Frank Thomas 5 buckle boots. Don't laugh we all did it didn't we............. didn't we? ? I did , thought I was the biz on my DT175 , til the stitching went and the red rubber bit on the front curled up like a dried up kipper !! Weren't many options at the time , until I saw the Sidi MX boots with the dimpled protectors and velcro fastening , had those for years , great boots . Anyone remember the cheapo "Yamaha" gloves in red, white and blue ?? No lining , and if they got wet while riding the dye went on your hands and it looked like you were still wearing 'em when you took 'em off !! lol

I worked in the bike trade so got lots for feck all. My first helmet though was a hand me down from my dads mate who was giving up bikes it was a kangol that weighed as much as I did it didn’t fit me. But I loved it. The first I bought was a Nolan n33 in red and white. We were a Frank Thomas dealer so had loads of it. I was lucky enough to go to the NW200 as a kid and stayed with Jim Dunlop (Joey's brother) . Out in the back garden was a yellow Kangol helmet with the familiar black stripe on it . That was heavy too, cos the lads had used it as a cement bucket and it was half full of dried cement !! lol

From 1980 (aged 16) and for the next ten years, I never had any gloves or boots. I remember having fingerless weight lifting gloves as motorbike gloves seemed too bulky at the time. Not fun riding in the snow. First helmet was a black thermoplastic Nova. Jon I had one of those Nova helmets , just as an emergency spare if anyone needed a lift , no visor or anything . Was fettling my DT in the garden one day when a local smellbag showed up on a ratty Honda 50 looking a loan of a helmet . I gave him the Nova and didn't see him until about a month later, he was talking to a couple of lads outside and had the helmet in his hand . I went out and said " Thanks for dropping me helmet back Johnny " , at which point he replied " What are you saying about MY helmet !! " , and threw it on the ground open side up , squaring up to me for a fight . While he was arguing the toss our Jack Russell went round behind Johnny , c**ked his leg , and pissed right into the helmet . I told yer man to keep the feckin' helmet and not to ask me for anything again . Johnny turned round , picked up the lid , rammed it onto his head , and rode off into the sunset issuing dire threats about anyone trying to claim "his" helmet . How we did laugh !!! lol .
