Well Guy's ..... Here we go again.... I purchased this bike probably four or five years ago now, and it has sat in the background, whilst other bikes have taken my time and money... But very gently I have been purchasing odd bits and bobs that will aid the restoration of this much unloved bike. My aim is to get it back to close near factory standard, although I have a couple of curveballs... One will be the exhausts, as I have a pair of near mint Micron's... And the second which, I may or not throw into the mix us the fitting of a belly pan... It had one on when I bought it and not sure if I like the look...or not... Jury's out... But we can decide on that nearer the time... Well here is my staring point... A good start for sure, although a non runner...not bothered about that as it will get the full strip and rebuild... The starting of this thread should hopefully carry me through and completed in time for the spring......I am a little ahead as I did strip it a little while ago, and started getting some of the long winded jobs done...paint and plating, so hopefully we should keep some momentum going now... The starting point..... All comments well received... And if I am making mistakes...please tell me...all welcome...apart from the decal police....!! Gavin

Hi Eyrey
Saw that... And what a bloody bargain...Did you get it collected...Hope Its as good in the flesh for you, it looked nice, and from what I could see from the original restoration thread everything's been done....I see you got some mirrors too, think they are like the holy grail....it the only thing I am missing for mine, managed to get everything else I think....apart from original pipes...but happy to re fit the Micron's I have.... Can't understand why it didn't sell faster...certainly right money, and for a rare bike, as produced in low numbers.... I think I have spent far more than that on spares, let alone the original purchase and paint, plating etc.... ...you must be getting near to start up time on the 500 by now??? Watching that one with much interest.... Always wanted a 500 v-duo...closest I have got is an original sales brochure....Lol...You should sell tickets for the start up.... Trying law a bit back, I would hate to think what you have spent on that project....keep it going..!!

Cheers for that, I keep promising myself a trip to the Squires...but fair way from me in North Lincs... So I guess the easiest way will be at Cadwell, at the annual track weekend..by then I may even have built myself something 2 stroke I can rag around the track... Problem is, it always seems to clash with the annual family holidays...

A bit further on... Stripped for inspection, and divide all the bits up for sending for plating, paintwork, and into tubs for overhauling... But first just rip it to bits and look it all over to see what I am up against... Think the chains scrap... But you never know, our favourite eBay seller may want it ...may be of use to someone.....!!!? Layed out for inspection All boxed up safe and sound ready for overhauling...when I get round to it..... Shock horror... When removing the side stand... The frame cracked away to reveal a previous repair... So ground out ready for weld up job prior to paint.. Ta dah... Welded up and sent for magic paintwork to be carried out at Colour Worx in Scun*thorpe.... He has done all the bodywork and frame and wheels ... Always a great job at a fair price... Now time to rebuild some components so it will make it easier to rebuild as some assembly's will be done and ready to make it a bolt together job... Lots of parts on order from loads of places, Mr Postie is really busy, bank account emptying faster than I'd hoped.....but looking forward to the rebuild... Gavin

Well Eyrey .... I will certainly do that and aim for Cadwell PS track day... Is there any dates out yet......? Gives me time to get something to ride.... Like you I will be keeping an eye out for some mirrors, but £160 is a bit beyond me... After all they are only mirrors for gods sake...!!! Regards to the pipes... Well not sure if F2 was the same.., be good if they are , as there seems to be a few sets cropping up...!! Maybe someone with better knowledge can tell us..!

Not a lot achieved tonight... just starting to collate a few parts refinished so assembly will be faster... So blasted a few parts and gave them a coat of paint.... They certainly look better than they did... Trying this VHT paint, goes on well , just hope it's durable..... Blasted the brake discs... Again gave them a coating... This is the stuff I've used... Paints really well....goes on super...going to do my upper crankcase and barrels too...!! Gavin

Well, all been a bit slow since Christmas.. But needs to be full steam ahead now... Before work goes crazy and time becomes more limited. I am still on the refurb of bits so when bolting together it will hopefully race away... I also managed to pick up some of the missing bits of the jigsaw from Newark Winter Classic show...thanks Norbo...So on with some bits and bobs... A bit of blasting and cleaning up of the footrests and brackets ... Then a new set of footrest rubbers and exhaust mounts, bit of spit and polish and they will go on the shelf ready for fitment and final polish... Then the bit I always look forward too... The engine strip and build... Here goes for the strip... It's condition inside was not great, been bored 1st oversize... So will need to go again...crank is well worn, and welded... But thankfully have a spare to send away, so down to crankcases and covers.. Lots of cleaning and blasting now...just look at the clutch casing, someone's a bit artistic.... The shagged crank... Welded but heaps of play... So a spare will be built.... A good clean up...and a trip through my blaster...wash off...ready to go..!! Well too bloody cold in workshop... So until the weekend..!

