Just thinking what do you look back on from when you were just starting out and think really? Or what happened to that? Got loads but I’ll start with Bob heath visor spray, redundant when fog city came about. Derri boots? Plastic motorcycle boots what could go wrong?

My leather jacket. It weighed almost as much as I did, every pocket crammed with tools and a few spares. Just got one light weight tool now. An AA card.

Going to work as an apprentice engineer on my FS1E in 1983, bike was £80 which cleaned me out, so I had a helmet out of Kay’s catalogue and a donkey jacket, welders gauntlets and steel toe cap boots which were all free issue from work.

I worked in the bike trade so got lots for feck all. My first helmet though was a hand me down from my dads mate who was giving up bikes it was a kangol that weighed as much as I did it didn’t fit me. But I loved it. The first I bought was a Nolan n33 in red and white. We were a Frank Thomas dealer so had loads of it.

Thinking way way back. A gallon of 4 star was about 55p.50p went in the LC and 5p (I only tried this once) in my Zippo. A bunch of us used to meet up in a pub in Egham then cane it down the A30 to Camberley to a place called the Agincourt. Fridays and Saturdays were heavy metal nights. Almost flipped a 350LC trying to do the worlds worst wheelie and smashed the rear light. New one was a shocking £20. Cheaper now for some odd reason. Punk rock was dead, New Wave was in then the bloody New Romantics. I remember seeing a lad I knew who I bought an LC from walking down Staines High Street in spandex leggings and make up on. Allspeeds were about £120 a pair. A stage 3 tune from Stan was dirt cheap. I had that done and the bike flew...for about 400 miles then exploded. Another bloke I knew couldn't afford to renew his insurance so rode his LC to a quarry and set fire to it to claim on what was left of the policy. The police knew us all on a first name basis. This list could go on forever.
But. They were fantastic days. No speed cameras and all our bikes could outrun plod. Beer was cheap. You could buy stuff you wanted in a bike shop...and in a supermarket too, unlike today. I'm just glad I survived it all. Nowadays if I rode like I did back then I'd have no licence!

Had a pair of cowboy boots with Cuban heels that were totally impossible to ride my RD with… so as with most other unwanted things on the bike , I cut them off…. I call it my Alibaba phase…lived in those boots for years, but the look didn’t catch on… Got a pic somewhere… if I find it I’ll post it! 🙈

A gallon of 4 star was about 55p.50p Alex Fighting with outer engine case screws with the wrong type of screw driver. First bike a ever road at 14 Honda C90 field bike petrol was 32p a gallon, first ride on the road on the back of a mates VELOCETTE VIPER 350 that was it never looked back. Trying to keep out of view of a dealer while a mate rammed matches into the pedal mechanism on an FSIE just before he rode it in to part ex it for a GT250 Suzuki. The first engine me and a mate stripped GT250, we split the cases decided to have some food I told him DO NOT remove the gear clusters until I get back. I get back to his house to find the gear clusters in a bucket of fairy liquid we had to dry build it to figure it all out. My dad had a Honda C50 to go to work on he blew it up asked me to fix it. I decided to just swop the motor out I could only get a C90 engine from a breaker, he was well happy on the Monday going to work never did tell him it was 90cc engine.

Surely a 1980’s jacket is more desirable than 1980’s bike as they are even rarer so got to be worth the cost of an Lc speedo?

From 1980 (aged 16) and for the next ten years, I never had any gloves or boots. I remember having fingerless weight lifting gloves as motorbike gloves seemed too bulky at the time. Not fun riding in the snow. First helmet was a black thermoplastic Nova. Jon

I had deri boots and the FT buckle boots, both hand me downs from my old man.
Also had a Belfstaff wax cotton jacket and trousers, which already had 100k of dispatcher miles on em.
Black as soot, as a bride at a local pub found it when she walked into me, leaving road grime all down her previously white dress. I made a sharp exit..

Worked my ass off all summer and bought a jacket from Lewis Leathers. Still got it and I can almost get into it in just a t-shirt, in the day I wore two jumpers and a T-shirt under it. Funny how things shrink in the back of the wardrobe.
Went to the Agincourt in Camberley a few times - got hit over the head with I think, a pool cue - fortunately my cheapo ‘Bieffe’ helmet took the brunt of that one.
Happy days.
