So sorry to hear your news Rigga and hope that Casper comes home to you fit and well. I know how you feel as I had to have one of my Springers put to sleep a week last Monday. So sorry for your loss, can only imagine the pain you feel. This might sound odd, but I've had family members pass away, and its honestly not affected me in the way Casper being ill has, its mental, but its true. I'm hoping we won't face the stark reality of him going, and its hugely frustrating to me personally, that having been involved in engineering all my life, when something goes wrong, there's always a cause, identify and rectify, why can't I find out what's wrong with my dog ffs.!!!!

I know exactly how you both feel. I had a beautiful Rottweiler that lived to a good age (9 1/2) buy that time the rear legs were starting to fuse together, common problem with rottweilers, I had to have her put to sleep, that was 20 years ago, she was so protective of me, I have never had love like that from a human, she was always happy to see me, never gave me any trouble at all, I will never forget her. The only other loss that has affected me in a similar way, was the loss of my lifelong friend last year in a bike accident, I think again the fact that he was always happy to see me and never argued about anything, you only have good memories, apart from the tragic end. Stay positive.

Fingers crossed for Casper mate. Sometimes they get worse before they get better. I've had dogs all my life, but never had to make that "final" journey with one until last December, when Millie, my Springer, had reached that point we all dread. I knew it was her time, but I still got really upset. And 31 years in the Fire Service, front line, I got to deal with some real sad, tragic jobs - kids and adults of all ages. Never had a problem with any of it - I would do my job, show compassion, give my absolute all, and afterwards I was fine, no problem at all. And the only time I cried was a job with a horse ! Cried like a baby when it was all over ! Animals/pets affect a part of our soul that nothing else does I think. I hope it's a long time before you have to cross that bridge ! Best wishes Dusty

That’s sad news, I’m sure he will pull through, the thing is they can’t tell you what’s wrong so you can’t stop worrying. We got a dog a few years back I always resisted but now don’t think I would be with out one, she’s the only one that’s pleased to see me when I come through the front door lol!

He is genuinely happy to see me, does make me smile. I have to attend fatalities on the railway, get the unit going again, and there is some real mess to find, bits of remains everywhere, part of the job and does not faze me, my mate being ill screws me up.
Last 24 hrs apparently he's picked up, started eating bits of chicken, and some biscuits, so he's up and down, he's making me pay.

Funny isn't it, I've dealt with suicides, murders and fatal accidents, decomposed bodies and sudden deaths, i can't stand to see the sight of blood on either my wife and son or any of my animals, i always nearly faint even if my son cuts his finger im eurgh, when my mastiff was ill the wife had to look after her as i got too upset, But give me a headless corpse or decomposing body if i don't know you not a problem.

Phone call today from the vets is more promising, he's had a good 24hrs, taking some food, also will drink the fluid that's been used in the tube to give him some nourishment, is perkier and a bit more lively, will tolerate abdominal inspections much more, so pain is receding, his meds are being reduced, and hopefully if he continues in this way, he may, and I accept its only a may, be home Tuesday, so fingers most deff crossed here.

Cheers for the thoughts guys, I'm at work most days or nights, so my minds occupied, only when I get home does it sink in he's not there, wife is at home, firstly working, but also identified as at risk, so can't even go out to break the quietness of the house currently.

Good news ..... Wife rang me this morning crying, thought shit summat has gone wrong, but no, she'd had a call off the vets to say we could collect Casper this afternoon. Took a few hours off and we drove over to the vets. Bit of a wait whilst bill was settled (insurance) and he came out. Saw us and pulled like crazy to get to us, came home and he spent a while mooching about the house and garden, sniffing like mad, then kinda flaked out. He's shaved quite a bit, belly and legs, and his beard has been cut off, but will all grow back in time, next few days hopefully will see him settle back into his home, start eating bit by bit, got to change his dressing where his tube was inserted, and a tablet a day for a bit, but that's that ..... still no idea what was the cause, just glad hes on the mend and back with us. Thanks for all the comments, thoughts and wishes

good to hear he is on the up , as you said in your first post the feeling of uselessness of not knowing what the trouble is and not being able to do anything yourself except contacting the vet , like most of us dog owners we have been there and its a hard on the head and heart all the best to you all mart

Did they mention what the issue was and how it manifested itself?
