip your front forks (I suspect another visit shortly then !), I have a few sets of genuine fork seal kits here which I'll sell you a set for cheap and of course I'll show you how to remove the seals once you have the forks apart !! - again, you might need to borrow some of my special tools to do that

Thanks harky, I'm enjoying it. Didn't realise how many facets to it and the wide range of skills and know-how needed. Its been a great journey so far. So thought I'd clean up the plastics... Found out what this device is for.... This is my workshop lol .... Once the plastics had been degreased and thoroughly cleaned I gave them a liberal spray of Autoglym Vinyl and Rubber Care spray, and left them to soak for 24 hours. Then a gentle rub over with yellow duster brings them up really nice..... I'm happy with those. Another small step in the right direction.

Now your turning into a pro LC resorter you have to turn your hand to many tasks. Thats part of the fun , I enjoy the work of the rebuild as much as the riding of the bike??? Not ridden my finished bike yet though as ints not done!
The palstics look to have come up real well , remember to put in the lower air box before you get to far in on the build . Its a real pain to get in later on the build.
Looking good.

Thought I had a leak on the radiator, so sealed it and filled it up with water and left it for a couple of days, and no seepage. Hope that's the case when its pressurised. The staining looks to be some oil I dropped on it during strip down. Overall looks in good condition. Blasted some air between the fins to clean out the debris. Cleaned the hoses, and the clips in the ultrasonic... and gave it a spray with some GT85 and its good to go... Another job ticked off.

Lets get these crank cases off then.... Not too bad that. Needed a damn good clean on the inside. Never took a picture but I'm sure you can imagine. The fixing screw at 12 o'clock on the casing has been broken inside. I wondered why the screw had been fixed into the casing using a sealant! And the other one.... No obvious problems this side. So, gave them a good old gunking and cleaning. A rub down with a bit of scotch brite, and then into my home made spray booth for a few good coats of PJ1. A couple of hours in the oven, seasoning occasionally... A bit of a buff up with autoglym, new seals, and then all ready to fit. I was a bit over zealous cooking the plastic infills though.... I never was much of a cook! The oven definitely needs cleaning now. Lol
