what surprises me when you are restoring a bike is the parts which are NLA i've bought parts before and thought theres no chance and got it then theres parts you think yeah no problem and then find it|NLA i was after the "E" clip for the gear shaft change lever turns out NLA item 16 so i had to go thru my spares and sort out a solution
i used a circlip in the end i think it should be ok

Well some times before you go forward you have to take a step back

so this looks better even the wires will touch

Well its taken a while but i'm pleased with the progress




So with that done i feel some progress is being made


i'll continue with the wiring for the rear light next man i'm slow thou

fitting parts then taking them off again to fit the right way.thats me all over

Well i didn't do owt at the w/end at the w/end on the bike the sun was out so Sue and myself hit the road. 8) 8) 8) 4 hrs later we got back freezing inside and out man my knees ached on monday
Anyway on a lighter tonight i wired the back end up
i started off with the rear light

then it was the rear indicators, these are the yambits indicator with the common black wire so while as i'd got the appropriate colour wire i changed them ya never know it might help later :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\


not forgetting the Earthing black wire

some thing i always do when using a dry crimp fitting is apply a small blob of solder at the end of the wire just to help as a contact point
so with that done it was a case of tidying up the loose ends, i'm pleased with the finish job.

Well with the wiring complete from the rear to the head stock all i need to do i sort out the switch gear, fit to the bars and then tackle to final stage of the wiring. I've got to get me head around it first thou
Anyway the rear master cylinder was calling my attention, it was serviced etc with Nsr Nick and a good job as well 8) but as usual it was missing the brake rod and a few other bits to complete the fitting NLA from Mr Yamaha. so after a chat with Dave (Fizzydog) i made my own brake rod once realizing how it fitted to the master cylinder so Thanks Dave for ya help.
using the old piston as a gauge i started with this

By linishing the bolt head down to a snug fit in the base of the piston

Then i final clean up of the parts they are now ready for the platers. easy really

Guys i hope this of use to anyone. :-\ tbh i have a pattern seat, one of those with the fiberglass base i bought it from a member on here and all was ok. But it bugged me that compared to the original cowel fittings. As you know on the original seat there is a "stud" type fitting and screwing into a fibre glass base didn't inspire my confidence.
As the seat had already had a cowel fitted the holes where already marked

We use at work a 6mm type jack plug fitting

when fitted and pulled inwards it forms a clamp type fitting leaving the facility to use a 6mm bolt type fitting

After inserting them into the base i pulled them up with 2, 8mm nuts and a bolt etc

So when all are fitted i now have the option to either use a bolt to fix or a stud and nut fitting to secure the seat cowel which will replicate the original fittings

Anyway tonight i'd thought about the tank, its looks good underneath but although it had had some paint scheme done with the evidence of some filler
Well it turns out it seams to have had a puncture wound at some time in its life there's no rot but the hole had been filled with silver solder or some thing :-\ :-\ however it gives me some confidence that a good job has been done in its history

So having warmed up the area to established the full extent of the damage and exposing the hole, i refilled it back in. So for me the next stage will be to pressure test the tank before i move forward with it.

Well some times things don't go to plan
Well the tank atm is a right pain in the arse i tried this stuff to check out for leaks etc

those who haven't used it, you spray the developer on the outside of the tank and the die pen on the inside and after a while if theres a leak the tank will bleed. well i did as above and it seams tanks ain't sealed as good as it looks
this was how i left it to check the following morning

and when i came to it the following morning

and then its been down hill since
long story short ive had to remove the effected area as i've been chasing my arse around follow leak after leak. so i've resorted to cutting the area out and start again so this is how it stands atm till i can get me head around it and replenish my gas bottle


Anyway with that to one side i'd been waiting to sort the switch gear out, i opted to powder coat the bodies rather than paint. thanks to Wards powder coaters in burton. 8) 8)

So with those done heres the before and after. Hope they work after all the trouble ;D ;D ;D ;D

looking good mate, too finish the switch gear off, paint the two little switches, with the arrows,L and R with white paint, tiny brush, allow to dry and then rub down with some wet and dry leaving the letters/arrows white then clear laquer, easy, Do the same with the light switch.

Small progress i'm afraid guys i collected my paint work from Crystral Paints in Pontyfract im well pleased 8) 8) its not a std Colour but i hope you like it, its Lemans Blue Metalic 381
the service was great


and i couldn't help putting it on the bike in natural light

so atm theres some electrical demons to solve, initially i had a problem with insulating the fixing screw of the "positive side" of the generator bushes which i've now solve "i think"? :-\ :-\
How ever there is more electrical work to solve around the front head lamp hence it being removed again
more questions to be asked ??

some progress guys with help from the air cooled boys
Well today guys i've made to some major progress for me anyway ;D ;D ;D

I first asked for help on the forum for head light wiring advice on the 1st July as i'd been avoiding this part in the build, i had various pm's and advice so thanks guys, you know who you are its seams simple really join the plugs first and then match the various colours simples
Well i can only guess in the passed the LH switch harness and the instrument (Dash) harness had been modified from a "D" model into an "E/F" model this appears to be the case as two plugs had been fitted to accommodate the E/F harness so straight away when i plug the two plugs together i had a miss match of colours and 12 wires gone in the two plugs and no wires left to plug into the main harness.
So i confess i'm wiring wizard so i have to say a thanks to Dave "Fizzydog" for his patience and his shoulder to lean on and also to Ed wiring wizard for his knowledge and support.

So this w/end it was a case of tools on the bench at the ready and some quiet time alone
So 8 wks later and the lamp is done or be it waiting for side light bulb
