Hi everyone i run a youth club teaching local kids how to fix motorbikes and we are just starting a new project, 1984 RZ250RR, we normally do complete restorations but this time the kids prefer a slightly different look. We are aiming for something like this but with laced wheels and USD forks better brakes. This is how the bike started, i have owned this bike for the last 8 or 9 years. After this evenings club of 2 hours this is how the bike sits now As you can see they cracked on.

The past projects the club has done are a Mk1 1982 DT125LC As i got it,stood in a field for 15 odd years. How it is now (Bad picture) MK2 1985 DT125LC Got it in bits loads missing Not quite finished as can't find nos front mudguard. 1984 HONDA MELODY MINI This is the one the club is doing now. Just the engine to rebuild. My wife and i pay for everything from the bikes to the bits, we ask for £2.00 per kid per evening. We run on a Thursday evening from 7-9 only during school term times, so about 38 weeks.

Wow thats really generous Arrow, i need to check the pump as its a 29L 250 bottom end, but has 31k 350 barrels so not sure what pump it is running. How do i tell the difference? Is there an easy way

See if there is any paint around the top casting, or the lower outer of the four case screws. Red or yellow, then report back.

Sorted these for you.... :-) Base gaskets are 0.5mm thick. Standard are 0.6mm, but squish is usually way big, so should help a little. Another little job to show the youths - how to measure the squish :-)

Well i managed to get outside to my workshop for a little bit today, i had some outstanding jobs that needed to be done but not with the kids walking around. So i have now cut all the spokes from the rims ready tonbe sent of ( health and safety, plus letting kids loose with a grinder is not my idea of fun). so it will be TDR 250 hubs with the alloy rims from an XT125. Both 17" rims. 100-17 front and 130-17 rear.

Well today i packed up the wheels for this and i have posted them of to get rebuilt. Cant wait to get them back. More updates tomorrow as the club is on tomorrow evening, hopefully one of the kids dads will come along and have a look the RZ's bodywork, see if he is ok to paint it for us, (he painted our other project the Honda Melody Mini for free and he done an amazing job)

We had a good club this evening, the painter popped over and looked at the bodywork and he is happy to paint it all for just the cost of materials. Very happy with that offer. The only problem is i need both side panels as they have lugs snapped of and the painter isn't happy to fix them. 😥 I got the kids to pull the oil pump of to get it sent to Arrow. Also they have pulled the cylinder head of and its not looking to bad, both pistons are @1.00 over so not to bad. The bores seem in nice condition and the head hasn't got any damage as far as i can see.

Hi Yea, there's lots of really good guys on here And what you do is a great thing too Years ago our local beat copper used to do something the same, but when he retired and moved away there was no one to take over. And the powers that be wonder why kids get up to no good ! Good luck with the project Regards Dusty

Another updated, i dropped the petrol tank of to my mate whos gonna blast all the old paint of, I'm hoping it's not to bad under the paint but we will see.
Fingers crossed all the bodywork will head of to the painter by next weekend. The painter is of of the club members dad. Hes a top fella and his boy has been coming to the club for nearly 2 1/2 years every week, really good kid and his knowledge is and interest grows week by week.

The club made some more progress last night, the frame is now completely stripped and ready to get blasted, All the rear suspension have been stripped as well as the clocks and some old nackered switch gear, Hopefully the painter is collecting the bodywork less the tank so he can get that started. The wheels are of being rebuilt as i type. I sent a shopping list to norbo for new bits, so all thats left to do is the front forks and engine to strip. The kids are really looking forward to get the bits back so they can get building. Big pile of bits, lol

good progress, where are you getting the wheels done, somewhere local?? Thanks guys that means loads, as for the wheels a company called SFX wheels has helped the club out in the past and he is doing a good discount on the wheels for this project. He is also stripping and re powder coating the rims and hubs and then building the wheels with new stainless steel spokes. www.sfxwheels.moonfruit.com/Mention me and he might help you out. Another little update the blaster called me to go look at the petrol tank. He has blasted around the bottom edge of the tank. It has a little unwanted daylight showing but i hope it can be repaired. Hope there isn't anymore hiding under the rest of the paint

Even more updates, the painter came over this afternoon and collected the bodywork less the tank.
We have also worked out the colours that he will be painting the bike.
Mars red front mudguard. Audi A6 white for everything else.
