Most of the wiring is sorted now, just the headlight and DRL's to do but easy job for in the future. All still fairly untidy as I don't wrap looms until I know the work is complete. Go a bit bored with electrical stuff so decided to fit other things to have a break from it. Braided brake lines went on with new pads front and rear, new rear disc, clutch cable, finalised ignition coil mount, carbs went on and other stuff that I've likely forgotten about! I also spent many hours this week sorting out the panels to be painted and dropped them all off this afternoon. So far, she looks like this:

Well, as Aaron Lewis once sang, it's been a while. However, I have not been completely resting on my laurels, although to be fair, there has been a certain amount of that going on....
It was great to hear her fire up for the first time. I'm always full of trepidation at the first attempt to start a bike built with an electrical system combining an old and new system and then throw in a Zeel and Koso clocks just for good measure. However, I must have connected most of it together in some sort of order! I've now completed all the electrics and am happy to say that everything works, even down to the fuel gauge on the Koso. Lights are now all LED, the bulb type indicators having been swapped for planet friendly ones and the halogen H4 headlight bulb having gone the same way.
The most recent thing has been the biggest headache, as it was with MT1 and that is the cooling. The easiest thing to have done was to fit a pair of side mounted rads again, after all, that's all sorted now and works well, the big bonus with that is I could have put it all together in little more than a day. But easy is for wimps.......
I set out to explore again the possibility of a single central radiator and after about a fortnight, fully understood why MT1 didn't get one. Not to be outdone, a really helpful chap called Eric at Winner Racing in China said he could make me something based on one of his existing items but modified to my design. Anyway, long story short but he did just that and although I will need to make a couple of amendments to it, I think it's going to work, the only concern I have is that it's a reasonably small rad so I can only hope it will cope with keeping the PV motor at a reasonable temperature.
The next problem was trying to devise a solution for the top hose mounting at the cylinder head. The standard arrangement just won't work, too many problems that are impossible to resolve. So I set to trying to come up with an alternative and at this point have two possible solutions, but I'm not sure if either will work well enough, if at all. The first is an adaptation of the standard thermo housing though this is 50/50 at best of being suitable. The second is, I found the top section of the thermo housing from an FZR400 is the same diameter as that of the YPVS, just a slightly different design. Having got hold of a complete unit for little more than a tenner off eBay, I got a couple of the spacers from Norbo that usually allow for fitment of the lower temperature 'stat. My idea was to combine these by enlisting the help of a pal who is quite possibly the best welder I have ever known. With a bit of luck, he'll be able to look at it this weekend and hopefully join the bits together. The idea is, if he can mate the adapted FZR400 unit to an alloy spacer, I can then add another one or two, as required, to give me the clearance to fit a hose and to hopefully somehow get it to the top of the rad. It's early days, but this option does look promising except of course it won't be possible to run a 'stat, but then I wont be riding it in the Winter so it shouldn't be too much of an issue. If neither work, then it's back to the drawing board.
I'll pop some photos in the next post.

Currently, she mostly looks like this..... The rad Eric made for me. Cylinder head thermo housing joint, FZR400/spacer option Modified YPVS option

That's coming along really nicely, well done fella. You will get to love the challenges that specials throw up, always try to do the best job you can as I always come up with a better idea after the job is finished and end up revisiting or wishing I had..... keep up the good work. Is this a seller or keeper once complete?

I'll get used to it as time goes by I guess They're all keepers until you sell them......

Ive just noticed that you are running a two into one exhaust, are you going to stay with this setup. Be interested how she goes with this exhaust. Keep us posted. The 2 into 1 is just a lash-up to allow running of the engine without the neighbours contacting the council to get a noise abatement order! They sound great but severely curtail the power output. When MT1 had this pipe on, it made a staggering 27.5BHP, Mick Abbey made some pipes for it and immediately this went to 47BHP, further tinkering with the carburation, ignition timing and powervalve programming got it to 57.5BHP. So in short, no, it won't be staying.

Cheers for that urbantangleweed. I was considering buying a ktech 2 into 1 im not so sure now. Not looking for outright power just like the look and sound. I suppose the jury is still out on 2 into 1's on two strokes.

The K2tech 2 into 1 looks great, and no doubt sounds very good. If you don't need the 2 stroke scream, go for it, the bike will probably still do about 80mph. With the 2 into 1 we made that's on this, it's brisk up to about 7000rpm, but then it hits a wall.

Trouble with buying bikes owned by youngsters is they don't have the funds and/or possibly the knowledge to do routine maintenance. This MT125 shock linkage being a case in point. No problem though, a rebuild kit is on the way.

Had a full weekend on this, the weather was glorious so spent the whole time outside in the sunshine 🙂 Completely stripped out the back end and renewed all bearings and seals in the shock linkage and swingarm, then tidied everything up and refreshed it all with a tin of satin black. No play in it now. Many smaller jobs were also sorted, I even had time to pop the new decals on. She's off on holiday at the end of the week to spend some time with Mick Abbey who's going to make her a lovely set of pipes.
