HOW much?? And they still fecking strike over pay... Alex Don’t think it’s the drivers on strike. They're trying to introduce new shift patterns by the sounds of it. Like increasing the length of the days worked, the number of days, the days between and changing the rates so for instance instead of time and a half it will be time and a third etc. etc. Some accountant somewhere will have done a spread sheet. Trouble is you're dealing with people here not XL. Obviously to make it simple the press will condense it for the masses to "striking over pay." leaving out all the complicated bits. That makes it easy for the average Love Island viewer to understand.

I agree with Tony, I hope you enjoy the course and also that it helps you find something you want to do later.
The trials and tribulations of this make tough reading Steve, so feel for ya
I went contracting for a while and then decided to do freelance work. Subtle differences lol. Ive also found that I worked much harder for myself than I ever did for other people, so self employment isnt always the dream its cracked up to be. Not that Id change it... like Tim I also respect and hate my boss in equal measure. Blokes a w**ker but hes fair lol

I'm thinking of it as a few weeks, maybe months of retirement before I go back to work. When or maybe if I get to proper retirement I may be too knackered to do all the things I wanted to get on with. I'm just getting on with stuff and making the most of my time. It feels just like a long weekend to me. My Mrs is self employed so I have an insite. She complains about the hours she does and I say there's only one person can change that! She actually just popped in for a very rare lunch break, good job I was doing something propper, in her eyes, painting wood treatment on the back gate. Half an hour earlier I was watching BSB from Thruxton, I was on MY lunchbreak though!

Problem with self employment is all the paperwork, you end up spending a lot of time just book keeping, and then dealing with customers, let alone the actual work, or that's what I found running a my property maintenance company.

I took a voluntary redundancy package a couple of years ago. Travel time was close to 3 hours a day, so was longs days and with sh1t management it helped me to decide to leave. I had paid off my mortgage, and we have a small income from a 2nd property, so I only needed a part-time less stressful job to cover the bills, so I ended up getting some contract work as a DT Technician in a few local schools, then I took a permanent part-time DT and Engineering Technician role at a nice school, but 40 mins travel each way. The stress is a lot less now. I just work 3.5 days a week and get 12 weeks holiday. It is quite good to help some of the kids who need it. Shame about the tw4ts, but you get that in all walks of life.
When you see the cross section of abilities and behaviour in school, you realise that that is a fair representation of what people are like in the real world, and you understand why there are so many dumb asses and tw4ts in society! :-)
I though they may have said I was over qualified for these roles, but I explained that I only wanted a part time, low stress role, and they are happy they took me on, as they do value my input and experience.
If you are after something low stress, schools are not a bad place to be.
Since I left my old job after 11 years there, I have had 3 newer cars, a newer motorbike, finished rebuilding two of my project bikes and gone out on my motorbikes about 5 times as often as before and get time to work on them too, so overall a lot better work life balance!

I said to my 'Work Coach' the first time we met. I'm 59. I consider my working career to be nearly over. I have no ambition and no drives as far as work life goes. If I'm looking then I'm looking for something less stressful and with less responsibility than I had before. I said to her that if I'm asked that classic question in an interview "where do see yourself in five years time?" I'll say in my garden on a deck chair! She said it might be best not to say either of those things! To be fair the job I had was less stressful than it was at one time due to some re-structuring and putting almost all projects under a dedicated Project Manager and I worked under him. Before at one time I could be running five or six projects at once and dealing with all the clients and the problems virtually alone. The hours got better as well. Sometimes when we worked strictly 8:30 to 5:00 it could take half an hour to do the 100m to get off the estate and an hour to do the ten miles home. they started allowing us to do 7:30 to 4pm and 2pm Fridays so that aspect got better as well. I would have liked to drop down to 3.5/4 days but I'm pretty certain our boss wouldn't have accepted it. As it is it's 0 hours now! If the Mrs. and I had a plan it was to do two more years and call it a day. We hung onto our previous house when we bought this one for a couple of reasons but as a consequence we had to take a mortgage after being shot of it for about twelve years. Like you we have a small income from it but at the moment most of it goes on the mortgage but in two years we should be rid of that one as well. Ideally I would have liked them to make me redundant in two years and then say adios. It just came a bit early to fit into the plan. Doing the rough sums though if the redundancy works out at about a years pay after tax etc then I'm only losing out on a year compared to if I left in two years with nothing. On ther plus side I'm spending a lot of time in the garage We live about six miles east of Hull and this job is at our side of town so the location is nearly perfect. I won't have to go into Hull at all. I'm sure you'll all agree that that is a good thing .

