Lol, that forged carbon for you. Its a great product as its stronger as it has a greater fibre content over the regular stuff, but as its not a laid out mat its not what we are used to seeing. I actually do quite like it. Something new. It does look better in real life than the fake marble kitchen worktop of course, it just amuses me to say it. My car should be here in 3 weeks... no word from the dealer... if its late, what are the chances its blamed on covid lol

After 20 years driving a Subaru Impreza which started with the last of the turbo range as a company car to the current 2008 WRX STi Type UK, which I've done 200K miles over 13 years. And people keep saying the 2.5 litre engine is unreliable, hmmm. It's time to say farewell and thanks for the memories. I'm going to be sad to see her go, but all things must come to an end I suppose.

This should be an interesting series, restoration of a P1 - the best UK delivered classic Scooby imho. more to come... EDITED: next! Excellent Jon, i had one of these in 2010 the best Scoob i've ever had, bought for £8k and sold for the same a year later to a guy in Holland. Wish it was still on my drive! Andy.

And begs the question with a car of its value, why not just keep it?

I wished I'd got a 2 door when i could have done, would have loved one. you were one of the lucky ones to have had one at all i reckon Andy. I remember when they came out and a guy I knew got one and I'd just got my MY00 blue GC8. His P1 was a stunner and I wished I'd had the extra money to grab one, closest i got was a set of used P1 wheels lol. Vids are pretty good really, guy is funny and they have stripped it now, keen to see what they need to do to it as it doesnt look awfully rusty. He has some other great cars in his garage including a 22B and a TME so it'd be nice if he did some back to back comparisons.

Subaru stopped selling the STi in the UK a few years ago, all they have now is the BRZ and a bunch of dull SUV's that all use a CVT drive train. None of which interest me because as far as I'm concerned the CVT drive train is the devils work. I've replaced it with an Audi TT Quattro, which is less practical than the Impreza, but as my job changed due to C19 cutbacks I didn't need to conform to the company car policy of a 4 door saloon any more. So I thought I would go for something a bit different whist keeping all wheel drive. As to why I didn't just keep the STi, it had reached that point where there seemed to be always something that needed work. Coupled with the annual road tax of £585 and raising it wasn't worth keeping it as a run around. I also made the decision a while back to get a YPVS for fun on the road and get a more comfortable car for daily use.

Its the perfect city car for a busy city (I live in Sydney) and also good one weekends out in the countryside. Ive said it before but the Subaru CVT is actually very good, sadly many people knock it without ever trying it. That said, Im back to an all manual fleet with the Evo and the GRY, luckily my days of city driving have waned since Covid. I call this photo '25+ years of competition' (will be weird not to own both a scooby and an Evo when the GRY lands and the Scooby is sold, end of an era on my driveway and no more 'which do you like best?' questions solved by saying 'I have both!' lol) TT will be fun, and great its an AWD one. Hear you on old Scoobys always needing something. Luckily my Evo has been much more reliable than the same age WRX and STIs a few mates have, but I dont do massive miles on it.

That's a nice pair you have there. I prefer the aggressive styling of the older EVOs and STis, but I'm sure the newer one is a better drive in town. I've not tried the Subaru CVT, my only experience with it was a loaner I was given while I was waiting for delivery of my first Impreza. I used it to drive down to the Alpes on a skiing trip which went well until I set off to drive home. It was parked on a snowy carpark, I put it in reverse and pressed the peddle, the engine revved up but no power was delivered to the wheels. I ended up having to rope in a bunch of French guys to push me out of the carpark. After that experience, I have just said nope to CVT. It's definitely the end of an era all round, with new cars required to have built in speed limiters and GPS tracking there's no fun any more.

Should be any easyish fix Jon my 16yr old lad was with me and peed himself he calls it my kit car. I’ve had a few legacy estates as my daily driver the last one was a 2.5 cvt the box actually wasn’t bad if you knew how to use it and as an every day car for work was ok apart from the head gaskets going at 55k.

And yes the newer cars are much quieter and full of toys, they are nice 'quick' cars, not silly fast like they were out of the box back in the day. The problem is their weight, Im looking forward to losing the weight with the GRY Ahh ok, well not all Subaru CVT are the same. Losing drive isnt a fault Ive heard happens, would be very annoying I get that but any car can have a problem I guess. The WRX CVT I have has gearbox modes, the ends of the scale are an 8 speed with flappy paddles that work far better than my old GTI's ever did, instant shifts and you can hold onto the gears as long as you want - ok with a cvt thats not real gears, but feels just like real ones. Other end of the scale is pure auto mode where the car puts the engine speed at the most torque and then brings up the road speed to match, all dependant on how fast you want to go. Ive had other CVTs as borrowed and rental cars and they were horrible like driving a huge elastic band, this is not like that. Its seemless and the car is always boosting and on the power, but its not 'normal' as the car doesnt rev - the bit the changes is the gearbox to alter the road speed. If you miss the rev up and down gears, just switch to the paddles. Its been great for 5.5 years and superb as a posh and quiet everyday car, the Evo is my weekend car tho as its faster and handles better as its lighter. I think Toyota extended the era with the GRY, with its back to basics approach. Subaru just released the new WRX/STI and its terrible looking as youve no doubt seen. Im glad I ordered the GRY, its more 'me' than the new Scooby sadly. Never thought i say that about a Yaris! haha.

