Well not much actual building has happened due to sub zero garage temperatures, so I've treated myself (and the bike..) to some early Christmas presents. A trip up to Norbo on Saturday to collect the Power Dynamo and the Koso gauge arrived this morning. One of the absolute pleasures building this hybrid is the never ending opportunity to spank more cash at it, but she's worth it!! Koso & Vape by KTM Marky, on Flickr

Oh & I now have these so I can complete the top end and have a spare set albeit 0.05mm difference between them for an alternative. The 0.8mm gaskets will give me 1.2mm Squish (calculated on the average of the 4 readings per cylinder) Base Gaskets by KTM Marky, on Flickr

I want to check the base gasket compression, so set my DTI up in the plug thread to see what affect the 25Nm torque has. This pic shows the datum point with the piston @ TDC & 10Nm on the head bolts: Base Gasket Compression Check 10Nm by KTM Marky, on Flickr This pic is with 25Nm and taken after about a minute, so will check over time what happens: Base Gasket Compression Check 25Nm by KTM Marky, on Flickr Just over 0.07mm initial compression, so looks like revised gasket thicknesses will be required.

It looks like it's settled at .11mm, so that gives me 1.1mm Squish or thereabouts at the moment.

This is a good academic test to see what causes gaskets to compress, but only half the story. If you fired that up they’d compress even more. That’s why you have to re-torque the head on a freshly build engine after running for a while as the gaskets compress and effectively reduce the torque. I’d be interested to know for this particular gasket material just how much they compress in total? Jon

Jon I also need to be mindful that I have blended in the crank cases to suit the Fahron re-sleeved & tuned 400cc barrels so I've less material on the sealing faces too! Anyone make some Copper gaskets?

Steering lock removed and welded an insert into the headstock. Thinking about machining a piece to accept the steering lock, but can’t decide if it’s worthwhile or not as I’ll never use it. Will paint the area for now as I’m contemplating a metal flake powder coat to the frame and black engine side cases at some point. Equally I may put a YPVS motor in so will just hold off for the time being.

Ahh...the old Golden Virginia Lapping Paste... Alex A remnant from my toolmaking days that resides in a tool box. I reckon that paste was last topped up c.1988/9!

I could probably just have bent some ally sheet to do the job of mounting the ignition coil for the Vape, but where’s the fun in that?