Well, cylinders and spare crank sent for rebuild... So whilst waiting, bit more fettling in workshop... Hope to get casings painted and some more ancillaries done.... Managed to get some clocks and a spare facia off Eddie Street..(top banana)... So bit of blasting and time to try out my latest toy.... I have bought a DIY powder coating gun.... Just to go some small bits... Not a huge fan of powder coating...prefer paint, but I thought I would give it a whirl... Results will follow... The gun I bought is from Electrostatic Magic...just in case anyone has any hints and tips...! Casing before... And after a bit of TLC...paint not powder on this bit.... So onwards and upwards..!

Not much progress, but still heading forwards.... More painting..! And cleaning, and painting..!!! Top crankcase and cylinder head, blasted, cleaned and painted.....!! Now I have found a new to me product that seems to make plastic products look as good as new... Just wash and clean, then it's a rattle can spray, it's a plastic primer... But as you can see comes out really well....! It really does look as good in the flesh as the pic's... I will get the details off the can if anybody is interested ... Was bloody expensive for an aerosol...but worth every penny... Think it was about £15 can... From memory... And the filter case under assembly... Next for the magic spray is the clock casing...!!! Before... After..... I had a final job to do before the cold got the better of me...Blasted the old clocks facia, then I will get the DIY powder coating gear out in the week and see how we get on... Results to follow... Time for a warm..!

Well as promised time to get the newly acquired DIY powder coating gear out.....! Here's what I've started with...! Then a quick trip through the bead blast cabinet...to get to this..! Then a light coating with the powder coating gear and stuck in the oven...10mins...180 degrees...and a few mins to cool...!! This is what you get..! So built up again with clocks and a few new decals from Simon Wells....et voila.!!! Another job finished....not a big one but another one off my tick list.... Crank and barrels back, so think I can get the engine assembled.....job for the weekend.!

Thanks for the info on the paint. I'll look it up. I tried something today with my rear mudguard and light mount. Dylon clothing dye. I've seen people dyeing skyway bmx wheels with it and they come out mint. Either I did it wrong or it don't work so forget that sh@t lol pity that as I thought I'd had a good idea

So will will be looking for Cadwells classic track day and other outings.... Up early and off to workshop for some more me time before kids are up and need ferrying about...! Gav

Well, this weekend has been productive in good ways and frustrating in a really shi**y way... It has involved engine building which is always great and really enjoy this bit of the build.... Started with h my newly blasted and painted case... All gearbox internals checked and cleaned...new bearings and seals throughout... Dropped into the lower case along with my freshly built crank. Then, on with the upper case...all new case studs and nuts...genuine Yam... New power valves, bushes and seals...ready to go into my newly bored cylinders...freshly painted for the occasion... Barrels fitted, all going super smoothly...and little or no interruption ...happy days.. Head on,torqued up, barrels tightend down... And now the moment of truth...newly acquired test kit...fitted... And testing... And all good...had a bit of trouble getting the exhaust outlets to seal. But when I did, it confirmed all was well... Then the shi**ty job... Brake calipers to strip... By he'll were they rusty..!! Even had to weld a bar to the Pistons to remove.... But once all stripped, put them through my blaster and time for paint....this is first coat... Needs some more, but I have had enough this weekend... Time for a beer and get some more bits ordered....!!

Nice progress I hate doing calipers Steve I'm with you there Steve... I would say "Hate" doesn't come close....there really isn't anything that gives me any satisfaction with doing them...the only thing is I do feel better when the jobs out of the way...maybe I should start doing them first....!! Just waiting for all new pistons and seals and we are in business... Then the reassembly can start..!! Happy days.! Gav

Not a lot to show really... Been doing a bit more with my DIY powder coating... Good results for minimal outlay and best of all no waiting for bits and bobs... So it was onto my switch gear... here's what I started with.... Not pretty..!! This one shows the casing after blasting, coating and decals fitted... And then finally built up back into something useable...!! Result... So another bit done... So then onto rebuild of the rear brake master cylinder...quick strip, blast, rebuild kit fitted and built back up ready to fit.... My shelf of rebuilt parts is now bulging and I now can't wait for the frame to come back from paint... Should make the build quick and painless....!!!
