GL4 75/ 85w Is ALL you need to know. Find some... buy it... fill your trans with it.. then enjoy the bike.

I'd love to know what the bods at Yamaha HQ would say now,...Haynes manual states 10w/30 motor oil, Stan Stevens uses 10w/40,....are you going to disagree with probably the most experienced 2 stroke guru there is??

Sometimes i have to work with oil technicians. Six or seven years ago i was pestering the guys for their opinion. This was in the context of old land rover gearboxes. They all told me more or les the same thing. The shear qualities of engine oil is less than that of transmission oil, both will work but engine oil should be changed more regularly. I have used engine oil, automatic transmission oil, and GL4 transmission oil. They all seem to do their job but i prefer the GL4 transmission as i think changing gear feels better, although when its not used for a couple of days the clutch plates tend to stick. I think more damage will be caused by not regularly changing the oil if you use the bike a lot. There are no oil filters to remove all the small clutch particles etc Best thing to do is find a modern built two stroke bike and see what oil is recommended. Oil technology has moved on in leaps and bounds since these bikes were designed. So my answer to your question is yes i disagree with the Guru

Erm... Actually fitted Yamalube 10/40 to your Transbox?? If so... it's seriously unlikely you would be making silly noises :-)

Best thing to do is find a modern built two stroke bike and see what oil is recommended. Oil technology has moved on in leaps and bounds since these bikes were designed. I asked this question at a local KTM dealership today, the guy said that they use a gearbox oil in their latest 2 stroke model,.....I then went next door to ask the guy in the Husqvarna shop the same question, he said 10W/30 or 10W/40 motor oil. Now these latest 2 stroke bikes are essentially the same aren't they? So who's right when it comes to the choice of oil I wonder??

Looks like you 2 have choices, Like i said earlier i have used a three types and agree with Bare. I prefer a Gl4 type oil over engine oil and transmission oil.

It will have contaminated your clutch plates with the friction modifiers found in modern automotive engine oils. Take the advice and use a specific gear oil. I've had no problems with Silkolene gear oil but will be trying GL4 at the next change.

I’ve tried GL4,it’s ok. But I run silkoiene light gear oil in my hybrids, and one has perfect gear change and it finds neutral easier than my 1050 speed triple. But my other hybrid is as difficult as most are,1st to 2nd about 5 times before I find neutral. Both set up the same! Seems to be luck of the draw? GL4 ok when warm but feels a bit thick when cold?

10W40 MOTORCYCLE oil is designed for use in motorcycle engines and, by definition, in their gearboxes and clutches. I use Castrol Power 1 10W40 in my Triumph Tiger Explorer. If it's good enough for that, it's good enough for my Yam. I've had no issues at all with it.

Using GL4 at the moment but get slip sometimes at 8000rpm. Have also used Auto trans fluid which was best with no slip at all and super light on feel. Haven’t used it for a while as I read scare stories with premature gear wear!!
