Hi guys Little more on this project, collected the tank and frame from the blasters. The frame had a few pin holes and a broken bolt that needed to be sorted so out came my TIG welder this morning and now both problems are sorted. The tank hasn't shown anymore holes so 2 repairs and hopefully it can be given to the painters. The plan is to drop the frame of to the powder coaters on Monday, hopefully the wheels will be back middle of next week. Tomorrows club evening will involve stripping the RGV usd forks ready for cleaning ect. I like teaching the kids about forks, i show them and explain everything on one leg, then they have the second one to try themselves.

Well i have been running the club for 2 previous school years, this is the 3 school year.
The first year the club restored a mk1 DT125LC and that was completed and i rode it for it MOT.
Last school year the bike didn't get finished as parts became an issue but that's soon to be MOT as I have finally found the parts.
This year the club has restored a Honda Melody Mini scooter witch hopefully will be MOT in 2 weeks.
All the projects live in my clean area of the workshop (man cave) lol, we take them to local shows to try and raise awareness of the club. So once this RZ250RR is done that will be added to the collection.

A little update, last night we got the bottom yoke modified. Moved the lock stops and made some bosses for the lower headlight bracket to mount on. Also we fixed the Sidestand hole as it had gone oval, drilled it out to 18mm and made a boss with a 12mm hole, welded it flush. So the frame is gonna head to powder coaters on monday morning.

Well yesterday was a mixed day of emotions, dropped the frame of at the powder coaters and asked for it to be coated in Red RAL 3020. Hopefully it should be a nice bright red. So that was a good start, then it kinda went down hill. We started to work on the tank. Loads of rot. Loads of repairs and still have a leak, now gonna have to use a tank sealer. Didnt want to go that route but needs must. Around 11pm last night it turned around and we have got a plan for the future, we are now on the look out for another tank, if its got holes/rot in the bottom it doesn't matter as we are gonna make a new stainless steel tank and use the original tank as a cover, so we will ve cutting the bottom out and using the outer skin.

Your repairs look good, so why not finish repairing it?

The one side has held really well, the side with the fuel tap is like a siv, the hole started as per the picture and now its along level with the tap area,
The more we repair the more we find problems, its so thin as soon as you arch up it blows holes, its a loosing battle.
I have a feeling that the tank sealer will help but not heard good things about it

Like I say i normally do one leg then let the kids do the other one. As for the welding we was TIG, much nicer welding, we have a mig welder but it hardly ever gets used,

Well had a not so good message this morning from the painter, he has had his hours reduced and looks like he might be loosing his job.
So now the club bike is in trouble as it might not be able to be painted unless i can find another painter.
Really gutted for the painter as he is a really nice bloke and has helped out the club loads. His son is one of the most dedicated kids at the club, been regular for 2.5 years only missed a few evenings. Bad things always seem to be happen to good people

Well some more progress. I have spoken to a seat company that is well know around this area and he is gonna rebuild and make good the seat that came on the bike. Its a Giuliari spa seat gonna keep the red and white theme as it came with. I have also been going at the petrol tank again, i have had a go at silver soldering/ LED filling and the tank now seems to be dry, i have only tested it with soapy water and fixed leak after leak until no more leaks. I need to test it with petrol tomorrow and if its dry i can give it to the painter as he is back on track, he did say middle of march for the paint work.

I know what you mean about not wanting a tank liner. However there are some good brands out there, and more importantly some have said if done properly they are no problem.
I'm fairly sure there's a liner in one of my YPVS tanks, and that seems good. No leaks and no flaking bits.

Hi guys i have been busy collecting a big kit of parts ready for monday evening and the beginning of the rebuild, today i collected the top yoke and fork tubes that have been polished. I now have a big pile of bit. Frame ready to go. Forks ready to be built. New bushes, oil seals and dust seals. Yokes with new bearings and a spacer, top bearing cover and castle nut from norbo. Handle bars. Wheels,Tubes, rim tape, cush drive rubbers (tdr250 ones) still Need tyres. New oil bottle, rear mudguard, header tank, alloy radiator. Maybe some other odds and sods but i cant think. Hopefully come Monday evening the bike should look a bit morr like a bike and less like a piles of bits. Lol. Need to get the swinging arm blasted and coated and then sort out bearings and bushes ect. I am waiting on a box of bits to come back, i sent the carbs, footrest hangers and a few other bits to be vapour blasted a good few weeks ago and there due any day. More updates as and when they happen.

Do you need some gaskets for the carb float bowls, or are you getting refurb kits?

Do you need some gaskets for the carb float bowls, or are you getting refurb kits? To be honest i haven't seen inside the carbs, they got taken of and sent straight out to be blasted, i have an ultrasonic cleaner for the insides, Will let you know when they are back. 👍

Looking good, lots to get on with there. Who are you using locally for the various bits, I'm not too far away, and don't know of many other companies, other than a few powdercoaters, (PM me details if you like)

Hi everyone tonight the club started to rebuild the yamaha rz, first up was cleaning and rebuilding the front fork, new bushes, oil seals, dust seals and oil. Then the frame was treated to new headrace bearings on the freshly powder coated bottom yoke. New S/S bearing cover and castle nut from norbo. Then the forks where slipped into place to keep them safe. There was some more progress on taking the engine apart, the barrels where removed and they are looking in good condition, now marks or groves, the piston rings are shiny so doesn't seem to have been used much since its last rebore.

Well it was a good club last night, we had a new member joined, so that now 8 kids. Anyway lots got done. More of the rz engine was stripped, just need the cases splitting now. Parts started being fitted onto the frame. Reall proud of how the kids are progressing, some of them really have the bike bug and seem to be gaining a genuine passion for motorbikes. Anyway more updates when they happen

A few more updates on the clubs bike, my brother in law came over and he made up some stainless steel top mounts for the headlight bracket on the Rgv forks. Need to pull them of and give them a polish. Also he welded on some swinging arm bobbin mounts. I have also Kreem-ed the petrol tank to make sure there isnt any holes left, non has leaked out so i guess i did manage to seal it with the welding and the Led soldering i done but bettet tonbe safe then sorry. Let me know what you think its always good to get feedback and advice. Thanks guys
