Seeing as I am between jobs at the moment I've started to put some garage time in. It's been a while since I blasted the sub frame and in that time spots of rust have appeared so I gave it another go this time with glass bead. I dug around and found my old Badger airbrush and sorted out my spray booth (the washing line and some welding wire) and gave it a couple of coats of primer. I re-blasted a top yoke while I was in the mood and put some primer on that too. As its all 2k I could get straight on with the top coat. About a year ago I bought half a litre of satin black so I thought I'd do them both in satin and go over the sub frame with gloss later. It looks very glossy for satin 🤔 I guess it's the top yoke that needs another coat then.

I like the cat flap, are you filthy rich? Filthy Rich and Cat Flap. Was that an Ade Edmundson and Rick Mayall thing? I don't think I ever watched it. Notice the little steps? She's getting on a bit so the Mrs. asked me to build her a step. For the cat that is, not the Mrs. You know how rare rain is these days? 20 seconds into putting the black on it started to rain. The paint only has a pot life of a couple of hours once mixed. I had to stand in the garage door way and spray a bit until the rain stopped.

Glad you are back on with the build. Good luck with it and keep the pics flowing. I've been stop/start with my latest 250 build too, but no rush. Enjoy, and good luck with the job hunt.

Glad you are back on with the build. Good luck with it and keep the pics flowing. I've been stop/start with my latest 250 build too, but no rush. Enjoy, and good luck with the job hunt. I have actually been doing stuff but I'm like a 13 year old and get easily distracted. I've been doing bits on the 125 as well. Most of the stuff I don't think people want to see or I forget to take before and after photos in my excitement 😉 I wanted to see how the airbrush went with the new paint. I'd actually forgot how to adjust it and strip it for cleaning it's been that long since I used it. Now I think I've got to grips with it I'm going to try being more organised and do stuff in batches. First I need to visit the paint shop. I'm going to take the yoke and ask if it's really satin. What must the gloss look like! 😎 I painted a Malaguti 50 with it about 18 years ago including the tank/panels and frame. For bike stuff it's pretty good. I wouldn't attempt an LC paint set though.

Looking good, very satisfying cleaning up the old bits , I'm past that stage with my build but kind of miss it think it's my favourite part ☺️, keep up the good work 👍 I tend to clean up bits, bead blast or whatever then put them away. I've got to a point now where I want to get some bits completely finished and ready to fit. The sub frame is now stashed away in the spare bedroom.

Well it's not actually happened yet but it is happening if you know what I mean. Some of the parts I previously stripped have corroded slightly since I did them so I've done them again and some bits have been in paint stripper and need a bit more fettling. The side stand seems to have a bit of a line almost a crack near the weld so I'm going to TIG it a bit before painting. Oh and the Mrs has put clothes on my painting line so either move them or rig something up somewhere else. Stuff ready/nearly ready for painting.

It' a slower than I would like process this masking off. To be fair some bits needed a bit more bead blasting and I'm maybe a bit over ambitious with the number of bit's I want to do in one go Anyway the new line is done and nearly ready for action. The cat kept me company while I had lunch at my desk.

Still too shiny 😎 I think I'm going to have to buy some matt and mix it myself.

or just buy some satin? Good progress though, apart from the washing.

or just buy some satin? Good progress though, apart from the washing. I have tried to buy satin twice. The first time a year ago I just explained what I wanted. Then on Tuesday I took the ultra glossy top yoke in, the result of using "satin" No. 1 and also an original F2 top yoke and an LC sprocket mounting as examples of what I wanted and ended up with "satin No. 2. If that's any less glossy than "satin" No. 1 then it's a very fine margin. I think I'll make another visit and just get some matt then make like an old school DJ and do some mixing 😀

Yeah I nearly went for it and on the other bike I might have done but for this one I'm trying for as near to standard as budget and skill allows so I'm gonna try a different tack. He did say for satin they just mix Matt and gloss. Looks like 99:1 to me.

