Your a pathfinder for sure ,its easy to see were big company's, or an individual burn through shed loads of money and time doing 'R&D". make all the cad models you like it, still comes down somebody with a spanner etc to see it through.

right its been an age since I did any updates, I've been busy on lots of things (mainly not this project unfortunately), however, things have been progressing slowly in the background, so got the old camera out and took some piccies as I know how much you all like piccies ! Had a few knock backs on the engine front, so after some thinking time and lots of drinking tea and rubbing me chin, I have changed tack and decided to cover all of my basis and build 3 different engines so that any further issues I hit I should still be able to move forward. So now I have the following 3 engines; 1. Original "one off" special RD400LC engine - waiting on some "one off" sleeves being made and fitted 2. Long Rod 350LC (back up if I get delayed too much) 3. Air cooled RD400 F engine (worst case scenario !) So to press the engine stakes are as follows; 1. RD400LC - bottom end built, waiting on sleeves 2. Long rod 350LC - completely built 3. RD400F AC - bottom end build, top end rebored, just needs painting some piccies below of the engines; RD400LC Special 350LC Long Rod RD400 AC In addition I purchaased a new toy the other week, which I'vew been playing with and learning how to weld Ali etc, its a great bit of kit, shame I am not up to using its capabilities at the moment....... So what else have I been doing, well I've been playing with a programmable igntion, been making some ignition curves up etc and will be testing it all out in the next few weeks, here's the kit etc And finally, back to the rolling chassis, engine fitting, well its moved along, backwards I think at the moment, but I've got a good number of parts made now and fitted to the bike, the engine is bolted tight in place and it all aligns up, so just got a cradle to make now to stiffen the front of the engine up, but carbs fit nicely and plenty of room for things to be fitted the chain is nicely aligned but the engine has had to be offset to the left a bit, but the weight will be compensated for with other stuff so still loads to do and my list is a longer than a long thing !! , but if I can get a few clear days sorted and free then I am hoping to move things along quiet quickly Next jobs will be making the engine cradle, overhauling the brakes and wheels, and then looking at some make shift exhausts so I can run the engine up before doing the turbo side of things, water pump etc is also needing to be located and fitted, but things are moving along, which is the main !

Nice work fella at least the project is moving forward not backwards, I like your engine back up plan too

I thought about this a while ago.
The way I see it, a 2 stroke uses an expansion chamber to try and push some of the charge back into the cylinder before the exhaust port closes. Hence the power band as it only be becomes perfect at a certain RPM due to the sound wave having a fixed time.
To turbo charge a conventional 2 stroke means pressurising the fuel/air mixture, and so would escape before the exhaust port closes; making the job of the expansion chamber harder. This would probably lead to a lot more unburnt fuel and upset the environmentalists if not the engine.
However, if you were to use compressed air (with a turbo) and only inject fuel in through the head after the exhaust post had closed I can imagine this would be quite efficient, and not need an expansion chamber.
Sound like your secret?

hehe, Hi Jon, good to hear from you, its an interesting conumdrum, and the more you think about it, the more it drives you mad !!
I think I have gone through each possible permumtation and still can't decide which route to take, I think in the end I will just have to try out the various scenarios and see which suits best, the challenge (read HEADACHE) of this project is to get the turbo side working, I am certain I can make it work, how well/efficient it is will be a whole different challenge, at the moment the chassis mods etc and the various engine configurations have thrown up a few headaches of their own, but I am working through them - it always helps (alot) when you have loads of machinery to hand so you can "make the parts" to find a way round the problem !

thanks guys, just had word that my modified barrels should be ready next week, so once I get them back I will be able to make some very quick progress as I can't do too much else until I know how it all fits together so that I can get things aligned etc, but hopefully getting close now, next big headache will be some temporary exhausts so I can test the basic engine, assuming that works as expected, then its full steam ahead to turbo city !

