Hi mate looking to respray some plastics on my lc2 rad gaurd chain gaurd could you recommend primer and satin black thanks Michael Hi Michael Always a bit hit and miss painting plastics. As with all good paint jobs the effort is always in the preparation. You will probably find that by giving the plastics a right good clean with degreaser and detergent, they come up quite nice. There are loads of products in the car accessory shops for bringing black bumpers up like new. I replaced my rad guard with a new one as the old one was totally fooked. Cracked and bits missing. The chain guard got the cillit bang treatment. When painting my clocks though I used Simoniz acrylic primer for plastic and the same brand of satin black. Just be aware if you paint any flexible plastic surface it will probably crack over time. If you do go down the paint route, any acrylic auto paint for plastic should suffice. John

Thanks guys Yes the finish line is in sight now but I still have a few little jobs to do before I can get her MOTd and on the road. Seeing as the weather has brightened up a bit and I can get the bike out of the shed I am managing to get a few things done and getting me in the zone again. I really need to declutter the garage and the shed so I can at least work on the bike under cover rather than wait for a dry day Today I loosely fitted the rest of the bodywork on the bike for a preview of how the finished article will look seeing as it has been stashed in boxes since it came back from the painter. Well pleased with how things are turning out both with the lines of the bike and colour. Got a question though on the routing of the loom under the bottom yoke and past the fairing into the headlight. There is not a lot of space and the loom is quite fat and I am having a bit of trouble fixing the fairing at the bottom pin. If anyone can steer me in the right direction on the correct route for the loom that would be magic. Meantime I am about to search through a few rebuild threads to see if I can shed a bit of light on the subject John You’ve gotta love that colour scheme 👌😍

Thanks Matt Yeah I do like this colour scheme as although a standard job, it is a wee bit different for the UK I have to admit though, I got the idea from Mouse's hybrid so could technically qualify for a bit of intellectual property theft . Not been able to get it out for an MOT due to the lockdown, but as soon as this is lifted......... John

The finish is in sight John. I echo Matts comments, you have a gorgeous looking bike, love the paintwork. The bike would grace any motorbike dealers showroom window.
Well done- top draw restoration.
Cheers, Mark

Cheers, Mark Thank you Mark, that is a real compliment coming from a top special builder like yourself. Was never intended to be a full on resto, I just wanted to build a tidy bike from the bits I inherited from my brother. I just bolted a lot of new and old parts together which is a lot easier than having to make most of the parts from scratch, like you are having to do. I should really make a list of everything I had to find for this and all the forum members who helped me along the way. It will be a looooong list indeed 😀

Beautiful bike you have there. If mine ends up looking half as good I'll be really pleased. Regarding the loom routing at the front, (and I'm not saying mine is correct!), I've routed my loom under the bottom yoke, but to the other side of the front brake union... that's how I interpreted the routing diagram, from the FSM (item 34) below.

Thanks darboots, I am more than happy with how things turned out and I am sure your will turn out spot on. Slow and steady does it. Thanks for the diagram too, I eventually sussed out the route for the loom and is sitting nice and tidy now. A real learning curve assembling something which you never took apart in the first place. Cannot thank the troops on here enough for their help and advice throughout. Top team 👍

I've neglected this thread for a while as been busy with other much less important stuff but back on it again Getting the cases ready for building up I had a go at fitting the new clutch arm bearing. Using the old drawbolt with a couple of heavy washers and it went in no bother Sat the old bearing casing next to the new one for the pic as it was a swine to get out. Tried every suggested method by the team on the forum but ended up going down my local engineer shop and getting it with a proper puller. Need to get one of those even though I don't need one at the moment (sound familiar?) Motivated with the drawbolt method, had a go at the gearshaft bush Happy with that! Cases now ready for the heavy bits inside, game on can I ask HOW you removed the roller clutch bearing ? I need mine removed as it is simply had it ZiG

I assume you mean the bearing in the top case for the clutch arm, It was an absolute pig to get out. I tried using every tool I had in my toolbox plus had a go using different rawl (anchor) bolts but gave up before I burst something. I ended up taking it to my local engineer who used a bearing puller and he eventually got the thing out. Even he said it was in really tight. The only thing I didn't try was heat on the casing as I had not long painted the top case and did not want to mess it up. It would appear to be a common consensus on the forum that this is a tricky job and only attempt it if your bearing is totally goosed. Be aware Also that some of the pattern bearings available on the market are poorly made and not quite the same size as OEM (just too big) and you will have a real bother getting it to fit. Best use genuine Yam replacement Best of luck and let us know how you get on.

I was gonna suggest warming the case then using a blind bearing puller It worked for me 👍

I pulled the switch gear apart to give them a tidy up as they were looking a bit rough. I used a bit of JB Weld to fill in the deep scratches and once cured sanded flat with a bit of wet and dry. Then a couple of coats of PJ1 satin black baked in the oven at 200 for 30 minutes and allowed to cool (got caught up in a bake off moment lol) Put it all back together and some new decals from Norbo and we are good to go (almost as I still need to sort out a couple of connector blocks) John

Hi mate just looking at your switch gear respray how did you put your norbos stickers on ? Self adhesive decals so just peel off the backing paper and place where they are meant to fit. Take care though as they are very sticky and you want to get them positioned correctly first time. Wouldn’t fancy having to peel them back off and re align if you make an 4rse of it. I have got one of those magnifying glass/lamps and used tweezers to position them carefully. They do set off the freshly painted switches nicely. John

Great thread his, thanks. Just re-read from start as inspiration for my own build. Some great points made and I will be referencing this again over the next few months during my own 31k build. I had already decided to go white/blue, and re-reading your thread has convinced me even more. Which painter did you use?