Oh no! An interview Put your Motorhead shirt on, and turn up on a motorcycle.... but you might get unlucky and not be prejudged in this all "inclusive" society of ours.... and get the job.... I've found a shirt, stuck it in the wash and dragged some shoes out for a polish. Even my trousers are going to get an iron. I never did that when I had a job. I don't recall having an interview since the one for my apprenticeship in 1979! I've had ten jobs but basically as a tradesman it was pretty much walk in wearing whatever you normally wear, jeans and a T shirt, chat to the gaffer or Foreman, then see if you can actually do the job when you started. I've even had just phone calls. usually it was someone I knew putting my name forward. I once got a call from my mate asking where I was working and how much I was on. I told him £85.00. he said these are paying £135.00 plus loads of overtime. I'll pick you up at 6:00 tomorrow. I went back to my old place on the Friday to collect my tools and the Manager asked me where I'd been. He asked me how much they were paying and he replied "that's more than me." So that was that. Just to clarify. I'd been there just 2 weeks and with less than 3 weeks no notice is required from either party. It's a bit naughty not to contact them but I was 20 and didn't care! The numbers sound a bit pathetic but this was 1984 and £135 plus overtime was good money for the job then.

Well that was interesting. Two guys in their early 20's asking me lots of questions I wasn't prepared for. What do you think is your best quality? I'm 59 and I've still got plenty of hair. What do you think is your worst? I have a bit of a beer belly. What would be your ideal role? Fake taxi driver. Well I've heard it said that you should be yourself. That's alright then. They'll think I'm a tw@tt

My most hated question I ever had at an interview (I got the job by the way) was
What animal would you most like to be?
I replied 'human'.
They'd never heard that response before.

Alex I have given that one some thought already and my answer is cat 😸 They may only live for 20 ish years but: (they need to be in a good home with a cat flap for this to be true) In those twenty years they do exactly what they want every single day (apart from going to vets). Someone feeds them, twice a day (ours) and they have no concept of time or death. They only worry about if their food is late because their owner is working late and if another cat is in their garden. How many hours in our lives do we do exactly what we want? I bet it doesn't add up to (20 X 365)X 24? One on the settee and one in the front garden right now.

They both look very content

I have lifted our cats up onto various bikes seats just for photos but they soon jump down again. That may change when I finally get an LC back on the road. It looks like it prefers the three stripe black to the two stripe as well.

They both look very content You should get a cat flap or is that the only form of exercise you get or want? The previous house didn't have a cat flap. We only had one cat then and it jus decided one day that it was going to live with us. It used to go out in a morning and come back in in the evening. It was a tad ferrel but tame enough. It was brought upon a farm originally and I think it could survive without us. My lad said the sound of it eating a mouse whole was pretty gruesome. The new house came with a cat flap and we gained another cat. Apparently its said that people from the town come out here, open their car doors put a cats out and drive off. I've heard it from a couple of people. Our present cats only have one pouch a day, half in the morning and half at around 5 or 6. They do have biscuits all day, not bourbons though. They also beg when we eat anything and it usually works My youngest lad and his girlfriend have just got two kittens. That will be a stressful time when they start going out. We would hate it if anything happened to them.

Currently sat in my room at a Hotel off junction 45 M1. I'm half way through my Solidworks training course. Talk about brain overload . There's only three of us doing it and there were two instructors yesterday but only one today. They must have thought they best send two as they suspected I could have a stroke or something when my brain was rudely awakened from its hibernation! Can't afford to get pi$$ed in here as the Stella is £4.99 a pint

What the f! Is it? No I don't take a huge interest in the price of beer generally but I know that one of my favourites, Doombar, is around £3.50 ish in my local out in the sticks. Obviously I'm from the north and we don't expect to pay silly southern prices but I'm practically in Leeds at the moment not darn sarf in a silly wine bar.
