Hello, just joined and looking forward learning from you guys. So my build is in its infancy and forgive me if I've posted in the wrong place! I have just acquired a Q reg rd250lc frame and would like to do a hybrid build! Nothing crazy and I've seen pics of completed bikes but none on how they got there. Im after fitting a yzfr125 swingarm in ( i have a complete swinger/wheel/shock/caliper etc, im after some advice on how best to fit this and whats involved? If anyone has done this before? Abit of guidance really π
Cheers
Adam

Hi Adam Welcome to the forum You are in the right place. Loads of high quality hybrids and standard builds here. Spend some time reading through. Lots of threads are very "in depth" and provide lots of vital info and "how to's" Let guys know roughly where you live and they may be able to guide you to local engineers/specialists should you need mods doing. Pretty sure the Yzf arm has been done before and nothing is impossible (usually!!) Regards Dusty

Hi Dusty,
Thanks for the welcome. Im based on the isle of wight! I have a guy here that i used a few years ago here that has a machine shop when i have some bits made for my old trackbike but haven't been in contact with him recently. Yeah I've seen pics of LC's with the yzf swinger in and few posts saying its a common option but nothing in between! Sure you guys can fill in the blanks . using an rs125 front end which just bolts right up! But as per many builds, rolling chassis first, worry about the rest later...

Internal measurement across the swingarm pivot on an Lc frame is 200mm if I remember correctly. Measure the Yzf width - the difference (if any) is your first issue. Spindle diameter next. Then you'll be looking at how you get the Lc shock to mount on the swingarm, and then it's chain alignment - hope you've got an engine ! Dusty

Thank you π Dusty, the swing arm has a gap either side when offered into the frame so i assume im going to have to shim the gap with spacers, and i have a yzf swingarm spindle en route and a friend with an RD one to use as reference. Think the biggest thing is figuring out if the top mount is going to offer up using the yzf suspension linkages. I do have an engine waiting in the wings, although its not paid for yet, but available for reference for aligning etc

Having done a quick search, it seems the Yzf arm is approx 4" longer than stock, which isn't ideal, but wont be a deal breaker. Rgv arms are 4" longer than stock too, but plenty of guys use them with no issues. I think Alex - Donkeychomp on here, had an aircooled with a Yzf rear end in it - the aircooled and Lc swingarm dimensions are the same. And yes, shims/spacers needed to take up the slack if it slots in and leaves a gap.

I think i saw that post shortly before i joined on here, but i think the top shock mount is different on the aircooled frames? Im wondering if its mods to the frame and or swinger to fit, hoping it will become apparent when this swingarm bolt arrives so i can start mocking up properly. I think the shock fitting is going to be the spanner in The works, however i will adapt and overcome haha

You beat me to it Dusty! Yes a YZF will fit (anything can with time/patience/money) but you do need spacers and of course some serious mods to the swing arm shock mounting position.
And welcome to the forum!

And welcome to the forum! Alex Hi Alex, Looking at your thread with that swingarm conversion, that the nuts!! I've messaged Chris to pick his brains and see about how to go about this. Thanks for the welcome, be sure to keep you all informed! Adam

Hi Adam welcome to the forum. Thats an interesting choice for a 250 LC, am i correect in thinking its a 4L1 model. The reason i ask is because its a very long swing arm for the LC 4L1 type bike. A standard 4L1 swing arm measures 46cm from center wheel spindle grooove to center swing arm pivot. The YZF arm is 100mm longer for the same measuring points. If you are using the standard seat and tail piece this might look odd. I just thought i would point this out in case you have not thought about it as i see you mention you only have a frame in your first post. Good look with the project what ever you decide and post lots of pictures. We like pictures Tony

Another thing...why not use a YZF front end, if anything for a bit of symmetry? And that does bolt straight on...well it did on an RD anyway!

Alex I have a front from a rs125 with a top yoke that's been converted with risers for handle bars but may look into fitting yzf front wheel (so they match) or rs rear wheel, whatever's easiest! Adam

Thank you all for the warm welcome. In all honesty this will be a slow burner as baby on the way (ya know how it goes!) But il be sure to post some pics hopefully over the weekend and keep you all updated. So today whilst looking through the scrap pile in my workshop, i found an old gsxr1000 shock from my old trackbike, i was looking at the fitting at the bottom and thought that might well be suited as a top mount on this yzf swinger so.....cut it off and offered up think it could well work nice welded into position. Only an idea but looks good and suits the rd250lc shock eyelets well so with abit more of a jig about tomorrow we will see. Pics to follow!
Cheers
Adam
