WOW! thats a level of bodge we dont see too often. All points to a mock up from what was lying around over a weekend than someone who sourced things, sadly they didnt then do the job properly. Scary to have ridden that and seen it all after...

The loom connections could be time consuming !! Everything worked, but there were lots of horrible crimps and connectors everywhere. The bearing used as a spacer was pretty special, and then the fact the chain pulls were only touching on one side of the spindle ?? Rear sprocket is 46 teeth! The engine mounts are a whole new level. They are actually more complicated and difficult to use than if he had gone with a standard bolt and spacers. The frame rails are steel, so hope to get new ones made in either steel round bar/tube, or maybe square, but round could be easier. The side stand looks quality; 20220529_100658 by dusty miller, on Flickr The dog bones are really long, and look like 2 welded together for each side; 20220529_101605 by dusty miller, on Flickr I think I will get them re enforced - looking at the quality of the welding on the bike, I wouldn't trust them as they are Hopefully all the bodges are now evident, although the headstock area is the only part I haven't yet stripped. I wont rule out more bodgery !! Dusty

This would be funny, if it wasnt so sad.
The guy professed to being some kind of 'race team'... hmm, i can see now he was more of a cheap Walter Mitty.

Yea, B M R Racing !! The positives outweigh the negatives only because it was always gonna get stripped down. If it had been bought to ride straight off, I feel there could have been some serious problems. The bonus is the frame and swingarm are in good condition so with the right work I think I can improve it and hopefully make a safer/better job of it. I agree, it feels like a weekend build with whatever was in the garage at the time. I think a new engine cradle would transform the look of the engine in the frame Dusty

Today I saved my chain pulls ! The washers with the 17mm id that had been welded on the inner faces need to come off for the correct 20mm spindle to pass through them. I was going to dremel through the welds, but would have been there forever, so I ground back the washers where I could to weaken the welds, then opened a gap between the washer and the chain pull, and levered the washer away; 20220529_172910 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20220529_172951 by dusty miller, on Flickr I used my cheapo Aldi bench grinder/sander, and it worked a treat - reducing the outer diameter of the washer and grinding back the welds; 20220529_174924 by dusty miller, on Flickr Pleased to have saved them as I didn't want to have to buy some more; 20220529_193708 by dusty miller, on Flickr Dusty

Haha, cheers Mark. There is a fair bit of "unbodging" to do, so I might be good at it by the time I finish !!

Thanks to the loan of some Rgv parts by Mouse (thanks again mate ), I've managed to mock up the rear wheel in the swingarm. I bought a sprocket hub and spacer on ebay, plus a Vj21 rear wheel spindle; 20220601_191536 by dusty miller, on Flickr I already had the 2 wheel spacers left over from a previous project where I had swapped them out for alloy spacers. Mouse lent me a caliper carrier from a VJ22, plus a caliper so I had all the parts to fit the wheel to the swingarm - I needed to prove the 21 wheel would work in the 22 arm with the brake/disc mish mash. Seems it does ; 20220601_190834 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20220601_190850 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20220601_190855 by dusty miller, on Flickr For future reference, a Vj21 spindle is slightly longer than a 22; 20220601_191617 by dusty miller, on Flickr So that confirms the wheel will get used in the banana arm. I'm missing the spindle nut and the internal spacer between the wheel bearings, plus cush drive rubbers too, so more parts to find. Still looking at options for a matching 3 spoke front end. Gsx/Gsf/Rf 600 are favourites at the mo. Dusty

Good work Dusty. I think the VJ21 spindle is longer as the swinger is a box section. If you got stuck you could thread it down and chop the end off which is useful.
The parts you need are all still available from Suzuki i think?

Hi Jon, Correct, the Vj21 is a box arm whereas the 22 is less chunky at the back. I can either get it reduced in length or space it for the nut - we will see (dependant on cost !) I'm keen not to throw loads of money at this bike as I think it will never recoup close to what it could cost to build, what with it being very much a "marmite" bike, but having said that, whatever gets done has to be right and at least not be bodged !! And yes, you can still get the spacer tube and nut - the nut is around 45 quid new I keep imagining how the engine would look in the frame with new cradle rails, and I think that would make the biggest difference to the look of the bike. I'm away for a few days from tomorrow, but when I get back my priority will be seeing the engineering guys about some frame mods, namely new cradle, filling in the holes in the main spars, sorting those dog bones and welding in a front tie bar mount. Dusty, result that it all fits, you can have that spindle nut if you want it?

Sounds good Dusty but wow that nut is crazy money. I never knew... eeek. Talking of eeeks... seems our very own Mouse came to the rescue! BTW, cutting more thread and chopping the end off will be easy if you can find someone with that die. Ive done this before on custom builds.

Cheers Mouse, I'll give you a call Yea, crazy money for a nut ! The cush rubbers are over 14 quid each - there are 6 of them Bought them for the 400 hybrid build as I couldn't find any on ebay. Crazy prices Dusty

Hmm, might be worth shopping further than the UKs splendid shores and fishing rights, as Steve says the prices in Japan are much keener.
Not sure on the model diffs but megazip list the VJ22 for US$9.99 each. Sure, imports cost will not help but probably still not £14 each... cms is 9 euro etc. I'd save up the list and buy a few things that save you money of course, multiple post costs will kill any savings etc.