I went back to the paint shop and I saw the same guy who served me the other day. He was quite surprised when I told him it was still very much gloss and showed him some photos. He said he only used 150ml of gloss to 350 of matt. Then he said that the matt may be quite satin anyway. The plan now is to use the matt neat and see how that looks then adjust until I'm happy. My next problem is working out how to mix small quantities accurately. The pot I use for the airbrush is only about 25mm dia. and 25mm deep. I think I have some syringes in the garage somewhere (without needles I might add). I just need to find them. Surprising to me was that the paint was still a bit tacky this morning, as in not quite dry and not a very bright gloss kind of tacky. I didn't put the top coat on until about 6pm so that might be it. The last lot I did was in bright sun light and it had most of the afternoon to dry. I put them all on the washing line to bake in the sun while I went into town and it seems to have done the trick although the alternator side was lying on the grass when I arrived home .

Bingo!I had to quickly put one caliper together to see how it looks. Very happy with it. Now I know what I'm doing (kind of) I can look forward to polishing, masking and painting three sets of wheels. Oh and fitting the new seals and bearings 😁 Really happy with how this lot has turned out 😎. Daisy is not impressed. I know a little of how a cat's life is now 😁.

Steve, all your paintwork looks superb. Flawless finish. Great work Mark Thanks Mark. As a bike builder of quite some reputation I'm chuffed you think so. There are some tiny bits and bobs but I'm happy with them. Back in my younger (slimmer/dafter) days I tended to get bits chromed. Only stuff that would have been zinc so just upgraded. I've found an Ice-cream tub marked 'LC/Chrome YPVS. Some of the bits will be standard chrome by Yamaha such as the bottom yoke pinch bolts and some by me. I'm trying to work out what goes where. Not easy, especially when I have odd numbers of some things. An odd curiosity is the back brake arms. Two arms, two different lengths 😃 One must be off a 200 Yam.

Nice paint finish and progress Steve. I'm just doing some home plating myself for my project. can be a bit hit and miss but I'm persevering. Thanks Shaun. I'm cutting up some nice thick ply to make a couple of extra shelves for the cupboard in one of the spare bedrooms. As I finish the paint on an item I'm going to store them in the bedroom. That's between me and you right? What the Mrs doesn't know etc. (I'm sure she already knows TBH). Best of luck with the plating. I've done a bit myself. I started about ten years ago and had some good results especially with the gold and olive. I moved here and left the zinc plates in the electrolyte and it ruined them both so I have bought some more chemicals and plates to start again. Also got myself a proper power supply. It helps to make it more repeatable. I actually bought the zinc nickel kit. it's supposed to be more resistant to corrosion. I like the idea of doing it yourself. You can do one bolt or a batch. Have you done a bottom yoke? How did it come out? Where do you get your water? I use the de-humidifier. What comes out of that should be pure distilled water.

Someone gave me a plating kit a few years ago, and just refreshed it with a new starter kit from Classic Plating and includes the power supply which does give more control on the process. I haven't done anything as big as the bottom yoke, the one I have for the project has been previously painted olive green so will live with that. I've got the clear/blue, yellow and olive green passivates so playing about with those at the moment. Its time consuming but quite satisfying when it goes right.
My LC brake arm is approx 85mm eye to eye if that helps identifying your parts.

I've taken over one of the cupboards and even made a couple of extra shelves. As parts are finished, painted, cleaned/polished or plated they go in there. My Mrs hasn't spotted it yet but only things that are spotlessly clean go in there.

I've spent a few hours getting fixings and other parts ready for plating. Still got a lot to do before I'm ready. I want to set up a production and blitz it when I start. Thanks for the info re the brake arm. If that's correct then the shorter one is LC. I'm not sure what the other one is then. I presumed the shorter one would be RD200. My 200 still has the brake on so it's simple to just measured it. The longer one is about 98mm centres.

Black Rubber! All the stuff from a bag marked 'rubber' has been thoroughly de-greased, scrubbed in hot soapy water, rinsed and laid out to dry on a tea towel. I know what about half of it is and where it goes. Bear in mind they may be some RD200, F2 YPVS and maybe some plumbing bits in amongst them! I'd best get rid of the tea towel before the Mrs. comes home. I may need the help of The Collective to ID some of it. I guess when I start assembling the bike it should become clear 😁
