Looking good John Be back together in no time Dusty Cheers Dusty Once the engine is in and wired up I will grind to a halt for a while as I need to sort out the bodywork and get it painted. Plus I want to get a set of pipes from Mutts and some dyno time so it may slow down, or conversely move quite quick. Just depends on time! I am helping a mate with his 1929 101 Indian Scout just now so busy busy with the spanners these days. He is the same guy with the Harley sportster I posted in the Diesel section (he loves is v twins lol) I'll keep posting progress as we go. John

Blimey, that's a nice, clean, work area. Stef. It is just an illusion Stef I have a single car garage with 3 bikes, my Laverda, Commando and LC. I also have dexon shelving full of tins of paint, boxes of sh*t, bleach, washing powder, toilet rolls, bulk tins of beans/tomatoes etc and anything else the Mrs wants out of the house. The garage also holds the tumble dryer plus my compressor, press drill, welding gear, bench grinder tool boxes and all the parts slowly going on to the power valve which lives in the hut outside. I have one clear space on my work bench about 2ft x 3ft where the motor got built and now sits. When it goes into the frame, the clutter will take over and normal service will resume hahaha ATB John

I pulled the switch gear apart to give them a tidy up as they were looking a bit rough. I used a bit of JB Weld to fill in the deep scratches and once cured sanded flat with a bit of wet and dry. Then a couple of coats of PJ1 satin black baked in the oven at 200 for 30 minutes and allowed to cool (got caught up in a bake off moment lol) Put it all back together and some new decals from Norbo and we are good to go (almost as I still need to sort out a couple of connector blocks) John

Great work on the switchgear John It's those details that make for a really great looking build, and they can be fiddly to get right. Dusty

Things have ground to a halt for the moment progress wise but still ticking away in the background. Bodywork is away for paint and a few more parts on order so should hopefully get moving again soon. Got a few more bits back from the platers so can start assembling some odds n ends which have been lying about for too long

Time for the braking system to get a tidy up. First thing was to pull everything apart and examine what is worth refurbing and what is for the bin. Two time serts were needed for the threaded bosses on the rear caliper but other than that, everything else looked ok so new seals were ordered up and prep for painting began. Spent ages cleaning everything up especially the grooves in the caliper halves where the seals sit. Forgot to take close up pics but they were well furred up inside. Probably never been apart since leaving the factory but all clean and shiny now. everything was given a couple of coats of heat resistant satin black and baked in the oven to cure it properly. Turned out nice. Then it was reassembly. Pistons polished up and new seals fitted and it was time to button everything up with the newly replated bolts and pins. Just need to get them back on the bike now with some new pads and hoses.

Nice, thats my next task on my F1 bitsa, not looking forward to getting the pistons out ! I just connected each caliper up to the master cylinder one at a time and pumped the pistons out until they were almost fully extended. Then when the calipers were split it was quite easy to pull them out completely by hand though a couple needed a little bit of effort. A bit of old inner tube cut up gave a bit of grip and protection to the surface of the pistons and I used a pair of grips to gently pull and twist them free. Plenty of paper towels handy as this was quite messy and latex rubber gloves as brake fluid is not very good for your skin

Sunshine again today so dragged the rolling chassis out and bolted a few more bits together First order of the day, get the motor back in Not forgetting the tie bars underneath. I didn't realise they would only fit one way and it took a couple of goes and a bit of head scratching however got there eventually Next was the refurbished rear master cylinder and re plated brake pedal. Not really sure whether I like the std olive green so it might be back off for a bit of black paint Then the rebuilt rear caliper with new brake hose from Norbo. Like most I believe I should have shares in his business now lol. Two freshly painted horns for the front and the front master cylinder so I can get the front brakes on as well. I have been using stainless fasteners wherever I can but replated as many standard original fasteners that had not been chewed up over the years as well as the ones with the 1.25 pitch thread. A couple of radiator hoses and the back light fitted and it was time to tidy up. Got a few things to change on the loom for the ignitech, and a bit of damage to sort on the clocks and they will be going on next, well after the front brakes so more progress hopefully soon. Might even get this finished in time for winter!

