its costing so much to restore to origonal now, think is going to be a trailer Queen going to shows! Got in contact with Simon5 finnaly today about sorting the lock set on to 1 key. Have a new ignition switch, got an origonal off set petrol cap and a new pair of seat locks that i sold to a forum member in 2008 but he didnt use on his rebuild, the lock is NLA. Fitted with origonal replated in yellow passivate screews.

Hi Bryan,
Had a look at you build, very nice work!, What did you do with the mudguards and air filter box and got them so shiny?
Mine are faded, what the secret?
Thanks
Kostas

Think I just cleaned with soapy water and polished a few times with bumper black. The sides of the airbox were cleaned up with fine wire wool and done with bumper black, will also be doing the petrol cap that way too. I think its all in this post.

cleaned and sprayed the exhausts today. As PJ1 is NLA Ive used the stuff Yambist is selling. Ive left the back of the hanger on 1 of the pipes as I want to reproduce the Orange paint spot. I think is a better match than PJ1, Noticed in this pic I posted a few pages back, that I hadnt done the clock nuts. stuck them on a bolt, wire wheeled them on the bench grinder, and a few coats of black, job done. Got given this as it was missing on the bike, coat of black and new screw and washer.

Finnishing off the inside of the tank b4 bodywork goes off to Norbo to get painted. Inside was a bit rusty, but hopefully will be ok. first part is Marine Clean and fish tank gravel. mix it with hot water and shake about for ages, rinse it out and do it again. Then its the Prep and Ready which kills rust and leave a Zinc Phospate coating preventing rust. And it ends up alot cleaner. Not using the epoxy sealer as its a good tank, lets hope!

nice job on the tank bryan mines as clean always put a dash of redex in to keep things a touch oily and rust free

They only rust when there is no petrol in them, as oxidisation needs air. Already starting to sow light rust since I rinsed the Prep and Ready with hot water.

Got a little done today. New replacement air box strips in place, oiled filter and fitted the lid. Head on and torqued down, temp sender, rear hose and new clamps fitted. Also new plugs and caps. I fitted engine case, kick start and an exhaust just for a pic.

I've just spent an hour reading through this thread, Bryan... It's pretty damned informative. Keep up the great work, can't wait to see the finished bike.

Today's job was to get the clutch and cover sorted, fitted new fiber clutch plates and replacement steel plates, oil pump and pipes to carb, and water pump. Waterpump gasket and oil pipe from tank should be here in a few days so I can fit it.

Had to make 2 washers to take the usual slack in the exhaust headers, had a bit of flat plate alloy and just need to do a bit more filing.

Ugh.. I hate doing those kind of jobs in aluminum, especially that kind of alloy. It clogs up the files in no time and it's fecking tough to work with! I'd much rather do a part in steel than in aluminum (at least when hand shaping it). I wonder if there are flap discs made for aluminum hmmm? Flap discs works great for shaping steel but it's pointless trying it on aluminum, except maybe cast aluminum, but even that can clog the disc up badly.
