Its it all over for new GRY sales? On 30th June Toyota Aus killed off ordering for the GRY from July 1st - the next day, stopping the flurry of calls they would have got lol. They planned to move to a waiting list, but that would be almost 2 weeks away, obviously they did this on short notice and the IT guys had to create one. The reason given was that the order book stretched over a year. www.carsales.com.au/editorial/details/toyota-gr-yaris-stop-sale-announced-130745/In the past few days Toyota UK have done the same, citing the 18 month (2023) for delivery to be un acceptable for taking money etc. www.topgear.com/car-news/hot-hatch/bad-luck-toyota-gr-yaris-sold-out-until-2023My view is that it is over. The GRY is a hero car for Toyota... these are my thoughts: We all know its expensive to build which means lower profit for Toyota. Thats offset by the buzz that comes from the reviews that prove that the 'no more boring cars' statement is true. But like all good music releases you need a follow up album, thats where you dig in and gain traction. That's the GR Corolla... unless it was the GRY and the Supra was classed as first? My feeling is that its pretty much over for the GRY as It has done its job... done it very well indeed. The nub of it I believe is this: Sometimes its better to quit while you're ahead. Especially when you want to take the programme further like they want with more GR models. Its been a great start. The Supra was less of wake up than the GRY, but wow did the GRY deliver. The long term goodwill from the hero GRY project will help sell even the lukewarm 'Semi-GR' models (think Hyundai N-line) going forwards. Few cars have been as well received as the GRY, but its time for the next phase.

As far as marketing plans go itโs been a brilliant episode for them. What I like about it, is it isnโt a super/hyper car that the majority of people canโt afford that create buzzes but have little to no effect or impact on the man in the street. This is a relatively affordable car that has had a huge impact and I suspect they have been blown away by the interest and orders that followed and as you say jon demand has far out stripped supply. I also wonder are there any up coming emissions restrictions? Would the car comply? Also with the world turning towards ev-hybrids etc and more and more companies turning their backs on fossil fuel powered cars has this impacted on the decision? All questions I have no answer to, it was probably seen as a brave move by Toyota themselves and the decision has been totally validated. Are we likely to see any competitors also doing similar? For the above reasons probably not although it would be great to see a few Wrc inspired cars as a last hurrah.

Defo Toyota was caught napping with this one, the demand has been immense. If you were Aikido Toyoda (head of Toyota) you would have to have a beer at the end of the project and say to yourself that you were right, the 'boring cars' were holding back the company.
Im not sure that the emissions are an immediate problem, bear in mind that this was a brand new engine for this car, but it is true that the 2022-on Toyota WRC will be electric in some part if not all. So seems the 3 cylinder was clever and amazingly powerful for its size, but maybe a dead duck? we'll see going forwards i guess with that. I did read somewhere that the three cylinder configuration was part done for the emissions (and weight/size). FWIW emission over Toyota sales in EU etc is no problem at the mo as they have Prius and hybrids to offset all that petrol burning.
Yep, defo would be nice to see some of the others manufacturers doing similar cars, but I fear it wont happen unless they are electric. Certainly Subaru and Mitsubishi are smaller (and poorer) companies so its perhaps out of scope for them, more so when you consider they have very few (any?) hybrids to offset extra petrol burning to fit in with the regs.
I'm not anti electric to be honest, but there is something so visceral about mechanical sounds rather than a hoover noise. I was waiting in a hospital carpark the other week as only one person was allowed to visit. As I sat in the WRX with the window down i could hear an ethereal ghostly sound, 'Whooooooooooohhhhhh', it went over and over with a pause in between, getting louder and louder. I was a bit weirded out for a while as it was getting closer... then out of the multi storey carpark came a Nissan Leaf! He'd been regenerative braking down the ramps between the floors. Spooooky!

I take my hat off to Toyota. Building a small batch of petrol only cars that are purpose built for one thing. Very fast B road driving. A bit like what Yamaha did with the LC. A last gasp 2 finger salute to everyone as they knew 2 strokes were doomed. Perhaps many years from now the GR will be regarded in the same light.
Unlike Jon, I fully loathe electric cars. They aren't solving the planets problem but making it worse. A Prius does more damage to the environment than a Land Rover. And where is all this electricity coming from to power them all? I'd buy a Hydrogen car but never an electric one. But my little rant won't matter as they are clearly going to make it impossible to buy a new petrol powered car soon enough.
Like the sign says Jon, POWER PETROL lol.

I don't mind a decent electric at but some of these self charging hybrids are a joke
Dropped my dirty Ford diesel off to get some repairs done and asked the lease company for a hire car
They had left a brand new Toyota CHR
Now these guys have been making hybrids for a very long time so I was quite keen to see how good it was
At pedestrian speeds it whirrs away nicely. Any acceleration at all and the petrol motor kicks in which isn't offensive but I thought it would do more on battery.
Try and accelerate at any decent pace and the engine connected to the CVT transmission screams it's tits off which is really annoying
I then drove 30 miles on the motorway, exited and came to a roundabout. Still keen to see what it would do I selected battery mode.
On to the roundabout I trundelled, a pensioner on a mobility scooter would have gave me a run for my money
As I got to my exit I gave it the slightest touch of the accelerator. There was a beep and a message on the display
"Battery mode disabled, too much throttle"
As nan would say, what a load of old shit
Also Jon you mention regeneration. They say it has been improved but you come off the throttle and touch the brakes, you feel them biting
Then some tw4t throws an anchor it the boot. Well that's what it feels like
Half these so called hybriฤs are a waste of time. The Ford Mondeo hybrid does the same mpg and nears as hell the same emissions of the diesel
Now back to petrol guzzlers please ๐

Yes, Im no fan of hybrids at all. Anyway as you said Steve, electric is subject for another thread (or not at all lol) So yes back to things with AWD and turbos! One thing I will add is that some CVTs are better than others. Ive got used to the one in my WRX the past 5.5years and I understand and respect what it does. Most people who drive one dont really get them, but they can be quite clever. Anyway, Im not going to extol (or otherwise) the virtues of it here either, real JDM turbo performance cars featured here are rarely autos

Don't know about average age, but I'm 62 and have gone for the pipe and slippers convenience pack.... ๐คฃ Haha, the CoP as we seem to now be calling it on the GRY forum. Quite a rare beast with all those CiP orders. I have to say I wanted the HUD and the Nav on my car, plus the better stereo. I was lucky in that our Rallye is a mixture of the CoP and the CiP so I was able to get those with the lighter forged wheels and the LSDs which i also wanted. I'd have been really torn if i was UK based and had and either/or choice like you guys did. Im very excited for you Murp!

Cheers jonw..... Lots of people over here seem to have had a dilemma cct v convenience, but I always knew the convenience pack extras were going to be far more useful for me, but that argument has been done to death over on the gry forum ๐

Haha, thats so true Veg, but we grew up on LCs, we were never going to want to conform to any slow road rules. Murp, agreed the 'argument' has been done to death there and it also got a bit heated a while back when the Aussies started calling our 'normal' or 'base' GR (which is mostly a CoP) the 'Pov spec' when the Rallye came out. Aussies have a thick skin and were really just joking, tho the Aussie Fb forum also went ballistic with a them n us thing. Its the same car really as we all know, funny world.

Well Im crediting Murp as being good luck. Toyota just called me, my car is being built in August and will be here in September for a late sept delivery, same as you mate!
Im delighted! Not only is my delivery brought forwards, but there was some debate about getting a car at all when i ordered... and of course end sept is spring here. And perhaps our (now extended to end August) lock down will be over... the stars may all align and this be 'perfect!'. We'll see.