Never understood the olive green colour. Why? On a basically black bike it looks all wrong. Bike moving apace now though and looking good!

Raked through the box of redundant parts and found a decent rear brake pedal from a later model and ditched the green original. I am much happier with how this one looks compared to a pristine olive job. Agree with Alex and baffled as to why Yamaha thought the use of olive drab was a good choice on a mostly black (or red) framed bike. Just need to refit the footrest hanger now A few weeks ago I dropped the bodywork off at the painters. It was a sorry state of mixed and mis matched panels with about 8 layers of different coloured and poorly applied paint, and some damage to the tank as well, but all quite solid. Delighted when I got a call this morning to say they were finished so nipped over and picked this lot up I asked the painter if he could paint the front mudguard to match the decals as I didn't like the look of just a plain white one. I am well pleased with how it turned out and a nice match for Norbo's decals. Working outside I just wish this effin' rain would lighten up so as I can finish this thing.

Yeah, the 'Marlboro' colour scheme was looking a little worse for wear but I am sure the previous owner of those panels was well chuffed with the "look" Went for the blue colour after seeing Mouse's hybrid special a while back. It is nice and bright and slightly less common than the usual LC2 colours. Just waiting on a set of pipes from Mutts now and I will have everything to finish (maybe ) John

Hi John That's looking fantastic mate The blue/white is such a lovely scheme - probably the nicest you can do on an early Pv in my opinion Your painter looks to have done a stunning job The rest of the bike is looking ace too. Not far off now Dusty

Looking forward to more progress.

Cheers guys and yes I am very pleased with how things are now turning out plus it is a real compliment coming from folks like yourselves who have turned out some exceptional bikes. I would have loved to employ the services of Mr Cordwell to sort my paint but costs have been getting out of order with this "cheap" rebuild project so I used a local lad who has done a really nice job on it. He has been painting race bikes for years so knows his stuff. Those are Norbo's decals as well and he matched them perfectly on the front mudguard. Absolutely no chance of touching Yogi's title Mark as this is a long winded, two steps forward one back kinda job but we will get there soon hopefully. Thanks for the offer of the brake pipe clamps Dusty, I will pm you later in the week if that is ok? I am now hoping that things will pick up pace a bit and get some more pics up soon John

Been a slow week this week but managed a little progress New seals arrived for the caliper halves (or is it halfs?) so they went back together. A bit of red rubber grease to hold in place first and careful placing of the bolts and top half Then with a little loctite on the bolts torqued to 30Nm (22 ft/lbs) again the only reference I had was the brembo settings on BMW GS split calipers Job finished Pads and pins back in and back on the bike. Bled up to a nice firm lever and secured with a proper pair of pipe clamps this time thanks to Dusty. Cheers buddy the are a perfect fit and 100% improvement over those shi*ty Shambits efforts. Best news this week though was the pipe fairy dropped off a special delivery from the Mutts fella. Cannot wait to get them fitted. Big question now is, do I polish them or leave as is? Mmmmm decisions, decisions. John

Looking great John Pipes look lovely. I gave mine alight polish - I never gone too shiny on any bike parts as they can then need constant upkeep. Depends if you want to keep the weld colouring, as even a light polish will remove it. Some like that feature, others aren't bothered. I've got some pics of before and after polishing somewhere if you want to see Dusty

Bloody hell those pipes are truly the Mutts Nuts lol. Alex Thanks Alex and yes they truly are the dogs...... I pondered long enough before going for them and I am glad I did. I have a rough set of F2 pipes which I was going to tart up and fit but not any more. Plus these pipes are a fraction of the weight too so I can go up a couple of trouser sizes over the winter to balance things out. I still have a few more things to do before I fit them but nearly there now John

I dont think I will polish them after all for the same reasons as you say as I hate to keep polishing shiny things on a bike. The "industrial" look will stay but the ally end cans will probably succumb. As said to Alex I have a few more things to do before they get fitted but it wont be long. Got a bit of work on just now so not getting to work on the bike until evening times but small steps are definitely paying off and the brake pipe clamps worked a treat as well. Thanks again mucker.