Looking impressive Dave, will be very interested to see the end result. Its nice to see someone making progress I have hardly touched mine since i called up and bought the parts from you and for the last four weeks haven't even been on a bike thanks to a BMW driver whos brakes weren't as good as my DRZ's! had a chance this weekend to do a bit more on the bike, so thought I'd better start working out how to get some exhausts on it so that the engine can be run up in normal aspirated mode and also needed to start thinking about controls, wiring, cooling, radiator etc. Got some handle bars fitted which need to be shortened a bit, but managed to make a throttle cable up from a an LC and Air Cooled cables, and it works a treat, so well chuffed with that, put some LC switch gear on and they route and fit ok, so that's good, also put an old loom on to see how it will route etc and that doesn't look too bad either, also started looking at where the water pump, battery, oil pump, oil tank and coils will go, so plenty to keep me busy ! Also managed to work out where to route the exhaust and mount the turbo, so all in all a pretty productive weekend, although I've loads to do and lots of parts to sort out including a different radiator as the ZXR400's is just too long, so need a shorter one, a trip to the breakers yard me thinks ! Anyway, here's a photo to keep you interested, put the tail/seat unit on that I am thinking of using The more I look at it the more I think I am going to need to do something about its looks, but then again, if it goes well, I probably won't care if its fugly !!

Coming alomng mate...dont worry about what it looks like, stick a fag packet inspired race rep scheme on those panels and jobs a good 'un..or maybe the 1990s Kawasaki France endurance bikes, will a splash of red in them would do the trick..

thanks guys, TBH how it looks at the moment isn't a real issue, yeah sure it would be nice for it to look good, but that can be solved, getting the basic engineering side of things sorted is the goal, everything else will follow

well its been stagnant for a while, but it was all veryexcited.com yesterday when my special barrels finely arrived from having new sleeves fitted to my spec for the engine. So today it was all about measuring, doing calcs and building the engine up, so first off it was "professor Muttnuts" doing his best impression to look like he knows what he is doing, so out with the chemistry set..... then it was a quick inspection of the barrels and the "special sleeves" that have been made and fitted for me and then it was time to do some measurements and calcs, after that it was time to assemble the top end onto the engine and then some more checks on the port timing etc, and all looks good so what you see before you is genuine one off 400cc LC engine, not big bore or anything silly, its a 64mm bore x 62mm stroke engine (8mm longer stroke than an LC) Compression ratio is bang on at 6.75:1, so I am expecting compression pressures to be around the 125/130psi, which is fine as I'll be running a max of 13psi boost, so in theory the engine will be running approx 140 to 145psi which is plenty safe for an LC engine. So now that the engine is built, I can really start to crack on with the bike, still loads to do and lots of challenges to over come, but the fundamental experimental engine is built and on paper at least, it all looks good so I am very pleased with it. next is to get it running, maybe that will be the next installment, who knows.........

It looks like its keeping you out of trouble Dave. I'm intrigued what the chemistry is all about, but looks fun. Barrels look great and enjoying the blog. Hope you get time to eat your easter eggs!

so its been a while since I've done an update, I've been busy on the build as and when time allows, but have made some good progress over the last few weeks despite a good few distractions and jobs to do ! Anyway, I've been fairly busy on different fronts and things are beginning to come together, after a lot of hassle, I've finally managed to sort out the last engine issue as far as the 400LC hybrid engine is concerned and its now ready for its final assembly before being run up for the very first time. Some photo's below my good ole Dad machining my cylinder head, well he was watching the lathe anyway while I was setting up the burette etc so that I could measure the CC's etc and I managed to get me hands on a really trick digital dash for the bike, so this is going to be put on it as well now..... so what else I have I been up to, well I've finished my hydraulic clutch conversion and that will be bleed up and tested tomorrow and I've had the carbs to bits, fully set them up and jetted eytc, also sorted out the choke side of things and finished the throttle cable off, so that's another item ticked off..... the reed blocks are also done, and are now fitted, as are the carbs etc...... and what else have I been doing, oh yeah I had a really good guy make these for me.............. and finally.............. The turbo is actually mounted and fitted in place........... so the next steps are to sort the wiring and finish off the water cooling side of things, make a new gear linkage up, finish off the modified kick starter, which needs a little more tweaking, still lots to do including working out where things are going etc and of course to fire it up for the very first time oh and I have some silencers to make yet as I need to run it without the turbo first, so more fabricating, still its all moving foward which is the main.......
