Thought I'd start a thread on how to do this due to the shortage of MPH speedos Changing the face will make the speed read in MPH but the distance will still be in KM's Started with this nice KM Speedo

First the face needs to come off I have a cheap flat bladed driver that I have bent the tip a bit to lever the crimped edge of the bezel Work your way around till the edge is opened up

Then lever the bezel off with a couple of drivers

Once the bezel is off I go around the edge with a small pair of pliers to straighten it a little

Next the trip knob needs to come off If you stick your finger in to the trip dials it stops them moving so you can then remove the knob by turning clockwise

Then you need to mark the mechanism Turn the needle till an indicated 100 kph then mark the mechanism and the frame so you know where it was once the needle comes off I use 3 marks, to be sure, be sure 🤣

Then to take the needle off you need a small bag and 2 spoons

Use the bag to catch the needle and use the spoons to lever the needle off

Once you've taken the face off it is these 2 gears you need to change

To get the gears out you need to bend down the bottom plate that holds the vertical gear in at the bottom I clamp it in a vice. Be gentle, I've had a 31k one break the Speedo head off as they are only crimped in. On later speedos there is a reinforcing plate on the bottom and you can use the 2 screws that hold it in the case with a couple of spacers to take up the screw length and hold it all together

The gears can then be removed The vertical one holds in the horizontal one so needs to come out first It is a very tight space for the gear to pass out of. If you haven't bent the bottom down enough it won't come out You need to rotate it as you try to remove it to clear gears and the Speedo frame Be careful of the rotating dome on the mechanism as it is delicate I had to tweak the side of the framework to get this one out, not usually this tight

Next you need a donor Speedo I have used a few but this time it is from a Suzuki GS 450 which uses similar looking Nippon Seiki clocks On these the needles are the same too so a life saver if you snap a needle Also they have rubber needle stop. Handy as the metal one broke on the kph face when I was trying to remove it Complete clocks were £42 posted Not bad for the gears, 2 needles and needle stops. Also if you are not bothered about standard LC build I think the mph face even fits the LC speedo Unfortunately the complete speedo doesn't fit the LC case. It is slightly taller so doesn't fit. Remove the gears same as the km ones Maybe best to remove the mile ones first as a practice as doesn't matter if you break that speedo

Here are the 2 sets of gears together Miles on left. You can see the finer thread so more revolutions to turn the digit one digit

Fit the mile gears in the LC speedo the reverse of removal and carefully bend the lower plate back up

Once you have fitted the new face (this one is from Simon Wells) turn the mechanism till your marker lines meet up then press the needle back on pointing at 60 mph

Next is clean the glass I try and just use water and a lint free cloth Some glass cleaners can look perfect but they leave a film which goes cloudy Make sure there is no dust on the glass or on the Speedo face then carefully refit the bezel I use a small pair of pliers with one face taped up which goes to the glass side of the bezel to protect it Work your way round gently crimping it back over

That is awesome buddy, bloody good job and actually who knew it would work out so well price wise. Do that and maybe a brand new set of cases from norbs you’ve got a new set of clocks. Fabulous.

That is awesome buddy, bloody good job and actually who knew it would work out so well price wise. Do that and maybe a brand new set of cases from norbs you’ve got a new set of clocks. Fabulous. It's a good cost saver especially if you already have clocks These aren't even mine. A mate needed a set for his build so I got a KM set that the cases are really nice for £300 Then £102 for the clocks and new faces Can be done cheaper if needed A Speedo decal is about a tenner and you can make it backlight by cleaning the old face with meths leaving a clear plastic disc A waft of yellow spray paint and then the decal and it backlights fine There is also another donor speedo that I won't quote till I've double checked. I'm sure I've used one before (got another to check in the garage) They are plentiful and about £20 So you could do it for £30 of parts if on a budget 😉 Steve
