Hi,
I have just bought a RD125LC MK1 as back in 1986 I had a brand new MK2 which my dad bought me for my 17th birthday, but always wanted a MK1 so 28yrs later I have treated myself.
It is supposed to be the full power model as it is a German import, But today I took it for a blast and I know compared to my superbike it was never going to be fast BUT,
Flat out it was doing 65mph at 9000rpm in top, I have noticed the gearing has been dropped to 15/48,
I know the NOS exhaust isnt restricted as I have had alook and I am going to buy new sprockets 16/45 is this correct, I also want to check the jets could anyone tell me what size they should be on the full power model.
If the jets are the correct size that should be it shouldn't it!!! possible 80mph!
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Ian

nice bike youve got there ian same as mine, not to sure on the gearing but seems like it been gearded for bottom end power i have a short can micron with a 220 jet fitted in the 12a carb and it does 90 maybe 95 sometimes, i know that in the 10w full power carb the standard jet is 155 hope this helps and enjoy looks a gud un.

Thankyou for that, I will check my jet size in the next few days,
I'm very happy with my little RD, I bought it off a BSB Superbike champion as he is scaling down his collection, so after waiting 28yrs for one it was an added bonus that it was owned by him.

An 11Y carb is a European non-UK model carb. Won't be your performance problem, as it will be pretty much the same as a 10W carb, so should be running a 155 main jet as standard.
Was the bike first register new in the UK ?. Will say on the V5 on either the bottom of front page, or date first registered in the UK will be different to the date first registered new (top of page 2) ?.
I'd get the gearing put back to standard and take it from there.

It was first registered in Germany and brought into the country in 2010,
My intention is as you say get the sprockets ordered asap and take it for a ride and see what happens, the engine is crisp and quiet, When I took the exhaust off to check to see if it was restricted I looked in the exhaust port into the cylinder and it looks brand new it must have had a rebuild not too long ago.

Cool, should just be the gearing holding it back then :-) .
Mine has an 11Y carb, 170 main, modified Micron pipe, BMC air filte element and airbox inlet nozzle removed and it flies :-)

Fingers crossed then It was great to have a little ride on one after so many years, I would like to restore the bike one day with period extras but want it performing as it should first. I remember the little RD being alot bigger back in 86 lol

Yeah, let us know how you get on after sorting the gearing :-) .
I had one new in December 83 and still have great fun on mine, even after jumping straight off a 175bhp modern superbike :-)

Very nice, I remember them so well, I had a black 1983 DT125LC brand new and kept getting blown away by the RD125lc's. Hopefully it is just the gearing holding it back. A mate back in the day used to get a ton indicated with a meadspeed fairing, allspeed and different jetting. We reckoned it was good for a genuine 90mph. Cheers Nick.

Just checked my jet size and it says 180, so need to check the needle height next, so it is looking like just the gearing.

I'd check the plug colour when you've got the gearing sorted and take it for a good run but that main jet sounds too big for an 11Y carb to me.
If you're running a standard tune, standard pipe and standard airbox etc., then I would think the 155 standard jet would be right.
I'm only running a 170 main with a load of mods.
Good luck

Will do Looey, the plug is a nice light brown colour, should I remove the rubber intake from the top of the airbox under the seat!!! the standard pipe has no restive, washer in it.
I remember Neil my mate had one in 1985, I,m sure he had a small can micron, filter, jetted up, different reads, different plug and changed the gearing.

my airbox snorkels been removed(never had one when i got it)so borrowed one of a mate it didnt run right at all just would not rev, same as looey says do the gearing first then she how shes goes down the road, then do a plug chop it will give you a idea of how it jetted.

Thanks mate, Just waiting for my 16/45 sprockets to arrive then for another good thrash to see how it performs the a total strip down and restoration, but it will be rebuilt with period mods just how I wanted it in 1985/86.

Right thats the front & rear brakes stripped painted new shoes on the rear, piston & seals on the front, all fluids on the bike changed, the correct gearing on the sprockets, Just need the roads to dry out and then for a good blast to see how it performs

Just had a road test on the little RD, 16/45 gearing revving to 11,000rpm threw the gears and 9,000rpm in top 80mph with 14st on it and 30mph gusts!! I'm happy with that and no more bellows of blue smoke just a little which is good, the exhaust must have been full of 2stroke oil. The motor was crisp, no oil leaks Just need a Micron now to add a little grin factor.

That's a good result and pretty much was we were expecting after putting the gearing right Early small can Microns are pretty thin on the ground, so I'd go for either a small can Allspeed or a later style Micron with detachable end can but remove the entire end can and stinger (pipe that go into the main section of the exhaust) and just put an aftermarket 3 bolt fixing end can on like a Sterling or something.

There was a small can Micron on ebay that has just ended, it had no fitting kit and had some rust, I offered him £110 for it but he wouldn't post it, it sold for less than I offered, Another will turn up one day.
