Is Mark going to be on Junk and Disorderly next? Alex Alex, Knowing Markโs level of attention to detail, I canโt see him lowering himself to some of the bodgery of Henry and Co !! ๐.

Thanks Dusty, Alex, Jonw and Bezzer Next stage of the throttle cable guides is to make the part that goes through the carb top. I decided to make these out of brass, and turned a couple out on my lathe SDC12267 I then drill a hole in some cement board (used in the tiling industry), and assemble the parts SDC12268 I then heat using a plumbers torch using Mapp gas, and silver solder. This gives a super strong joint SDC12269 I then polish everything up SDC12270 I can now finish the oil pump lines and fit the carbs. The oil lines are a bit of a squeeze, but I'm happy with the routing and look SDC12271 Lastly, remember the clutch cable brackets, there are 3 in total. This is the top one, that's hard to photograph, but here goes SDC12272 So with the bike a few weeks from being finished, I get an Email from the Stafford show, that my entry "has been declined" This means, I can't take the bike to Stafford (although I'm going on Saturday as my accommodation is booked). I've still got a few things to do, but it's plain sailing from here. I'll post up pics of the finished bike in a few weeks time Cheers, Mark

Stafford have missed a trick there mate. Be good to catch up with you on the Saturday anyway though And, as always, stellar work on some fiddly components Dusty

That is ridiculous re: Stafford, what a bloody shame, it could/would possibly win 'best in show'!

How can it be declined when there are some right sheds on stands, the public will miss out on this definitely

Well that's a shame. Do they actually understand what this bike is? I can't believe they would turn it/you down if they understood it fully and the work that's gone into it

How can a build of this quality and interest not get an entry, WTF are they thinking ๐คฆโโ๏ธVisitors to the October show go for the chance to look at & admire the best builds out there. Filling the halls with very shiny totally stock bikes is all well and good but surely the October one is for bikes exactly like Mark's. I mean the clue's in the f*cking name isn't it ? Hopefully someone on the organising side of the Classic Motorcycle Mechanics Show who knows what they're looking at rather than some Admin bod will find it a place for Mark after all. I've made my thoughts known to organisers, maybe you could too - Email them here ๐

That sucks, would be undoubted one of the stars of the show. Never mind their loss and other peoples which is a shame. Enjoy the show anyway and we will all look forward to the next couple of weeks when it will be show time for the first start of it.

WOW, thanks Dusty, Mouse, stumpy, steve63, cbm and Denzil, your reaction has brought a lump to my throat. I just assumed that Norbo would have a stand and hoped he'd be happy for me to show the bike (I don't feel any entitlement). Norbo has won best stand in the show not that long ago. But whatever the mix up, Norbo won't have a stand at Stafford this year. I put the private entry in as soon as I found out, after putting everything on the bike (paintset, exhausts and radiator), took a photo and sent in the application. The reply was from Nicola Brooks "it is with regret that we must decline your offer of displaying Yamaha RD700 4 cylinder at the show". Now, I don't know, they might be full up (it is getting close to the show), they might not want specials, or have enough Yamaha's. The bike is finished now, I think I have 4 posts before posting the finished bike. I think it's more detailed and better finished than the triple- it is a monster . I am sorry chaps, that the bike won't be there. But I will be there on Saturday, so hope to see a few of you there. Cheers, Mark

That's a pity about Stafford. I like how you made the two throttle bends and I didn't know you could solder stainless steel. I will copy this in future builds.

That's a pity about Stafford. I like how you made the two throttle bends and I didn't know you could solder stainless steel. I will copy this in future builds. We used to use silver solder whenever we were joining dissimilar metals. Mainly on refrigeration coils. For instance If we were joining a brass fitting to the copper coil tubes or the compressor steel inlets/outlets to brass valves etc. Just be careful not to get it too hot, you don't want it red and you will need some flux. The rods aren't cheap (someones selling a single 200mm rod and flux for ยฃ7.50 on Ebay) but you wouldn't think so from the amount of them I used to find on the floor and in bins at work and ours were 500mm. Not a problem to me though. That's why I now have a few in my tool box at home . I never got myself any flux though. Bit of an oversite.

Back in the day the coppersmiths in Rosyth Dockyard used to keep all their silver solder stubs and sell them for good money then the Berlin wall came down and suddenly they were not worth keeping as the market was swamped from the eastern block If you can collect your stubs and sell them for money that you get to keep I bet the stubs got pretty long.........like the full length of the rod long sometimes . We were taught to stick ours down towards it's end, just as your fingers were starting to burn, then tack the new one to it. There was no waste then. We were even taught to do it with mild steel welding rod and they were literally ten a penny. A guy I worked with was told off by his boss for wasting loads of welding rod, leaving too long a stub, so he took all the stubs he could find, stiched them together and created one giant welding rod that stretched across the workshop. He was sent home and was eventually sacked months later. He came to work for us and was sacked from there as well unsurprisingly.

Back to the build. Now the carbs are in position, I can finish the throttle cable Once I measured the lengths of the out cable, I used a mini diamond disc to cut the cables SDC12273I then install the inner cable, adjust, mark and cut the the inner cable SDC12275 SDC12274 The cable ends have to be reamed out using a small broach to ensure a close fit SDC12276 Back to boring brackets I needed to make a throttle cable bracket to hold the cable splitter in position. Also a bracket for the oil pump cable. As this is a standard Yamaha oil pump cable section, it has to stretch an extra 100mm (the extra width of the engine for that side). I was concerned the cable outer spring would rub on the cylinder base SDC12282 Then painted SDC12283 And both fitted SDC12284 SDC12285 Lastly, I put the exhausts on SDC12286 SDC12287 This leaves, the rad, fuel tank, fuel taps, fuel lines, and a bit of plumbing to do. Cheers, Mark

Those pipes look great Can't wait to hear them. I was always very impatient at this stage and would rush to get some kind of noise out of a bike even with no pipes on, some petrol in the carbs and no water and even if it was 2am Hopefully I've grown out of it I've found five throttle cables in the garage all with at least one thing wrong with each. Your cable building has inspired me to have a go at refurbishing them rather than throwing them away. I have bought a brand new Yamaha one but at over ยฃ100 I think it's worth having a go otherwise I may as well have stuck them in the bin in 1987 .
