Thanks. Paintwork will hopefully be ready a week on Friday. Bleed the brakes front and back. Fit the painted side strips to the seat Bleed oil pump once the oil tank is fitted Tweak the jetting as I think the pilots are still a little small. And that's about it Dusty

Paint is standard white/red speedblock. It's a nod towards my original Rd400 from back in 86. I did nearly go with a Tz style white/red like the Cafe bike, but the original scheme got the vote in the end, as I want the bike to look very much like an Rd400 at first glance. I did consider a Ford Yellow with metallic black in a Kenny Roberts style, but didn't think the bike was trick enough for that, so will save that idea for another time Only slight difference is the white will be a bright white. I spoke to Mark and he showed me the standard Yam white's, and they do look a bit creamy compared to bright white, so I went bright to match the wheels. Decals will be standard though. Dusty

The white/red speedblock is one of my favorite colour scheme for the air cooled rd's 😎😀

Yea, mine too. The advert back in the day called it "White Heat" ! I do think the white/red combo is very "Yamaha" and I'm sure the scheme was popular due to the Tz's of the time. I really like yellow/black too, but I had already got the wheels done white when it came to deciding paintwork colours, so the wheels wouldn't have looked right against a yellow paint set. I definitely want to do a yellow/black paint scheme one day. I've never had all the bodywork fitted on the bike, so I'm pretty keen to see what it looks like when it's all on. Dusty

I saw this today. The pictures really don't do it justice. Attention to detail is incredible. If I could build a bike half as good as this I'd be well chuffed! Nice to catch up again Dusty!

Cheers Alex, great to catch up, as always Thanks for the comments. Anyone can build a nice bike - just takes patience, and a lot of OCD !! It's not far off now, and sorta sad it's coming to an end in a way. And trawling Facebook for pics for the Facebook thread, I found this from "back in the day"; 188341019_3911680618869839_1345473894623937950_n by dusty miller, on Flickr Very much "of it's time" !! Had one of the final parts of this jigsaw arrive in the post today. A seat lock - quite a rare item it would seem judging by how few appear on ebay, and that's including the other models of Yamaha these were fitted to. I was contacted out of the blue by a forum member who had picked it up with some other parts, and knowing I needed one boxed it up and sent it to me, for free ! How lovely is that ! Thanks mate, you've made my day!! It's in great condition, but I've had it apart to clean it, and decided to go with a bare alloy finish as it's a cast body and polished up nicely. Managed to get the paint off quite easily with my evil paint stripper, and a quick buff on the polishing wheel and it's on ! 20210521_152815 by dusty miller, on Flickr Fingers crossed for the paint set next week, and it's virtually there! Yea, lots of great people on here. I had resigned myself to not fitting a seat lock due to scarcity and cost, so I am so thankful to Pete Dusty

Yea, YSS "G Series" piggybacks, actually designed for Xj1300's. The top and bottom eye dimensions are correct for the 400, plus the length was good, although the extensions I had made have got them to an ideal length for my set up now

Fitted the front muddie this afternoon. That meant I could finalise the brake line brackets; 20210529_183825 by dusty miller, on Flickr I also bough a new Yamaha speedo cable guide. I wasn't going to bother, but changed my mind whilst the paint was away Bit of careful drilling and it's fitted; 20210529_185534 by dusty miller, on Flickr Brake lines all tightened up now, so brakes can be bled. Mark matched the red from the decals for the paint on the mudguard. White is the brightest white he can get, so that would match the wheels; 20210529_190050 by dusty miller, on Flickr Oil tank next. Perhaps a dome Allen bolt on the muddie?

Hi mate That's a "shouldered" bolt to fit the front muddies mounting hole, so needs to be that type Dusty

Hi John Cheers mate. I'm always really pleased with Mark's work, and he managed to get it all done so I could pick it up on the way home from Northumberland, saving me a separate 250 mile round trip. There was no filler anywhere in the tank so that was nice to know, and there was only one minor crack on the tail piece which he bonded before paint. I want to get the oil tank on next so I can then bleed the pump and get the autolube up and running. And I do like the white/red combo. A few of my Yams have been in those colours, although I have a ideas for something different if I do another build, but I felt it was the right scheme for this bike Dusty

Cheers fellas Fitted the oil tank today and filled with oil so I can bleed the lines at some point. Also fitted the tank. I bolted on the new taps I bought from Norbo; 20210530_203124 by dusty miller, on Flickr I used these as they have a single outlet, albeit an 8mm bore as they are high flow, but the 6mm petrol pipe can be pushed on with a bit of force. I bought some new fibre sealing washers from Yamaha for the bolts that fix the taps to the tank; 20210530_202729 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20210530_204542 by dusty miller, on Flickr I bought new tank mounting rubbers and washer plates from Shambits ages ago. The metal is a bit thin, but it's good enough; 20210530_202911 by dusty miller, on Flickr Just got the pet cap to fit now then I can add fuel. It's looking more like an Rd400 every day !! 20210530_212357 by dusty miller, on Flickr I need to work out where the bolt holes are for the seat side strip fixings. They are hidden by the new cover, so I have to carefully prod the seat edge with a small screwdriver to try and locate the holes Not found them yet !! Dusty

Ordered the side strip fixing bolts today - 2 sets as I may add more fixings as there are only 3 per side. Also popped in to see Glen, my welding guy, to get the Allspeed end caps altered. Chris - Sidney81, kindly sent me 2 bits of stainless tube that fitted over the existing end pipe perfectly, and I got Glen to weld them on; 20210601_195025 by dusty miller, on Flickr Purely a "looks" thing for me, and another little detail ticked off. Just need to polish them up and I will refit them. Dusty
