Some time back, Alex - Donkeychomp, gave me a German 250d frame in great condition, primarily to chop bits off for my Café racer build. I did use the bottom brace that the side stand mounts too, but otherwise it stayed intact. The frame has all it's lugs, and appears straight, so it would be a shame not to make use of it. I managed to get a Nova on it, and with a dating certificate from Paul Dawkins, and some pointers from Steve - Midlife (thanks fellas) - I sent off an application last Thursday to the DVLA for a Uk reg. Confirmation landed on my mat today - to say I'm pleased is an understatement ! So I now have a Uk V5c on it's way in the next few weeks, and the frame is now a Historic "S" reg. This will be my next project bike. I have some parts already - left over from other builds, but still plenty to do and get. Finishing the Café Racer will be the priority, but I can collect parts for this and get certain jobs done. The 400E engine that I'm rebuilding will go in this build - the engine number is entered on the V5c, so that's all correct. I have an Rgv VJ22 front end that I will use, and I have a NOS Rgv vJ22 rear wheel to match. Plan will be to get Metmachex to make a 400 twin shock swingarm to take the Rgv wheel. I like the YSS piggyback shocks, or something like them. I picked up a mint, as new tank recently; 20200115_105139 by dusty miller, on Flickr I'm thinking of standardish seat, side panels and tail at the moment. Only the running gear really being any different at first glance. I will chop off some parts but nothing radical. Standard clocks maybe, normal headlight - nothing too involved. Aircooled parts prices are as mad as Lc/Pv, so it may be a slow build ! Dusty

It all hinged on getting the Uk registration approved. Starting with the Nova, which I applied for online, and took 10 days for an email notification ( we had Xmas in the middle of that !). Then Paul Dawkins did me a dating letter - the frame number puts the bike's birthday around September 1977, meaning I could also apply for Historic status (no tax or MOT). Steve did the process with his Gt750, so gave me some pointers. I downloaded the V55/5 form off the net, sent it off to Swansea, and it took a week, door to door. I have a registration number for the bike, just waiting on the new V5c to arrive. I'm planning on getting my Café bike to Mutts in the spring, so can play around a bit with this frame in the meantime. I more or less know what I need to do to it, so I will remove some bits, and get my engineering guys to do the other bits, hopefully in one go. Dusty

This is the frame; 20191213_121009 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20191213_121241 by dusty miller, on Flickr The red circles show the parts of the frame that will be removed as they will not be needed. The yellow rectangle shows the area where a plate needs to be welded in for a side stand. The plan, which may change, is for standard tank and panels, rearset style footrests, and a standard seat which may be reshaped although I might look at a different seat design. The V5c arrived yesterday, so it's good to go ! Dusty

Cheers fellas I'm really not that quick ! I start off "great guns" but inevitably slow down as the build goes on. There will be a load of parts to get for this bike - seat, electrics, bearings, tyres, lights, side panel, clocks - the list is a big one. A rough donor bike would be the best bet but aircooled prices certainly match, if not exceed Lc prices The swingarm and shocks will be a big spend, frame mods, paint - funds will slow it down. Priority is the Café build. That needs a loom making plus pipes, and a couple of minor jobs doing, but I must finish that this year. My old 400 doesn't need much - just fettling, so that's good, so this build will be my next main project. Dusty

Been starting to collect some parts for this "future" project ! I know how I want the rolling chassis to be, so will try and limit myself to concentrating on that as I move forward. The frame will head up to Metmachex in the next few weeks so they can make a twin shock swingarm to take a Vj22 wheel. I bought some XJR400 (same as 1300) piggyback shocks, so they could be used for the dimensions/mock up. I will strip and rebuild them when they come back as they seem pretty good; 20200310_162614 by dusty miller, on Flickr They are aftermarket units I think and seem leak free, length adjustable and preload obviously. They would look pretty good with a vapour blast, some polishing and paint and recoated springs. I wanted YSS twin shocks ideally, but pretty spendy at £500+. Donkeychomp has come up with 2 tachos and a speedo (cheers mate ) which I can refurb, plus a side panel and a kickstart. My yokes for the Rgv forks arrived from Andy - Spondon 440 on here, and I'm really happy with these; 20200309_190000 by dusty miller, on Flickr The dented, swarf filled oil tank has been returned to the ebay seller, so hopefully get reimbursed this week. Once the frame is back, I will do the mods on it and then hopefully build up the rolling chassis. Dusty

Parts collection is on going ! This week, I got a decent oil tank, and a battery box; 20200314_131958 by dusty miller, on Flickr The kickstart came from Alex, and the lever was seized solid on the knuckle, but some Wd40 and some gentle persuasion saw it freed off and usable again. I've got the clocks to refurb, and I bought a centre console and bracket from Greece today, via ebay, so will have that to fettle too. When I think of the boxes of aircooled parts I threw away in the late 90's coz nobody wanted them ! I've got a fairly long list of parts to get, but I'm ticking a few off each week Dusty

Good progress on the parts mate
Don't talk to me about throwing out parts
When I bought my lc2 in 89 it had f1 side panels and tail on it. The tank was the correct early lc2 colours but it had a dink in it so I bought an f1 tank with good paint and fitted that
The lc2 one eventually went in the wheel bin 😖

This weeks parts include a centre console and bracket from Greece; 20200321_152325 by dusty miller, on Flickr A centre spar and side stand bracket to replace the one removed from this frame for the Café racer frame; 20200321_152314 by dusty miller, on Flickr I also bought a new, pattern ignition switch and some taper bearings for the yokes. The centre spar arrived this morning so I set to cutting out the frame tubes that were still welded to it - it's obviously come out of a scrap frame. I also started to modify the frame, removing brackets and parts I know I will not use - not to save weight but to clean up the frame of unnecessary metalwork. So far the bits removed include the steering lock boss, rear master cylinder and reservoir brackets, mid exhaust bracket and footrest bracket on one side and I've cleaned up some untidy welds. Need to get another cutting disc to do a bit more tomorrow. My engineering guys have had some work cancelled so I may take the frame in for some other work, whilst they are quiet. I'm also hoping to mod the tank for twin taps and weld up the silly balance tubes on the underside of the tank; 20200321_175213 by dusty miller, on Flickr Dusty

The frame is at the engineers now, having some work done for chain clearance, and a few brackets added on. Alex kindly supplied a speedo and tacho which I stripped down, cleaned and rebuilt, painting the rims in the process; 20200328_194717 by dusty miller, on Flickr The instrument bracket that came from Greece had been bent at some point, and would have been difficult to get right again due to it's shape. I found a Nos Xs250 bracket on ebay that is the same as the Rd, but half the price of the Rd versions advertised; 20200328_194645 by dusty miller, on Flickr I also needed a swingarm spindle, as the one I had was too short. Again, ebay had one; 20200328_115655 by dusty miller, on Flickr Another part ticked off the list ! A huge part of the jigsaw was sorted this week too. Paul, at PJME in Wolverhampton posted my rebuilt crank and rebored barrels back; 20200328_194746 by dusty miller, on Flickr 20200328_194825 by dusty miller, on Flickr Awesome workmanship, as always I can now get back to the engine rebuild. I found some original, Yamaha nos head gaskets in Germany, so they are on their way, so I have virtually everything to complete the engine now. I am doing a separate thread on the crank rebuild, courtesy of some pics Paul kindly took for me as he was doing the work. The barrels will go to Jamie for vapour blasting and painting, to match the heads. Dusty