I'll just put this here for completeness (as I dount you'll ever see one in the UK); this is the new WRX. The STI follows on next year, I'll put up a pic when we see it. WARNING: As usual it'll hurt your eyes, its a subaru. And on paper it offers nothing more than any other new model. Prepare to hate it until the new model comes out etc. Forums are already doing this; roll on Subaru! www.news.com.au/technology/motoring/motoring-news/divisive-new-look-for-subaru-wrx/news-story/7aeb0ce6e5a20e1c30d204f178b3477aAnd a video... defo feels over produced and like the manufacturer paid for it lol Again, this is for completeness only, not really something for discussion as its not 'late 90s' and not a GRY etc. And it is fugly lol. Let's see if we look back more kindly on it when the next one comes out. I expect we will... it is the Scooby way after all!

It seems Murp and my dealer are in sync with their calls. Not the same info, but they seem to ring on the same days. So, yesterday arvo I had a call from my dealer. I expected when I saw the call that it was one of two things: 1 - Your car is on time, we need to talk about payment and pickup as we are all in lockdown etc. 2 - Your car is a little early! It was neither of those things... or was it? This is how it went: After the pleasantries she told me she had bad news and that production delays due to chip shortages meant that my car was not built in August and instead would be built in October. I simply said to her, 'There were no delays in the production of GRY in August. I have the factory schedule for August and September and its Sept that had delays, and even then it was only 3 seperate days. I find it hard to believe my car is delayed since you told me it was being built in August. Even if it was bounced, it would be Sept, not Oct. But either way, there were no delays to GRY in August, so I say its already been built.' She waffled on about being sorry and how it was out of her and Toyota's control. I let her run. When she slowed down I suggested that was a great story but that as a modern car buyer I probably knew more about the chip shortages and the GRY than she did. My tone was light, but firm. I suggested she check this and get back to me as there is tracking software I can use but hers is better. I said, to me its quite simple. If it was in production in August, which is what I'd been told before, then since there were no delays back then that its already built and on the water, or in the belly of the ship awaiting leaving port, or on the dockside; but most likely to meet the original delivery date of the end of this month, beginning of next, that it would be enjoying its voyage as we talked. She sighed and gave me the 'If i must' noises down the line. I hear clicking on her computer and then puzzled noises and she says, 'you car is listed as state VO{mumble}'. OK... 'That means its... er, 'on the water'. I let that hang for a bit. Then asked, 'So, delivery is still late this month, early next, right?'. She said, 'let me check further down the page on this system... here it is, 'Delivery slated for first/2nd week of October.' She did sound quite perplexed and said she was working through a list from some department who advised her of which customer cars were delayed. She then spun some spiel about how she'd rang and given me bad news at the start of the convo but she'd managed to turn it round so all was good. I laughed and said that was a bit of a salespersons leap, and that if she'd rang other people then maybe she should recheck the tracking for their cars online as she might need to ring them back, she agreed. Sigh... car sales staff. WTAF?! So, seems mine is about 1 month away, Murp will have done his running in before mine lands. At least one of us will be having fun. Im well chuffed for you Murp!

Fingers crossed you get it soon Jon..... I've not been able to track mine on the my t app because it was a cancelled order.... You guys have got the cream with the Rallye pack, so I'm sure it will be worth the wait... I've got a 180 mile train trek to get it on Monday, because the dealership is in Burton on Trent.... Trying to put it out of my mind until Monday.... It's a big thing for me.... Never had a new car before.... Plus am anxious about it being a theif magnet, cos it won't be garaged and will sit on the drive in view of all the passing scumbags... trying not to think about all that negative stuff though.....am getting excited now ..... It's suddenly become real.👍

Thanks mate. You'll be fine I reckon, its not like anyone has yet reported the theft of a GRY on either the UK or Aus forums yet.
Some guys I see are fitting Ghost and all sorts, but I think for 99% of even 'car people' its not an attractive thing to nick other than for a joyride and the further we distance from the TopGear debut, the less that will factor. In the scale of things and against other new cars I think a few other factors will help; ie. its not *that* fast or 'exotic', no one needs hard to find parts yet as the car is still current, also its useless for ramraiding being a 3 door and has no boot room, plus really thin bumpers etc. As I said, I really do think you'll be fine, Id be more worried if i was parking something more expensive and exotic in view, or at least with hard to find parts fitted etc.
Heehee, thats so cool, first new car is such a great thing; enjoy it!
And... come the long way home from BoT and you'll have done a large portion of the running in already, lovely!
My dealer is 1km from my house, I'll probably walk up for collection lol.
