A slight interlude in proceedings as Monday night is City & Guilds TIg 1 college night and then off away with work tomorrow for a few days.

You've passed. Tell 'em I said so. Alex I might just do that Alex! The lap weld and running a straight bead seem the most challenging. Destroying lanthanated tungsten I seem to be really good at!!

Today is a day to make fork tools. Kawasaki ZX6R forks need a service and I need to disassemble the stanchion from the radial caliper fork lower to Machine a recess for the calipers at the threads This is one of three tools I’ll be needing.

Fork compression tool. Cleverly I managed to chose some slightly higher carbon steel so a little bit harder to Machine, but it’ll last!!

Make that 4 tools. Need a female threaded M10 X 1.0 extension piece so I can retrieve this thread from above.

Always love making tools like this. I made a real lash up of a tool for KTM forks from an old chinese cheapie footrest plate and some screws to 'get them done today' from thing in the scrap bin... and I keep using it and saying i'll make a proper one lol Yours are much much nicer lol

This isn’t a straightforward job to disassemble the ZX6R forks without the right tools.

Fork lowers need heat to break the thread lock.

Fantastic service from K Tech. New guide bushes, slide bushes, travel indicators, 8N springs down from 9.3N standard and 5w fork oil.

The radial mounts need a small mod to locate the MT09 calipers.

Lovely job. Why have you taken the fork lowers off? And how did you hollow out that swinging arm spindle? Really long drill bit?

Lovely job. Why have you taken the fork lowers off? And how did you hollow out that swinging arm spindle? Really long drill bit? To make the job of machining the recesses for the calipers easier and to clean them thoroughly for painting. Clamping the fork lower in the milling machine vice with the leverage of the stanchion I don't think is a wise move either. Yes, with a long series HSS drill bit. When you say really long, I used to use a 10mm drill ~1m long for cross drilling waterways in injection mould tools so compared to that it's just a bit longer really than standard.

That’s the pair of them disassembled now. Will put the blast cabinet to action tomorrow and blast both of the fork lowers ready for painting. Some tidying of the stanchions and fork tubes on the lathe and then I’ll reassemble them.
